  • Peaceful glamping units on a family-run farm two miles from Elham
  • Canterbury and Kent beaches within a half-hour drive
  • Direct access to a footpath for the half-hour walk to village pubs
The folks at Wild Woodland Retreat knew what they were doing when they named their little Kent site. Wild and wooded it is indeed, in an unspoilt meadow and surrounded by a scenic valley where insects buzz about between the wildflowers and birds nest in the trees. And a retreat it is too – Mark and Hannah have cleverly placed their glamping units in secluded spots around their family-run farm, giving each one plenty of space for guests to run about, light up a campfire or barbie and just generally chill out and admire the view. For a closer look at your surrounds, there’s direct access to a footpath for walks through the fields and down to the nearest village, Elham. It’ll take you half an hour or so to stroll down there for refreshment from the pubs, tearoom and restaurant, or supplies from the village store. If you’ve brought your canine pal along for walkies, they’re welcome to join you at the pub (cue wagging tails). Life here isn’t entirely wild, though: each of the units has access to a private composting loo and hot shower, and has kitchen facilities for sorting fresh-air feasts.

Local attractions

This is a tiptop spot to get out for a trot – as well as the lovely walk into the village, the footpath by the meadow leads to the forest of Park Gate Nature Reserve or the tearooms of the Lord Whisky Sanctuary in about half an hour, or to Stelling Minnis Common and windmill in 40 minutes or so. Park Wood, Westwood, Madams Wood and Covert Wood are also easily accessed for more country strolls. If you’re feeling particularly lively, you can walk all the way to historic Canterbury in a couple of hours (although you’re welcome to choose the 20-minute drive instead to save your energies for wandering around the cathedral, the Roman Museum and the city walls). Seeking some sea air, you can either head south for half an hour or so to the sands of Folkestone and Dymchurch (plus a nostalgic ride on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway) or aim north for Whitstable (40 minutes) or Margate (50 minutes). For beasts somewhat more exotic than those seen on site, take your pick from a trio of wildlife parks: Howletts Wild Animal Park, Port Lympne Reserve and Wingham Wildlife Park are all around a 20-minute drive away.
