  • Peaceful and scenic surroundings close to woodlands and beaches
  • Great village shop, pub and takeaway food within five minutes' walk
  • A 15-minute drive from Canterbury; 25 minutes from the beach at Hythe
Come to Kent for scenic and peaceful surrounds for strolling and family days… and might you like a woodland walk or a beach day too? Have the lot at small and serene Knowler Farm, along with a setting right in the Kent Downs National Landscape but a nifty 15-minute drive from Canterbury. This is a firmly rural spot, in an area popular with walkers and cyclists, and within easy reach of Kent highlights like Howletts Wild Animal Park and Leeds Castle. The beach at Hythe is 25 minutes' drive away on the south coast and Whitstable is within 40 minutes on the north. (And if you're escaping from London for the weekend, you can zip down here in under two hours: hail the train from St Pancras and get a bus to the farm from outside the Rose and Crown in Canterbury.) The site is on the edge of the quiet village of Stelling Minnis, where there's a great village shop, a post office and a pub. Several good takeaways are within walking distance, and the neighbouring villages have various pubs and eateries, including a pub within walking distance which serves food on some evenings. Davison's Mill, 10 minutes' walk away, dishes up cream teas on summer Sundays and bank holidays (highly recommended). There's food on site, too, in the form of a small café serving up drinks and cakes, plus pizza on Friday nights. There's also a live acoustic music night once per month. Aside from food, bushcraft/forest school and archery experiences are available with qualified teachers on the farm; families and friends are welcome.

What customers say

Knowler Farm's peaceful vibes, ripper hosts & rural setting are big hits. The cafe's a winner, as are the clean amenities & roomy sites. Some reckon showers are a bit basic or temp's dodgy, and signs could be better. Great for a chill break near local sights.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Peaceful village surroundings with easy walk to pub and convenience store away from main roads. Clean facilities. The site is flat and grassy. Friendly manager popped over and even helped me when I needed advice on erecting my tent. Also good mobile phone data connection at the site so watched my favourites

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Hot shower, clean toilets, really friendly welcome and peace and quiet / only 1 other camper on the field.
Village had a very well stocked shop and a friendly pub.
We had pizza at the campsite - lucky enough to order as we arrived for later that evening.
Opportunity to have a campfire but we didn’t bother - bikepacking and a 30km ride meant we were tucked up in bed at 8pm!!!

Disliked Absolutely nothing!!

Liked We've stayed at Knowler Farm a few times now over the past couple of years and we love it. The owners are very welcoming. The field is lovely and flat. The toilets and showers are always clean and tidy. The area is peaceful and quiet. And, in the morning's you can purchase hot drinks and light snacks from their on-site shop.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked The site is very quiet- there is no road noise at all. The area around it is really pretty and you can walk to a well stocked shop in a few minutes. The showers and toilets are basic, but fine. There are no allocated pitches and no one to greet you when you arrive ( the friendly owner comes over to the site sometimes) The gate is on the right shortly after you turn in on the gravel lane. We had an enjoyable stay.

Disliked The description makes it sound like there is a cafe onsite and pub food within walking distance, but there isn’t. The cafe was closed over the whole bank holiday weekend that we were there.
There is a nice dressing room beside the showers, but the lock on the door doesn’t work . The sign for the campsite is really small and easy to miss. We felt there was a general lack of information about the site and area compared to other sites we have stayed on. I feel having no one to greet you and no reception area is unhelpful.

From the manager: Pleased you enjoyed the area and the campsite and facilities were fine for you. The coffee shop is definitely on the farm with a gate from the site leading to it and it is open every day from 9.30am to 1pm and until 3pm on Saturdays. We close at 1pm on Sundays and on Bank Holiday mondays as our village Windmill opens in the Afternoons on these days, offering cream teas and we like to support them. There is a notice board with cafe opening times in the toilet block. This also has details of events and other things of interest on it. We are a working farm and although we are not able to greet everyone when they arrive we try our very best to get to see you and check if you need anything. Wayne can usually be found out there morning, noon and night chatting with everyone!!!
The campsite sign gets bigger each year as it does seem to be a problem for many of our guests. Unless we set it up in neon lights I think it will always be a bit of a problem in such a rural area. The Minnis is an AONB as as such there are very strict rules about signs. We will definitly think again and see if we can make some improvements.
Thank you for your comments we will be taking it all on board and the lock is going on as I type :)
Next time you come find me in the cafe for a cuppa on the house.
Many thanks

Local attractions

Nature spotters will find species aplenty around the 124-acre common and the countryside surroundings of local village Stelling Minnis, an ancient pastureland still used for grazing in more modern times. Several ponds on the minnis are home to toads and newts; around the grassland and woodland, look out for voles and badgers, weasels and shrews, woodpeckers, nightingales and barn and long-eared owls. Culture seekers can see shows at the Gulbenkien or Marlowe theatres, both just outside Canterbury, or head into the city to roam around its ancient sites including Canterbury Cathedral. If you're up for hearing the story of how Chaucer developed and wrote his famed tales, the Canterbury Tales tour runs throughout the year daily from St Margaret's Street. For history of a different era, Hawthorne Trench, Elham (10 minutes' drive) is a reconstruction of the Great War trenches of the Somme region that's worth a visit on open days. Those off to the nearest beach at Hythe should hop on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway to chuff along almost 14 miles to Dungeness, via the Kent coastal spots of Dymchurch, St. Mary's Bay, New Romney and Romney Sands.
