  • Rural pub campsite in the green Kent countryside
  • A quarter of an hour from Deal by car; Broadstairs 30 minutes
  • Food and drink served on site; easy access from the A256
Set down on the edge of a quiet Kentish village…on the outskirts of Tilmanstone, The Plough and Harrow has friendliness down to an art. And if that isn’t already a good start, this welcoming pub is close to the south coast, with seaside spots like Deal (15 minutes' drive) and Broadstairs (half an hour) within striking distance. One thing’s for sure, you can look forward to a laidback break here exploring Kent's seascapes – or relax in the knowledge that you have quick and easy access to the cross-Channel ferries at Dover. The main pub building dates back to the 1850s and with food and drink available in the pub, you shouldn't be troubled by any tummy grumbles. The pub is bordered by a quiet camping field with a range of quality holiday accommodation options. Pets are allowed in the main field, but not in hired accommodation. Plus, toilets and showers are available here, with more amenities available in the pub. The Plough and Harrow is just off the A256, so it won't take long to get yourself somewhere interesting along the Kent coast. While there aren't many more amenities in the village, there is a kids' playground, and nearby Sandwich (10 minutes' drive to the north) has a small but well-stocked supermarket, a handful of independent cafés and good public transport links, including a mainline railway station.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay. It's a quiet site. No children's play area but that's was not a problem for us. They also have glamping pods. The meal at the hosts pub was really lovely with lots of choice. The staff were really helpful and friendly, nothing was too much for them. They have extremely clean showers with shower gels included and very clean toilets. There is also a washing up area. We would highly recommend it this site and definitely use it again.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Location, great spot if you are getting a ferry to France and need a stopover., nice biking or walking routes.

Disliked: We arrived at 2pm only to find the place deserted and the Pub closed, ( the Pub is closed at present which I found out the night before). Spoke to the owner on the phone, who said "yes we saw you down the road as we were leaving". not very welcoming. We pitched up, there are a few grass pitches and a few gravel, but the Motorhome parking is in the pub car park. The Pods are tucked up out of the way, Cannot comment on toilet block because there was no power to this, tried several switches but nothing. It is a shame because there is great potential here. Because of location be aware of distant traffic noise.

Local attractions

Get to know the local haunts… with a pretty promenade and pebbly beach, Deal (15 minutes’ drive) has independent shops, galleries and museums in no short stock. And while Sandwich (10 minutes) might be slightly smaller, medieval life is well-preserved here, with town tours and river trips some of the ways to take in the place properly. Indeed, all these Kentish towns have their fair share of activities… perhaps you’ll want to go for a day's surfing in Broadstairs (30 minutes) or venture into Canterbury (half an hour) to see a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the famed cathedral. Its medieval core has a good bit of history, as do Dover Castle (20 minutes) and Leeds Castle (50 minutes). For those of you who have a soft spot for heart-racing spectator activities, Lydden Hill Race Circuit (25 minutes) pulls off some great racing events throughout the year (just check the calendar in advance). However, in Betteshanger Park (10 minutes), you’ll be the one taking charge, as this country park has cycling trails or mountain biking courses for beginners or pros.
