For a holiday with a low impact on the environment, head to Rushmere Farm, a small site with undesignated pitches on the south-western edges of South Downs National Park, about 10 miles north of Portsmouth (25 minutes’ drive). The owners, who grow cereals organically, will be happy to give you a tour of the facilities, so guests can learn more about regenerative farming methods and the oat-based drink produced on site. If the kids are groaning at the idea of having to learn anything while on holiday, reassure them that there are heaps of more child-friendly activities on and around Rushmere Farm. Running around on the camping field, for starters (that works for the family dog, too); getting messy with flour as they help to prepare pizzas for dinner (there’s a pizza oven); or joining a woodworking session. The surrounding area has no shortage of excellent hiking destinations, with Old Winchester Hill (a nature reserve known for its butterflies and assorted birdlife), plus woodland walks in Catherington Lith Nature Reserve and Forest of Bere, reachable within a 15-minute drive. Then there’s the seaside: pebbly Southsea Beach (35 minutes) is a top spot to sample fish and chips (or an ice cream) as you gaze across the water at the Isle of Wight. The site has basic toilets and showers, plus a washing-up area with cold water and a communal fridge-freezer. The nearest shop is a half-mile away (five minutes, or 10 minutes on foot) or, for more choice, you can head into Waterlooville (10 minutes), which also has a handful of pubs and restaurants.

Em va agradar The campsite field was nice and small and had lovely scenery
The facilities were clean. There was a lovely atmosphere and it was great to see the families getting together and cooking in the communal spaces
If it rained there was a large open barn to sit in and for the children to play.
You were welcome to use the pizza oven and gas hob and fridge and freezer too.
Great campsite. We bought some lovely organic food from the shop which was delicious.

Em va agradar Loved the peace and quiet so close to Portsmouth. The site has basic but clean facilities and the shower was fabulous. Had a lovely relaxing weekend break.

No em va agradar Nothing about the site itself but sadly I am a magnet for insects and got bitten - my fault for not preparing.

Em va agradar Quiet location on a farm, lovely scenery, fantastic facilities - large barn with tables and chairs, wash-up area, open barn with cooking facilities and a fridge, toilets and shower (these were very spacious with a bench for putting your things on). My car wouldn't start when I was due to leave (probably due to the heat) and Rosie who was cleaning the chalets helped me jump start it - she saved my day and I'm very grateful to her.

No em va agradar The camping field was quite small but I was alone so didn't need space for games like I do when I'm with the children. It was the most I've ever paid for a campsite (but also the best I've stayed at).

Em va agradar Quiet rural campsite with everything you need!
We only stayed one night (Sunday) and we were the only ones there.
Toilets/shower and wash facilities are exactly as you’d expect for a farm/campsite, functioning accessible and clean.
We stayed onsite and never ventured off but we knew there is a village a short walk away.
Will definitely return for another relaxed and chilled out stay.
We didn’t see any of the staff/owners but we didn’t need to. We had all we need with us and the toilets were cleaned and replenished.
No WiFi (obviously) but we had full mobile 5G signal at all times.

Residents at Marwell Zoo (25 minutes’ drive) include snow leopards, pygmy hippos, Humboldt penguins and other vulnerable species. The Tropical House, which recreates a rainforest habitat, is home to free-flying birds from Brazil, East Africa and the Indian Ocean. When visiting Portsmouth Historic Dockyard (25 minutes), don’t miss Nelson’s ‘HMS Victory’, which took part in the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar, and the sail-like Spinnaker Tower, with a glass walk and far-reaching views across the harbour, the city and the Isle of Wight. A museum displays the wreckage of the ‘Mary Rose’, said to have been Henry VIII’s favourite ship, which was raised from the seabed in 1982. Collections at National Trust - Hinton Ampner (half an hour) range from 18th-century Italian paintings and period furniture to delicate ceramic figurines and plates. In addition to elegant gardens with sharply manicured topiary, there are acres of parkland with views across the South Downs.
