Barbecue area and sports field

General

  • Award-winning park in a nine-acre wildlife haven
  • Carefully managed to attract and enhance local wildlife
  • Barbecue areas, picnic tables and well-kept amenities

It’s all about the three Rs at award-winning Heathfield Farm Camping on the Isle of Wight…Or possibly four. Or five...

These nine acres of countryside are decidedly relaxed and rural; the well-kept amenities have been recently refurbished; and, as it’s a wildlife haven, it’s a fairly reasonable bet you’ll see a resident red squirrel or two: Heathfield has been the recipient of many David Bellamy Gold Conservation Awards and carefully manages its habitat to attract local birds and beasties.

Running around is a breeze too, with a wildflower meadow for canines to roll around in and a roomy playing field for ball games and kids to let off steam – parents can ensure relaxation while this happens by prepping dinner/supping wine at the adjacent barbecue areas and picnic tables.

Specially planted native trees and shrubs shelter most of the park’s roomy and marked pitches, all of which are level, easily accessible and with electric hook-up.

Although Heathfield has a remote and rural feel, its West Wight location is only a mile from the shops and eating emporia of Freshwater village. Once you’re ready to venture off a-field, the new tourist information office has stacks of literature on what to do locally, and the information board on site has maps with colour coded walks into bridlepaths of the surrounding countryside. Even more handily, the island’s bus network has a stop outside the park – just the ticket for some restful roaming…

Gap in hedge in ‘enclosed’ dog walk field meant my dog could go through in search of neighbour’s cat! Caused much stress. We were advised to get taxi to pub but not told how easy it was to take a bus!

What a gem of a site this is.... and what lovely friendly wardens Tina and Michael are. The site was spotless, cleaning was maintained twice a day, we felt very safe among all the virus situations. Lots of sanitizing points, bins etc for recycling.

The pitches were a very generous size, everyone was polite and friendly, the view over to Hurst Castle was lovely and the ability to walk into Freshwater village and also the sea just made this the perfect place to rest and relax.

We can't wait to return next year...

The welcome we received from the couple running the site was great. They were helpful and informative, telling us the best way to get to the beach and about the area. We were shown to our pitch which was where I had requested it to be which was so useful. The site was spacious with three fields separated by bushes and trees. It was a quiet site close to the town and the beach although the walk was a bit precarious - we opted to go along the coast road which became rocky - our choice though - we could have walked along the main road and down a side turning - we wanted the pretty way!

    Disliked:

The facilities were disappointing, there were two toilet and wash basin/shower blocks both with 2 toilets for women and 2 basins/showers. There were the same number - I think - of men's facilities. The site was quite large with maybe 50-75 pitches and I could imagine what it would be like in the height of the summer with families/children trying to get into the toilets/washroom areas. I am glad we were there when the summer was over (early September), I only had to wait once to use the facilities due to demand.

I have to say also that the facilities were dated and looking really as though they needed a coat of paint or even replacing. For a site that charges the same as a site we used just the day before that had superb facilities with many toilets, showers and wash basins, a large laundry room and multiple washing up basins, Heathfield seemed a bit over-priced.

Local attractions

Everywhere on the Isle of Wight is easily reachable by bus or car in the short sort of time that makes the eyes of London commuters water, but if you want to start off on the west side there’s more than enough here to keep all ages happy. Freshwater’s large village (former home of Tennyson, poetry peeps) is edged by the chalk cliffs of Freshwater Bay and its beach, a mix of sand, pebbles and waves popular with watersporters.

The 67 miles of spectacularly scenic walks that is the Isle of Wight Coastal Path runs through Freshwater: walk two miles from Heathfield to Yarmouth to access the 14 mile walk to Brighstone, and from there the eight miles to Niton.

If 67 miles of coastline isn’t enough, Wight has over 500 miles of public pathways through towns and villages, over downs and fields, up hills and through woodland: guided tours, including fossil walks, are available all over the island and a walking festival is run every spring and autumn.
