  • Tiny, family-friendly site on an Isle of Wight goat farm
  • A 10-minute drive to Blackgang Chine; footpaths and cycling nearby
  • Pub and shop nearby; barbecue stands; fresh produce sold on site
It may be small, but Kingston Smallholding Goat Farm Campsite is mighty fine. This is a tiny, family-friendly site with a difference, down to eco-friendly facilities and fresh produce for sale… and it’s all part of a wacky, six-acre smallholding on the Isle of Wight with over fifty goats, a handful of pigs, a flock of hens and five farmyard cats. Between Shorwell and Chale Green and surrounded by farmlands on all sides, the goat farm is a short drive away from the island’s main cycling and walking routes and just two miles from the south coast (where you can link up with the coastal path). There’s no electricity or hot running water, but what you do have are composting toilets, a shower-in-a-shed, utility sinks and plenty of cold water that can be heated up over a firepit. There’s unlimited free wood for that, together with several barbecue stands for those of you who can’t pass up a good grilling session. If you really want to get the group’s mouths watering, there’s fresh produce sold on the site that will help you out. Up for grabs are frozen goat meat, cheese, milk and fresh eggs. For anything else, the village shop and pub are just five minutes’ drive away. Please note that due to the goats, no dogs are allowed but school children can stay for half price.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This is a fantastic place to experience "real" camping. Compost toilet, cooking on fire etc. If you want glamping and electric hook ups you may need to go elsewhere

Disliked: I didn't dislike anything at our stay, but it probably wouldn't be the best place for pouring rain.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: A really great camping experience. Location is really rural and quiet yet very easy to get to. The tiny hamlet of Kinston is about a ten minute cycle ride from Shorewell village in the beautiful west wight. ( set amongst miles and miles of rolling green hills and farmland.) Genuinely warm welcome from the campsite owners who introduce you to how everything works. As an eco campsite, the facilities are basic but perfectly adequate and well thought out. Be prepared for composting toilets and their innovative shower in a shed. A thrilling experience but if you are an early riser like me you will need to top the solar shower unit up with hot water from the wood fed boiler which actually I just loved! Showers here really do feel like both an adventure and an accomplishment. Pitch I chose was spacious ( all of them are) and had a handy bench right next to it ( Handy as I was in a one man tent and bike packing). The owners make a large assortment of wooden tables and chairs available for anyone who wants them. Just help yourself and return when you’ve finished with them. Unexpected bonus was the availability of makeshift fire pits and an abundant supply of free wood. Who knew old washing machine drums and old tyre rims could be so brilliantly recycled into something this useful! Many campsites charge for a fire pit but here it’s part of the set up you have each night if you’d like it. Everyone on the site took the opportunity for a night fire, with toasting marshmallows providing endless entertainment for both the children and adults on the site. So I just came for a nights camping but I found myself sat outdoors under a star lit sky, with my own proper camp fire basking in its warmth and loosing myself staring into the gently rolling orange glow of its flame. Absolute bliss! An unforgettable experience and one I’d challenge all campsite owners to experience so they can all up their game. Definitely and experience I will repeat.

Liked: If you want a rural peaceful stay then this is it - love this place and will def go back - my daughter loved the animals and feeding times! Recommend you buy the goat meat and try it as it’s amazing! This is more like wild camping/bush and campfires are allowed here too with all wood supplied 5*s

Disliked: Nothing

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely lovely experience. The farm is a dream for children. My two 9 years old daughters fed the goats, pigs and chickens every day and even loved helping with the maintenance of their stalls using straw and hay. The farm is safe and the kids could run around at will. For myself, I enjoyed the extremely relaxed atmosphere and how much stuff there is around for camp fires and similar. The owners, Simone and David are lovely people and their friendly manner made the stay an absolute joy. If you have children that love animals, I cannot imagine a nicer experience.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Open space and quiet atmosphere. Kids were encouraged to talk to the owners about the goats and even helped feed them. Owners very approachable, helpful and friendly and tried hard to ensure campers had what they needed. A useful orientation was given upon arrival. A lovely, blank canvas of a field to let campers camp as they wanted to. Campfires were encouraged with firepits and wood accessible. Night skies were amazing! Eco compost toilets- remember a bright light for night trips- but were easy to use.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: An incredible experience all round. The owners of the farm were incredibly friendly and we met so many incredible people. It's not like a regular campsite, it's full of random fun things (bicycles, an old tractor, washing machine drums repurposed as firepits...) and really made our holiday! Thank you so much for letting us stay on your wonderful farm :)

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This is an eco site but offered at a high standard. Owners were friendly and accommodating. Eco loos were well maintained and kept fresh with loo paper, lots of sawdust or equivalent and sprays to keep it clean. Sinks and basins had liquid soaps and hand gel. Some really lovely personal touches. The communal area offered well used chairs, table and toys etc to borrow. Loved the outdoor oven - back to basics. You can have alter fires and there are drums to make these and plenty of wood to burn. Just a lovely back to basics site!

Disliked: Not a dislike but point of note, the shower is eco so cold unless you heat up some water and add it to the tank. But an amazing back to basics system!
