  • Dog-friendly cherry orchard site in the peaceful Kent Downs
  • Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 25 minutes’ drive to Whitstable
  • Barbecues and campfires allowed; pub within two minutes’ walk
Plant yourself firmly in the cherry orchard at Painters Farm Campsite beside the village of Painters Forstal in Kent, where cherries aren’t the only thing blossoming. Previously owned by the same hands for over 50 years, the new owners have injected a new lease of life into this family-friendly and dog-friendly two-acre site… welcomed by barns adorned with fairy lights and the sweet shade from cherry trees, you’ll be well-situated to take in everything from chalk cliffs to wistful woodlands in the surrounding sloping Kent Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Plus, go from grassy pitches into luscious sands, as the coastal town of Whitstable is within 25 minutes’ drive. Here, you can sample sunsets while eating oysters or head out to sea on a sailboat if you wish. The local area is certainly awash with things to do. Perhaps settle for a pint of local ale or a meal in the nearby Kentish pub, within two minutes’ stroll. You could head into Faversham (just a five minutes’ drive) for ice cream shops, cafés and pubs set in what was once a busy port in 17th-century England (famed for its wool trade). Here, walk its cutesy medieval street (one of the oldest in the country) or stock up on supplies from its supermarket within five minutes’ drive, ready for a light barbecue or campfire back on site. If you’re thirsty from the day’s jaunts, there’s also the country’s oldest family-owned brewery within 10 minutes’ drive and a large food hall with naturally scrumptious farm foods within the same distance.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely small site ideal base for visiting sites in Kent. Well looked after by friendly wardens. Clean facilities, free hot showers and small shop. Fires allowed, great for families, very safe for children.

Disliked Not much space between pitches. We had a large tent as did our neighbours either side.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked A very pretty, well maintained, small campsite on flat ground, with all the facilities you need. After an accidental soaking inside our bedroom area the tumble dryer was very handy.

Karen and Simon were very friendly, helpful managers at the site who always seemed to be around if needed. We were a large group with three tents and they were very accommodating at putting us in an area together. Picnic tables around the site were definitely an added bonus. Toilets, showers and washing up area were clean.

Plenty in the area to do and nice walk to Faversham and around the area from the campsite.

Loved the cars not being next to the tents, it made it so much nicer and they were only a very short walk away in the next field.

Would definitely visit again.

Disliked Very slight dislike was traffic noise from nearby motorway, but it wasn’t that bad.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We have been camping every year for the past 5 years and this is the best campsite we have stayed at. It is a cherry orchard so just one field but loads of room and very pretty. Toilet & showers were always clean, pitches were nice and flat and well maintained. Not having cars on site was also a great idea as our two grandchildren could cycle around safely. We stayed 6 nights and could easily have stayed longer. On arrival we were met by Karen & Simon who made us feel welcome straight away, thank you both and your team, you have an amazing campsite and we hope to return in the future.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The campsite was exactly what we were looking for with our 3 night trip. The campsite overlooks a vineyard and our pitch was on the edge where the sun would set. The campsite was peaceful. The facilities were great and very clean. Karen and Simon were fantastic hosts, always on hand should you need them. We will 100% be back again and highly recommend to anyone looking to stay.

Local attractions

Canterbury (20 minutes’ drive) is calling…the town is riddled with UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Canterbury Cathedral, St Augustine’s Abbey and the Church of St Martin. Pick out cute eateries or shops as a resting point as you work your way around its well-documented history. If the olden times excite your mind, Belmont House and Gardens (five minutes) are nearby, with a marvellous walled garden and traditional tea room. There are more bountiful gardens (and righteous insides) at Leeds Castle (25 minutes). Balance your outings with wildlife and a visit to the safari-style The Big Cat Sanctuary (35 minutes). Or perhaps look towards the red pandas and bears lurking at Wingham Wildlife Park (half an hour). Nature also runs fairly wild in the ancient woodlands at Blean Woods National Nature Reserve (half an hour). If you’re in search of more coastal towns, you won't have to look too far. Follow the coast past Herne Bay (25 minutes and a good stop for jet skiing, windsurfing and other watersports) and into the trendy town of Margate (40 minutes) for fish and chips stalls and seaside rides.
