Knowler Farm: Set up

General

  • Peaceful and scenic surroundings close to woodlands and beaches
  • Great village shop and excellent food pub within five minutes' walk
  • 20 minutes from Canterbury and the beach at Hythe

Come to Kent for scenic and peaceful surrounds for strolling and family days… and might you like a woodland walk or a beach day too? Have the lot at small and serene Knowler Farm, along with a setting right in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty but a nifty 20-minute drive from Canterbury.

This is a firmly rural spot, in an area popular with walkers and cyclists, and within easy reach of Kent highlights like Howletts Wild Animal Park and Leeds Castle. The beach at Hythe is 20 minutes' drive away on the south coast and Whitstable is within 40 minutes on the north. (And if you're escaping from London for the weekend, you can zip down here in under two hours: hail the train from St Pancras and get a bus to the farm from outside the Rose and Crown in Canterbury.)

The site is on the edge of the quiet village of Stelling Minnis, where there's a great vilage shop, a post office and a food pub that's highly recommended by the Knowler Farm team. Davison's Mill, 10 minutes' walk away, dishes up cream teas on summer Sundays.

Please note

This is a quiet campground/park: no music is allowed.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Reception is unmanned after 5 p.m.. Please inform the campground while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time so that the team can provide information about your unit/site.

Dogs are not allowed during high season between 01/08 and 10/09.

The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dog Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

We stayed post summer chaos...the campste was very quiet, almost empty, facilities great but basic. Would stay again. An ideal stop off point if you need to get a ferry out of Dover. The site is 35 minutes from the Dover ferry terminal and you pass a garage on the way to fill up with fuel.

    Disliked:

    Nothing really. All good.

Thank you for your review, we are just beginning to enjoy the wind down after a wonderfully busy season with a great bunch of happy campers.... enjoy your travels pop in when you are next travelling to or back from Europe

Everything as always. We stay here many times through the year and it's always such a nice place to stay. Quiet surroundings, flat pitches, clean facilities and barbecues and fire pits allowed, it's a perfect campsite and very reasonably priced. Great little shop just a few minutes walk away too that has increased its stock over the years clearly with campers in mind.
Wayne and his family are fantastic hosts and the coffee and cake shop and seating area are an amazing addition to the farm, we're hoping to get one more visit in before the end of season but if not we will definitely be returning next year and hopefully trying the finished article of iced lemon tea after being a guinea pig for the first batch😃.
Hope you enjoyed the beers Wayne, see you all again soon, Teddy will be back to chase the golf buggy!

    Disliked:

    Nothing!

From the manager...

You guys are the best!! We absolutely love having this truly amazing family to stay and we hope you manage another visit before the season is over. More sugar was the verdict from my family for the iced lemon tea so you must have been being very polite when you tried it, very impressed as it didnt show on your faces at all hahaha. Tank is already missing Teddy(I think Wayne is too!) Thank you so much for the great review see you again soon.

Laura consider the shelf done!! It's his first job tomorrow hahaha!! really thanks for the feedback though, that is the sort of thing we can remedy easily. Pleased you enjoyed the stay and hope we will see you next season to try the shelf out :)

The showers were really pleasant and warm, the toilets were well organised and smelled okay if a bit basic. Staff were really friendly and helpful, great stay, would go again.

    Disliked:

Not much of a view but thats to be expected given the flat countryside and the Minnis offered great walks.

From the manager...

Yup you booked in the "Wild camping field" where clean and basic is what we have on offer. Whilst theres no mountains or sea in Stelling Minnis we are in the middle of the unique Kent Downs and Wayne could have directed you on your walks on footpath from the farm to the most amazing views, The North Downs way is spectacular so you must take a look next time. As you say though the 120 odd acres of Minnis that you can walk on is also very pretty despite the fact that it's parched like most places with no rain for months. Thank you for the review glad you would come again. all the best.

Local attractions

Nature spotters will find species aplenty around the 124-acre common and the countryside surroundings of local village Stelling Minnis, an ancient pastureland still used for grazing in more modern times. Several ponds on the minnis are home to toads and newts; around the grassland and woodland, look out for voles and badgers, weasels and shrews, woodpeckers, nightingales and barn and long-eared owls.

Culture seekers can see shows at the Gulbenkien or Marlowe theatres, both just outside Canterbury, or head into the city to roam around its ancient sites including Canterbury Cathedral. If you're up for hearing the story of how Chaucer developed and wrote his famed tales, the Canterbury Tales tour runs throughout the year daily from St Margaret's Street. For history of a different era, Hawthorne Trench, Elham (10 minutes' drive) is a reconstruction of the Great War trenches of the Somme region that's worth a visit on open days.

Those off to the nearest beach at Hythe should hop on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway to chuff along almost 14 miles to Dungeness, via the Kent coastal spots of Dymchurch, St. Mary's Bay, New Romney and Romney Sands.

  • Canterbury Tales (11.1 kilometres)
  • St Augustine's Abbey (11.1 kilometres)
