  • Deluxe cabins sleeping up to five, less than a mile from Canterbury
  • Insulated and double glazed with bathroom and kitchenette
  • Breakfast buffet and supper club available seven days a week
A deluxe cabin… at a youth hostel? Oh yes. Leave your sleeping bag, tent and cooking kit at home and book a berth at YHA Canterbury, in insulated timber camping cabins sleeping up to five people and with a kitchenette in each. (And an ensuite bathroom: no staggering out of one’s tent on a night-time toilet break...) Each cabin has double-glazed windows, a double bed, a single and a set of bunk beds; use the bunk area as a living and seating area during the day (the walls of the cabin slope outwards to give the feeling of yet more space). All bedding is provided, as are a fridge, microwave, sink, kettle and crockery. And the setting of the cabins… how clever this is too. YHA Canterbury is under a mile from Canterbury city centre, within strolling distance or easily reached by bus in a few minutes from the stop a minute’s walk away. If you’re arriving by car, free overnight and weekend parking is a couple of minutes’ amble away at down Rochester Avenue or St Lawrence. The hostel serves a hot and cold breakfast buffet every morning – take your pick from cold meat, cheese, fruit, yoghurt or a full English – and runs a supper club every evening where guests can mingle over two courses of dishes including pies, curries, burgers, pasties and sausage and mash. Vegetarian options are available every night.

Local attractions

Canterbury and its surrounds are an excellent spot to spend a few days – or weeks at: stay around town for sightseeing and shopping, or venture out to coast and countryside for walks and beaches. Walk just under a mile or get the bus into the city centre from the hostel, to start off with a look at its UNESCO-listed cathedral and a walk around the Roman walls, then (after a hefty lunch), an amble around Canterbury Castle, built in Norman times just after the Battle of Hastings. Canterbury Tales walks around the city’s ancient spots and Chaucer-related history run regularly throughout the year. Also much recommended in Canterbury is The Beaney, a ‘House of Art & Knowledge’ with Café and information centre. Its space covers an art museum, library, exhibition space, art galleries and room for events and activities for all ages. Entry is free and the centre is open seven days a week. Heading into the countryside, have a mini tour of Barnsole Vineyard, set over three acres a 20-minute drive east of Canterbury – followed by a tasting, but of course… Or make for the coast to sample the famed oysters at Whitstable and take a look at The Favourite, the last Whitstable oyster yawl, or ramble the coast path between here and Margate.
