General

  • Award-winning park in a nine-acre wildlife haven
  • Carefully managed to attract and enhance local wildlife
  • Barbecue areas, picnic tables and well-kept amenities

It’s all about the three Rs at award-winning Heathfield Farm Camping on the Isle of Wight…Or possibly four. Or five...

These nine acres of countryside are decidedly relaxed and rural; the well-kept amenities have been recently refurbished; and, as it’s a wildlife haven, it’s a fairly reasonable bet you’ll see a resident red squirrel or two: Heathfield has been the recipient of many David Bellamy Gold Conservation Awards and carefully manages its habitat to attract local birds and beasties.

Running around is a breeze too, with a wildflower meadow for canines to roll around in and a roomy playing field for ball games and kids to let off steam – parents can ensure relaxation while this happens by prepping dinner/supping wine at the adjacent barbecue areas and picnic tables.

Specially planted native trees and shrubs shelter most of the park’s roomy and marked pitches, all of which are level, easily accessible and with electric hook-up.

Although Heathfield has a remote and rural feel, its West Wight location is only a mile from the shops and eating emporia of Freshwater village. Once you’re ready to venture off a-field, the new tourist information office has stacks of literature on what to do locally, and the information board on site has maps with colour coded walks into bridlepaths of the surrounding countryside. Even more handily, the island’s bus network has a stop outside the park – just the ticket for some restful roaming…

Lovely, clean and quiet site29/09/2021

The site is quiet, clean and spacious, with locked traffic barriers from 22:00-07:00.

The wardens are friendly and very knowledgeable on the area and things to do, especially the local walks.

The facilities are cleaned every day and although not many in number, were more than adequate during our stay. Lots of really hot water in the showers and washing up areas.

There is a helpful local information cabin on site, with many leaflets on local attractions.

The recreation field does not allow for dogs, so parents can be pretty sure that anything attached to their child's clothing after play is likely to be mud and not something else! For the young ones, there is a lovely play area in the middle of the site.

The pitches are pretty much level and really spacious. Ours was 28 and didn't allow for pets, except for the campsite fox!

The locality of the campsite is excellent. Only a few miles from The Needles and within easy walking distance for the more energetic. The campsite is only 15 minutes stroll from the local village, where there are several shops, including a Sainsbury's, a Co-op and Morrisons. Should you not wish to cook of an evening, there are local takeaways who will deliver to the campsite gates/visitor area.

    Disliked:

The only things we could have wanted different (and this is being picky!) was the size of the shower cubicles. They are a little small, albeit perfectly functional.

A little gem on the Wight27/09/2021

Absolutely wonderful relaxing site. Pitches are massive with plenty of room between campers so even if your new neighbors do snore it don't matter. Great location for exploring the Wight and plenty of walks straight from the site so no need to drive either. Facilities are kept spotless with regular cleaning by the staff. On-site wardens are lovely and friendly and approachable if you have any queries. Lovely dog exercise area with plenty of wild flowers in there to identify. All in all this place will be defiantly on the revisit list unless i get to move there first.

Local attractions

Everywhere on the Isle of Wight is easily reachable by bus or car in the short sort of time that makes the eyes of London commuters water, but if you want to start off on the west side there’s more than enough here to keep all ages happy. Freshwater’s large village (former home of Tennyson, poetry peeps) is edged by the chalk cliffs of Freshwater Bay and its beach, a mix of sand, pebbles and waves popular with watersporters.

The 67 miles of spectacularly scenic walks that is the Isle of Wight Coastal Path runs through Freshwater: walk two miles from Heathfield to Yarmouth to access the 14 mile walk to Brighstone, and from there the eight miles to Niton.

If 67 miles of coastline isn’t enough, Wight has over 500 miles of public pathways through towns and villages, over downs and fields, up hills and through woodland: guided tours, including fossil walks, are available all over the island and a walking festival is run every spring and autumn.
