Probably every pony-mad child’s dream, the dinky wooden camping pods at Nelson Park Riding Centre are next to a working stables and riding school, with horses and ponies (and sometimes foals) grazing in neighbouring fields. Based in Birchington, Thanet, this is an ideal base for exploring the Kent coastline, whether on two legs, two wheels or on horseback. The cosy units are thermally insulated and double-glazed, and powered by mains electricity so you’ll have no problem charging up devices. Behind the pods, there’s a separate kitchen with simple facilities including a kettle and cold running water, plus a vending machine for all-day attacks of snacking. Separate blocks contain basic showers and loos. Westwood Cross Shopping Centre (10 minutes’ drive) is your best bet for picking up supplies from the major supermarkets, and there’s a few fast-food options around there too. Head to Broadstairs (15 minutes) for a larger selection of restaurants and pubs along the seafront.
