  • Family-friendly site on an organic farm in South Downs National Park
  • Marwell Zoo 25 minutes’ drive; Southsea Beach 35 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; pizza oven; workshops; communal fridge
For a holiday with a low impact on the environment, head to Rushmere Farm, a small site with undesignated pitches on the south-western edges of South Downs National Park, about 10 miles north of Portsmouth (25 minutes’ drive). The owners, who grow cereals organically, will be happy to give you a tour of the facilities, so guests can learn more about regenerative farming methods and the oat-based drink produced on site. If the kids are groaning at the idea of having to learn anything while on holiday, reassure them that there are heaps of more child-friendly activities on and around Rushmere Farm. Running around on the camping field, for starters (that works for the family dog, too); getting messy with flour as they help to prepare pizzas for dinner (there’s a pizza oven); or joining a woodworking session. The surrounding area has no shortage of excellent hiking destinations, with Old Winchester Hill (a nature reserve known for its butterflies and assorted birdlife), plus woodland walks in Catherington Lith Nature Reserve and Forest of Bere, reachable within a 15-minute drive. Then there’s the seaside: pebbly Southsea Beach (35 minutes) is a top spot to sample fish and chips (or an ice cream) as you gaze across the water at the Isle of Wight. The site has basic toilets and showers, plus a washing-up area with cold water and a communal fridge-freezer. The nearest shop is a half-mile away (five minutes, or 10 minutes on foot) or, for more choice, you can head into Waterlooville (10 minutes), which also has a handful of pubs and restaurants.

This peaceful, rural campsite is praised for its quiet atmosphere, beautiful location, and clean, well-maintained facilities including a communal barn with cooking and eating areas. Guests appreciated the rustic charm, eco-friendly approach, and proximity to local attractions. Some minor issues noted include challenging access roads and occasional inconsistencies with hot water in showers, though the manager indicated a willingness to address specific concerns. Liked Quiet rural campsite with everything you need!
We only stayed one night (Sunday) and we were the only ones there.
Toilets/shower and wash facilities are exactly as you’d expect for a farm/campsite, functioning accessible and clean.
We stayed onsite and never ventured off but we knew there is a village a short walk away.
Will definitely return for another relaxed and chilled out stay.
We didn’t see any of the staff/owners but we didn’t need to. We had all we need with us and the toilets were cleaned and replenished.
No WiFi (obviously) but we had full mobile 5G signal at all times.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Loved the site, spacious field - quite a luxury to have plumbing at a campsite like this as well, expected compost toilets of some description (which would have also been fine!). There's a huge barn and spacious cooking / eating area. Was good to have somewhere to shelter and eat comfortably outside of the tent when it rained. Everything was very clean, well put together and thought out. Quiet + far from main road noises. Highlight was robins nesting in the roof of the outbuildings and watching them very efficiently come with food for the chicks, we also saw a frog and the swallows in the barn chasing each other around and chattering. Lots of birdsong - a very healthy ecosystem!

Disliked Nothing to do with the campsite itself or how it is operated, but someone had left a big bag of mixed rubbish in the wrong bins - including recyclables - despite really clear signage in the bin area, on the front of every bin, on the toilet doors, and even on the campsite listing. I felt bad for the owners having to sort through it all. If you're heading off camping, please do be mindful with your waste so the hosts (and other guests) aren't left to deal with it. It's such a small thing that makes a real difference, especially if the site has everything covered (bins for card and paper, metal, food waste, plastic, sanitary - couldn't be easier to figure it out!)

Liked 5 stars, average score. The barn and location was great

Disliked Only one toilet and one shower, can be described rustic but it’s a very outdoor toilet right next to the wash up sinks.
Cold water to wash up.
Grass was overgrown and unmowed.
Didn’t match price point.

Liked Location was great to access Portsmouth. Clear signage but in small letter, difficult to read.

Disliked Facility at the site didn't reflect the price we paid for the weekend. Only cold water for washing dishes. The shower hot water regulator was not working and as a result it was only very hot water.

Local attractions

Residents at Marwell Zoo (25 minutes’ drive) include snow leopards, pygmy hippos, Humboldt penguins and other vulnerable species. The Tropical House, which recreates a rainforest habitat, is home to free-flying birds from Brazil, East Africa and the Indian Ocean. When visiting Portsmouth Historic Dockyard (25 minutes), don’t miss Nelson’s ‘HMS Victory’, which took part in the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar, and the sail-like Spinnaker Tower, with a glass walk and far-reaching views across the harbour, the city and the Isle of Wight. A museum displays the wreckage of the ‘Mary Rose’, said to have been Henry VIII’s favourite ship, which was raised from the seabed in 1982. Collections at National Trust - Hinton Ampner (half an hour) range from 18th-century Italian paintings and period furniture to delicate ceramic figurines and plates. In addition to elegant gardens with sharply manicured topiary, there are acres of parkland with views across the South Downs.
