  • Peaceful and scenic surroundings close to woodlands and beaches
  • Great village shop, pub and takeaway food within five minutes' walk
  • 20 minutes from Canterbury and the beach at Hythe
Come to Kent for scenic and peaceful surrounds for strolling and family days… and might you like a woodland walk or a beach day too? Have the lot at small and serene Knowler Farm, along with a setting right in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty but a nifty 20-minute drive from Canterbury. This is a firmly rural spot, in an area popular with walkers and cyclists, and within easy reach of Kent highlights like Howletts Wild Animal Park and Leeds Castle. The beach at Hythe is 20 minutes' drive away on the south coast and Whitstable is within 40 minutes on the north. (And if you're escaping from London for the weekend, you can zip down here in under two hours: hail the train from St Pancras and get a bus to the farm from outside the Rose and Crown in Canterbury.) The site is on the edge of the quiet village of Stelling Minnis, where there's a great village shop, a post office and a pub. Several good takeaways are within walking distance, and the neighbouring villages have various pubs and eateries, including a pub within walking distance which serves food on some evenings. Davison's Mill, 10 minutes' walk away, dishes up cream teas on summer Sundays and bank holidays (highly recommended), and the site itself has a small café serving up drinks and cakes.

What customers say

Knowler Farm is praised for its spacious, peaceful setting and exceptionally friendly, helpful owners. Facilities, including toilets and showers, are generally reported as clean, though some visitors note they are basic. The on-site cafe and proximity to local shops and pubs are highlighted as benefits. While most experiences are overwhelmingly positive, a few guests mentioned minor issues with signage or facility maintenance. The campsite is recommended for its relaxed atmosphere and good value.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked It was nice to hear the owls and night which were very close. Good coffee in the cafe. Great local shop. Nice people.

Disliked These seemed like really nice people so the following is feedback which I hope they will use to improve their site, or make the necessary changes to the description. When calling to confirm booking they didn't have our booking details. Eventually, after searching they 'found' us. No personal greeting when we arrived or any contact with owners during our stay. This site was not as per description. Images need updating. We booked it because it was supposed to be a quite site and adults only. On two occasions there were children on site. Toilets and showers were dirty. They had not responded to previous comments from a couple of years ago and to date about this. On our last night they had an open mic night with loud music. I spoke to them about this on the night, saying this wasn't on the description. They admitted it wasn't on Pitchup but it was advertised on their website. Will be seeking a refund for our last night. T&Cs say no music, " This is a quiet site, no music allowed." A couple camping were playing music too. Cars and people going back and forth in the evening and early morning, sometimes at approx 4-5am. The pub in walking distance of the camp site does not sell food. Description says there are pubs near to the camp site but the ones we came a cross were all closed down. Recommend owners review and research what is happening locally and update their site description. Can appreciate they can't be responsible for other businesses closing. All in all a noisy site, OK if you don't mind cockerels at 3.30/4am, cars, people talking and music. Sign about facilities hadn't been updates in sometime and had faded. Not worth £23 a night. Features lists compost toilet, didn't see this. Ice pack freezing wasn't actually available unless you asked them, which was inconvenient as you had to access their freezer. Rules say adults only. Couldn't see a specific reception area. Description needs to change from a quite site, to mention it is a working farm with lots of activity and can be noisy. Cockerels etc isn't that bad, just would have been nice to not have been woken early whilst on holiday, by them or all the traffic and talking later at night and early morning.

From the manager: Eeeerrrmm well, we dont really know how to respond to this review. Maybe the first mistake that you made was that we are certainly NOT a "caravan and motorhome club site" we are a farm campsite. We definitely dont want to cater just for huge caravans, we are much more of a traditional campsite. We describe our site as a basic, quiet, friendly campsite, which exactly what we are. You were on our adult site and the one very small child that was there for that one afternoon, was just visiting grandparents and was certainly not in any way causing any noise or nuisance. We are, of course delighted and relieved to know, that we are only the" second worst site" you've stayed in and not the first!! :) However I am totally devastated that you've called my lovely little buzzing cafe "worn out". I think you may have totally missed what we are aiming for here. The cafe is made out of reclaimed, recycled and donated items from friends and strangers alike. It does indeed serve very delicious food, thank you so much for your kind acknowledgement of that fact.. Here at Knowler Farm we are trying to minimise carbon footprint and wastage which is something close to our hearts. Something which is very much put accross to our clients in the description and reflected in the reviews of our farm site on Pitchup, for the most part they all appreciate and "get it". I'm sorry we were not the shiny and sparkling site you were looking for.
Kind Regards
The friendly, helpful campsite crew of Knowler Farm x

Local attractions

Nature spotters will find species aplenty around the 124-acre common and the countryside surroundings of local village Stelling Minnis, an ancient pastureland still used for grazing in more modern times. Several ponds on the minnis are home to toads and newts; around the grassland and woodland, look out for voles and badgers, weasels and shrews, woodpeckers, nightingales and barn and long-eared owls. Culture seekers can see shows at the Gulbenkien or Marlowe theatres, both just outside Canterbury, or head into the city to roam around its ancient sites including Canterbury Cathedral. If you're up for hearing the story of how Chaucer developed and wrote his famed tales, the Canterbury Tales tour runs throughout the year daily from St Margaret's Street. For history of a different era, Hawthorne Trench, Elham (10 minutes' drive) is a reconstruction of the Great War trenches of the Somme region that's worth a visit on open days. Those off to the nearest beach at Hythe should hop on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway to chuff along almost 14 miles to Dungeness, via the Kent coastal spots of Dymchurch, St. Mary's Bay, New Romney and Romney Sands.
