General

  • Award-winning park in a nine-acre wildlife haven
  • Carefully managed to attract and enhance local wildlife
  • Barbecue areas, picnic tables and well-kept amenities

It’s all about the three Rs at award-winning Heathfield Farm Camping on the Isle of Wight…Or possibly four. Or five? These nine acres of countryside are decidedly relaxed and rural; the well-kept amenities have been recently refurbished; and, as it’s a wildlife haven, it’s a fairly reasonable bet you’ll see a resident red squirrel or two: Heathfield has been the recipient of many David Bellamy Gold Conservation Awards and carefully manages its habitat to attract local birds and beasties.

Running around is a breeze too, with a wildflower meadow for canines to roll around in and a roomy playing field for ball games and kids to let off steam – parents can ensure relaxation while this happens by prepping dinner/supping wine at the adjacent barbecue areas and picnic tables.

As mentioned among the Rs above, the amenity buildings at Heathfield Farm Camping are refurbished and up to date: guests have access to showers and loos, hairdryers and shaver points, wash cubicles and a separate wheelchair-accessible room with shower and toilet, all kept to smartly high standards.

Specially planted native trees and shrubs shelter most of the park’s roomy and marked pitches, all of which are level, easily accessible and with electric hook-up.

Although Heathfield has a remote and rural feel, its West Wight location is only a mile from the shops and eating emporia of Freshwater village. Once you’re ready to venture off a-field, the new tourist information office has stacks of literature on what to do locally, and the information board on site has maps with colour coded walks into bridlepaths of the surrounding countryside. Even more handily, the island’s bus network has a stop outside the park – just the ticket for some restful roaming…

Large pitches and friendly staff to help you. Facilities were good with four female toilets, three showers and two wash cubicles. The wildlife improvements they have made make it feel like a very rural location although you are only a five minute walk away from local amenities including local shops. The site is also only a five minute drive from the Needles attraction.

We booked to stay at Heathfield campsite for Cowes week so our dates had to fit in with that. We were greeted on arrival by the site wardens who showed us to our pitch, thoughtfully located away from the children's play area, and showed us the facilities.
The site was clean and well kept and very well organised, the pitches large, level and well spaced and neatly mowed. The wardens were helpful, very friendly and good fun, always ready with a smile and a joke. Nothing was too much trouble for them - they really were absolute diamonds.
There was a cabin dedicated to local information about the Isle of Wight and local area.
The shower block was spotlessly clean, as were the loo's and indoor kitchen/utility area.
There were ample sinks for washing up and constant hot water, 2 coin operated washing machines, 1 tumble dryer and an iron and ironing board. We stayed at Heathfield campsite for 2 weeks and were impressed with how well things were run, despite the site being very busy with a large number of families and children around. The wardens kept an eye on everything I felt the site was very secure. There is a barrier entrance which is closed from 10pm to 7am, and provided parking area for those back later than 10pm. The toilet block was well lit outside and lights on sensors for the inside areas.
I can't praise the wardens on site highly enough!!
Although we don't have kids or dogs, the site certainly seemed very child and dog friendly with ample facilities for both.
The site is close to local beaches and shops too.
We will definitely book to stay here again.

    Disliked:

My only dislike was regarding the showers which were small in number and in size - the shower cubicles are a bit narrow with only a small rack to place shower gel etc on, but there were 3 good door hooks to hang clothes and wash bag. I took a carrier bag also to put clothing in. As there are only 3 showers in the ladies block, backed up by 2 'wash cubicles' with hand basins in the toilet block, there was a bit of queue some mornings. I personally didn't have a problem with access, preferring my shower in the evening when very few people seemed to use the showers.

Site is on a quieter side of the island that suited us. Close to Colwell Bay, which has a really good beach side restaurant.

Annie and Brian are great and very accommodating. We would certainly return!

    Disliked:

Family campers were very loud. A lot of screaming throughout the night. Not a lot to be done about that though, as no fault of the site.

Very friendly, helpful and welcoming staff.

Good flat site that drains well.

Pegs go in nice and easy - no rocks etc.

Very family oriented with no noise at all after around 10pm.

Great facilities including washers, tumble dryer, food prep sink, washing up sinks, good showers, free hairdryers, toilets, water stands, chemical toilet disposal, etc etc.

Playing field and large climbing frame for kids. Climbing frame in the middle of electric pitch field so you can keep your eye on them whilst relaxing on your pitch.

Very easy to get to from Yarmouth and only a short distance to a number of beaches and interesting places to visit.

WIFI that actually works! The best and most reasonably priced wifi I have ever used on a campsite. When it rained we were easily able to watch prime video movies without constant buffering or signal drops. Also play games at same time and all for a fiver for the whole week!

    Disliked:

Nothing really. Possibly another toilet or 2 but to be fair never had to wait for one.

It was all good to be fair Annie and Brian do a great job.Shame they have no control over the weather.

    Disliked:

Our pitch was fine , but when the 'weather' hit we were right in the firing line, a bit of shelter around the bottom few pitches where the wind whistles down from the dog field would prevent what happened to our tent. However not a bad reflection of the site they can't be held responsible for the awful weather!

Very friendly and helpful resident wardens who have excellent knowledge of the area and are always ready to help you.

Play area was in the middle of the field so you could see the kids at all times.
Toilets were clean and well maintained.
Staff were really helpful and friendly.
Pitches had ample space and were well spread out so you didn't feel as though you were on top of each others.

    Disliked:

The only little grip I would have is, once checked in you had to drive in and out of same exit, which wasn't clearly marked.
This was something that the staff had to highlight to me, after I tried to re-enter on day two via the wrong Entry gate.

Local attractions

Everywhere on the Isle of Wight is easily reachable by bus or car in the short sort of time that makes the eyes of London commuters water, but if you want to start off on the west side there’s more than enough here to keep all ages happy. Freshwater’s large village (former home of Tennyson, poetry peeps) is edged by the chalk cliffs of Freshwater Bay and its beach, a mix of sand, pebbles and waves popular with watersporters.

Kayak at low tide from Freshwater around the hidden caves used by smugglers in days of yore and to the small bays of Watcombe and Scratchells, or book tuition in kayaking, paddleboarding and surfing from the team at Freshwater’s Isle of Wight Adventure Activities.

The West Wight Sports Centre and Freshwater Bay Golf Club are in the vicinity too, and for those who prefer to bask sandily, the west side of the island has spectacular beaches and excellent bathing water at the bays of Colwell, Compton and Totland.

The 67 miles of spectacularly scenic walks that is the Isle of Wight Coastal Path runs through Freshwater: walk two miles from Heathfield to Yarmouth to access the 14 mile walk to Brighstone, and from there the eight miles to Niton.

If 67 miles of coastline isn’t enough, Wight has over 500 miles of public pathways through towns and villages, over downs and fields, up hills and through woodland: guided tours, including fossil walks, are available all over the island and a walking festival is run every spring and autumn.

Among the most famed attractions on the Isle of Wight are the three chalk stacks of The Needles at Alum Bay, again on Wight’s west side. The activities park built around The Needles has all sorts for all sorts including a 4D cinema, sweet factory, golf course and a funfair with vintage cars for small people to drive, but the main high-light is the chair lift from The Needles overlooking the red cliffs of Alum: bring a camera and a sense of adventure for a tiptop Isle of Wight experience.
