  • Peaceful and scenic surroundings close to woodlands and beaches
  • Great village shop, pub and takeaway food within five minutes' walk
  • 20 minutes from Canterbury and the beach at Hythe
Come to Kent for scenic and peaceful surrounds for strolling and family days… and might you like a woodland walk or a beach day too? Have the lot at small and serene Knowler Farm, along with a setting right in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty but a nifty 20-minute drive from Canterbury. This is a firmly rural spot, in an area popular with walkers and cyclists, and within easy reach of Kent highlights like Howletts Wild Animal Park and Leeds Castle. The beach at Hythe is 20 minutes' drive away on the south coast and Whitstable is within 40 minutes on the north. (And if you're escaping from London for the weekend, you can zip down here in under two hours: hail the train from St Pancras and get a bus to the farm from outside the Rose and Crown in Canterbury.) The site is on the edge of the quiet village of Stelling Minnis, where there's a great village shop, a post office and a pub. Several good takeaways are within walking distance, and the neighbouring villages have various pubs and eateries, including a pub within walking distance which serves food on some evenings. Davison's Mill, 10 minutes' walk away, dishes up cream teas on summer Sundays and bank holidays (highly recommended), and the site itself has a small café serving up drinks and cakes.

From the manager: Thank you so much for that lovely end of the season review. Its been a funny old summer with horrid weather for so much of it so its really nice when people do take the time to write a few kind words and especially good to hear you would recommend us as a good campsite. Many thanks from The team at Knowler

Liked: Lovely place to stay, due to being end of season there was only one other camper at the site. Owners were very friendly and were amazing with our kids (4 and 6 years old), they kindly showed us their horses and chickens which the kids loved. Very reasonable price to hire fire pit and wood, i would reccomend their iced coffee from the cafe.

Disliked: Nothing! No wifi, but if you want wifi then go stay in a hotel! :)

From the manager: Thank you for the great review, we really appreciate you taking the time to write a bit about us. I think you must have been one of the last takers for an iced coffee :) its bloomin freezing here now its all hot spiced pumpkin lattes now in the coffee shop! We hope the cafe will be offering full menu for next season and obviously the pizza fridays will be still on the go, they've been very popular this year with campers and villagers alike. Music evenings and open mic nights on for 2024 too so lots to visit for. Thanks alot guys all the best Knowler Farm camp site team x

Buttercup non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Quiet site with the freedom to pitch anywhere. Any noisy campers were requested to keep volume down by vigilant camp managers. They made sure all other campers were happy with the level of noise. Wayne, the owner, was helpful and obliging with information. Solar camps showers were excellent - hot and powerful.

Disliked: Facilities basic but serviceable, though toilet hut floor could have been cleaned a little more frequently. Appreciate that long grass would have been walked in constantly - so minor issue.

From the manager: Thank you for the review of our site and your comments have been taken on board. Dear old busy Wayne does get into the toilets to do a clean at least twice a day but the combination of the wet weather, which we have had so much of :( and if there has been a recent mow this does lead to a messy floor and it could probably do with a mop more frequently. Pleased you liked the rest of it though and that you will visit again all the best The Giffords

Liked: Nice Village pub and shop nearby ,good bus service into Canterbury .

Disliked: The site seems as though the owners have lost interest , everything is a little run down and in need of some TLC .We never met anyone from the site over our three night stay ,phone calls were not answered ,a mower over the field would have been good . lots of private signs about and a ring bell for attention notice but no bell . Its a shame as it probably was good five years ago .

From the manager: No it's a great site honest!! we've worked so hard on it over the last 5 years!!.I'm sorry you feel you were neglected it's very unlike anyone here at Knowler Farm, as you can see from the reviews, we are renown for our friendly welcome so I'm very sorry you missed out. We have to keep the grass at a certain length as the British weather often being wet means short grass gets churned up by cars and turns to mud quickly, the mid length grass is the compromise, we are a working farm outside of the camping season. We have certainly not lost interest in the campsite and we are really saddened that you have made this comment. We are making improvements all the time such as the on site coffee shop which is open every day for our campers, I dont know how you missed it or any of us we are literally here 24/7 !! The only private sign is to the house and farmyard itself and that is more for safety really, we cant have members of the public wandering around for obvious reasons. We are very lucky with the great pub and our village shop is the best. Thank you for your observations and comments though, we do appreciate feedback and will act on it where ever we feel able.

Local attractions

Nature spotters will find species aplenty around the 124-acre common and the countryside surroundings of local village Stelling Minnis, an ancient pastureland still used for grazing in more modern times. Several ponds on the minnis are home to toads and newts; around the grassland and woodland, look out for voles and badgers, weasels and shrews, woodpeckers, nightingales and barn and long-eared owls. Culture seekers can see shows at the Gulbenkien or Marlowe theatres, both just outside Canterbury, or head into the city to roam around its ancient sites including Canterbury Cathedral. If you're up for hearing the story of how Chaucer developed and wrote his famed tales, the Canterbury Tales tour runs throughout the year daily from St Margaret's Street. For history of a different era, Hawthorne Trench, Elham (10 minutes' drive) is a reconstruction of the Great War trenches of the Somme region that's worth a visit on open days. Those off to the nearest beach at Hythe should hop on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway to chuff along almost 14 miles to Dungeness, via the Kent coastal spots of Dymchurch, St. Mary's Bay, New Romney and Romney Sands.
