  • Luxury yurt in central Canterbury, 15 minutes' walk from the cathedral
  • A 15-minute drive to Whitstable or Howletts Wild Animal Park
  • Log burner, barbecue, outdoor bath and 'secret cinema' snug
There aren’t many locations that can claim to ‘have it all’ – but The Little Yurt Retreat is certainly one of those places where it just might be true. This Kent glamping site manages to cover city, countryside and coast effortlessly from its Canterbury location. City is the obvious place to start, as this spot is right there in the centre, about 10 minutes’ walk from Canterbury West station and 15 minutes from the cathedral. On the countryside front it’s a 20-minute bike ride (or 15-minute drive) to Blean Woods Nature Reserve or half an hour on the bike/15 minutes in the car to the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Beach days? Easily done with an outing to Whitstable (15 minutes’ drive). That’s not to say that the owners have relied on location alone to entice guests in – far from it. Come along here and you’ll be staying in a traditional Mongolian yurt with fabulous luxury facilities including a snuggly double bed, a log burner and large outdoor bath that’s just the spot for a soak and a glass of something as the sun sets (and there’s space for two…) A smart speaker is on hand for the tunes, and you’ll have access to a hob and microwave for cooking – along with a barbecue for alfresco meals. The central location also means plenty of options for dining out or getting deliveries if you prefer. So far, so good? There are two real highlights still to come… The first is the ‘secret cinema’ snug where you can cosy up with all sorts of films on demand – and the second is the frankly fabulous Tardis toilet, which really has to be seen to be believed…

Local attractions

A day or few of pottering around in Canterbury should be on the cards, for sure – obvious highlights include the cathedral, the Roman Museum and the Canterbury Tales exhibit, but there’s much more to enjoy once you factor in boat trips, various museums, and lots of independent shops, cafés and bars. You can grab a good breath of country air in Blean Woods Nature Reserve (15 minutes’ drive), but for a longer walk you’ll want to head out into the Kent Downs, where trails take in woodlands, villages and historic houses. There’s wildlife to spot along the way – but nothing as large as you’ll encounter on a day at Howletts Wild Animal Park (15 minutes), which houses elephants, gorillas and leopards among others. The Kent coast is calling too – so make your way to Whitstable (15 minutes), Herne Bay (20 minutes) or Margate (35 minutes) for a day of beach fun, seaside walks and seafood.
