Melt into the farm life at Tatchbury Manor Farm… surrounded by all the scents and noises of a family-run mixed working farm on the edge of the New Forest National Park, this family-friendly site is already home to plenty of farm animals and 20 minutes’ drive away from Southampton’s city centre. Ask the owners to take you around to meet sheep, pigs, cattle, chickens, geese and one turkey. Then, plan out a day in the surrounding New Forest National Park climbing treetops, cycling around the dirt tracks or visiting the nearby wildlife parks and activity farms (both within 10 minutes’ drive of the site). Handily, the nearest beach Calshot Beach, is only 25 minutes’ drive away too and splendid for all manners of watersports. The farm has been in the Hunt family for over 100 years, so get your hands on some of their tasty farm produce. The site operates a click-and-collect farm shop on Fridays and Saturdays, where items such as homemade pies, fresh bread, local (if not homegrown) veggies and meat can be pre-booked. Prep your goods using the full kitchen facility (including an outside fridge, sink and prep area) and sizzle them nicely on the barbecue provided. Mornings are also likely to get off to a good start with the homemade loaf of bread, jam, eggs, milk and starter of coffee tea and sugar provided in the welcome hamper. For both meals, dig in on the American-style outdoors veranda.

Local attractions

Let your wild side loose on the Peppa Pig themed rides at Paultons Park Home of Peppa Pig World (five minutes’ drive). There are lots of attractions nearby for the whole family to get their hands stuck into, including Longdown Activity Farm (10 minutes), a family-run farm where kids can bottle-feed goats or meet the alpacas and donkeys. If you’re a fan of animals, wild animals such as grey wolves, wallabies and otters live and feed at New Forest Wildlife Park (10 minutes). A trip to the beach… there’s more to do than just lounge around at Lepe Country Park (half an hour), a sand and shingle beach. Go kitesurfing, windsurfing or sea kayaking and take a dip in the dedicated swimming area. Another stop along the coast, Lymington (35 minutes) is an ancient seaport town with a beach, seawater baths and fishing boats. And in Hythe Marina Village (15 minutes), take a train across the historic pier and watch the life of a fishing village unfold. One for the city, too? Take a passenger ferry from here into Southampton (20 minutes) for city walls, galleries and lively port. And perhaps look into the cathedral cities of Salisbury (half an hour) and Winchester (25 minutes) too.
