  • Canterbury and Dover 25 minutes’ drive; Folkestone 20 minutes
  • Hardstanding pitches with farmland views; shop five minutes’ drive
Looking for a stopover on the way to the Channel ports, or equally well a longer stay to explore a spectacular corner of Kent? A night or two at Elham Valley Halt puts you right in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and within stomping distance of Dover and Canterbury (both 25 minutes’ drive). This low-key, adults-only site has views over Kent farmland from its few hardstanding motorhomes pitches. There’s no worry about security as they’re in the grounds of a private family home, and while the drive onto the site is plenty wide enough for your vehicle, no trailers are permitted. On site you’re pretty much left to your own devices; barbecues are allowed and you can pick up bits and pieces for alfresco suppers from the essentials store in Elham village (five minutes’ drive). If you’re keen to get out and about exploring the Kent countryside, leave your vehicle secure on the its pitch and take the number 17 bus route (the stop is five minutes’ walk), which runs into either Canterbury and Folkestone.

Local attractions

Historic Elham (five minutes’ drive) sits in the middle of the Kent Downs AONB, and if you’re keen to explore on foot, make a start there with a potter around its timber-framed and Tudor-style houses. In the village, you can join a circular walk around its hinterlands, or hop on to the Elham Valley Way and hike through orchards and woodland (carpeted with bluebells in spring) to Canterbury (three and a half hours’ walk). Alternatively, catch the bus into Canterbury (25 minutes’ drive) and tour the famed cathedral to see where Thomas à Becket was murdered in 1170. Have a nose around the half-timbered architecture of Old City Canterbury, and if you’re running short on reading material, visit the bookshop in the crooked Sir John Boys House. If you’re craving a day on the coast, head for Folkestone (20 minutes) where you can loll on the beach and dip your toes into the English Channel, before heading to the lively dining hub at Folkestone Harbour Arm to graze at the street-food kiosks.
