  • Spacious tent pitches on a well-kept woodland and orchard site
  • In Chartham Hatch, a small village three miles from central Canterbury
  • Views over the city and countryside; next to a community playground
Countryside breaks with city views are in store at Bigberry Farm, a peaceful site on the edge of Chartham Hatch just three miles from central Canterbury. Set in gorgeous Kent countryside on a farm that brings together fields, woodlands and a well-tended orchard, this classic tents-only site is a proper wildlife haven, with foxes, squirrels, rabbits and birds of prey all making frequent appearances. The pitches here are semi-natural and surrounded by trees (the site owners lovingly describe them as 'slightly wonky'), but the scenery more than makes up for the lack of polish. Bigberry Farm is a family-friendly spot; kids who are full of beans are just next door to a community playground in Chartham Hatch. Most of the on-site amenities are of a practical kind, with helpful additions like chemical toilets (flush toilets are also available five minutes' walk from the pitches in the farmyard). Showers aren't available on the farm, but there are plenty of opportunities to scrub up at a local leisure centre a couple of miles down the road. The site is campfire-friendly and allows barbecues if you fancy becoming your travel team's camp cook. A well-rated restaurant is also on hand a mile down the road close to the traffic-free path that runs along the Great Stour river. Needless to say, walkers will thrive at this rural site, which is also a few hundred yards from the lovely North Downs Way.

Local attractions

Starting off in Canterbury (10 minutes' drive), you have a whole host of family-friendly attractions to work your way around: delve deep into the ancient city's past at the Westgate Towers Museum and take in the vistas from its viewpoint, head to the Cathedral quarter for spectacular architecture or catch a live show or concert at The Marlowe Theatre. Other top Kent attractions are similarly close by, including the curious creatures at Howletts Wild Animal Park (15 minutes) and the ever-popular Port Lympne Reserve (30 minutes) within easy reach for walks on the wild side. Diggerland Kent (30 minutes) is another nearby kid-pleaser, while Dymchurch Amusement Park (40 minutes) is the place to be for classic seaside rides and slides. Also on the coast, Dover Castle (30 minutes) and the tunnels in the cliff are well worth investigating, or for sunnier spots you could try the beaches at Margate, Broadstairs or Ramsgate (all 40 minutes). And for leisure spots inland? Belmont House and Gardens (25 minutes), Leeds Castle (35 minutes) and Bodiam Castle (an hour) are all worth the trip.

Liked: The remoteness, left alone, toilet, peace and quiet, wildlife - a really lovely ‘wild camping’ site that I will like to use again as only half hour from home but you wouldn’t think the city was only a mile away.

Disliked: Nothing really just some general feedback but no box for it: maybe leave a container of water; it would be quite cramped with 6 pitches the site would need clearing a bit for that as the edges quite rocky and nettly.
