Knowler Farm: Pitches field

General

  • Peaceful and scenic surroundings close to woodlands and beaches
  • Great village shop and excellent food pub within five minutes' walk
  • 20 minutes from Canterbury and the beach at Hythe

Come to Kent for scenic and peaceful surrounds for strolling and family days… and might you like a woodland walk or a beach day too? Have the lot at small and serene Knowler Farm, along with a setting right in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty but a nifty 20-minute drive from Canterbury.

This is a firmly rural spot, in an area popular with walkers and cyclists, and within easy reach of Kent highlights like Howletts Wild Animal Park and Leeds Castle. The beach at Hythe is 20 minutes' drive away on the south coast and Whitstable is within 40 minutes on the north. (And if you're escaping from London for the weekend, you can zip down here in under two hours: hail the train from St Pancras and get a bus to the farm from outside the Rose and Crown in Canterbury.)

The site is on the edge of the quiet village of Stelling Minnis, where there's a great vilage shop, a post office and a food pub that's highly recommended by the Knowler Farm team. Davison's Mill, 10 minutes' walk away, dishes up cream teas on summer Sundays.

Please note

This is a quiet park: no music is allowed.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Dogs are not allowed during high season between 01/08 and 10/09.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Lovely site, very peaceful with ample space on each pitch, lots of greenery and a fabulous farm shop on site! Getting on site and finding our pitch was quick and easy and we only had a two minute walk for supplies in the mornings. A back-to-basics site, which is exactly how we like it. Facilities clean and functional.

We stayed in the buttercup field for a long weekend, the field was not huge, but by no means was it overcrowded. It was almost completely surrounded by hedges and was relatively flat, which added to privacy and helped with sleeping. The owners were extremely welcoming and accommodating, with Wayne regularly checking in to make sure we were ok and give us advice on the local sites. The toilets and showers were clean and if I had to make a recommendation then a bench in the showers would be helpful. Otherwise a great weekend away, only wish we had more time!

From the manager...

Thank you so much and very well done for your intrepid duckling rescue. We were really hoping they would find their way to our pond as we would love some wild ducks to stay for a while but so far no sign, keeping our fingers crossed. Pleased Isla was up to scratch, I may be able to get Wayne away for another short break in the next 5 years at this rate :) Hope we see you again soon.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a complimentary and informative review. We are very fortunate to have a great shop and pub on the Minnis, they've saved our bacon(literally!) on many occasions.

Better signage from the road would have been helpful but we found it in the end and perhaps not having it so well-signposted makes it more peaceful and private.

Local attractions

Nature spotters will find species aplenty around the 124-acre common and the countryside surroundings of local village Stelling Minnis, an ancient pastureland still used for grazing in more modern times. Several ponds on the minnis are home to toads and newts; around the grassland and woodland, look out for voles and badgers, weasels and shrews, woodpeckers, nightingales and barn and long-eared owls.

Culture seekers can see shows at the Gulbenkien or Marlowe theatres, both just outside Canterbury, or head into the city to roam around its ancient sites including Canterbury Cathedral. If you're up for hearing the story of how Chaucer developed and wrote his famed tales, the Canterbury Tales tour runs throughout the year daily from St Margaret's Street. For history of a different era, Hawthorne Trench, Elham (10 minutes' drive) is a reconstruction of the Great War trenches of the Somme region that's worth a visit on open days.

Those off to the nearest beach at Hythe should hop on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway to chuff along almost 14 miles to Dungeness, via the Kent coastal spots of Dymchurch, St. Mary's Bay, New Romney and Romney Sands.

Must see

  • Canterbury Tales (11.1 kilometres)
  • St Augustine's Abbey (11.1 kilometres)
