General

  • Woodland hammock camping in the New Forest
  • Sleep in the open air on a 10-acre woodland site
  • Half an hour from both Southampton and Portsmouth

Wild camping with a difference is very much the order of the day at Jacobs Copse in the New Forest: guests sleep on sheltered hammocks under the trees for open-air snoozing on a 10-acre woodland site.

Jacobs Copse is a small hammock site, hand-built as a private getaway to give all the benefits of wild hammock camping with extra comforts. You're absolutely assured privacy here, as whether you book all hammocks or just one, you'll get the whole 10 acres of woodland to yourself so you won’t be sharing with other groups.

The price includes a hammock and tarp as well as access to the site amenities: a firepit with a firelighting kit (bring your own firewood or buy on site); bench seating; a composting toilet and an eco solar shower which provides constant water flow for five to seven minutes). A 20-litre dry storage bag is also provided for each person.

The site is on the eastern side of the New Forest, half an hour's drive from Southampton to the east and Portsmouth to the south. It's surrounded by farmland, with access to the open forest just over a mile away at Woodlands. Also within a mile are a local shop and two pubs, both serving food and local ales.

Children can often be accommodated in tents by the hammocks if necessary: ask about this using the contact details in your booking confirmation email (please note you need to bring and set up your own tent).

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The hammock area cannot be accessed by car and is around a 200-metre walk from the parking area. The owners provide a trolley so guests can transport supplies.

The site has no running water: please bring your own. A 25-litre container of water is included in the pitch price.

The firelighting kit has a gas lighter and firelighters. Firewood is available to buy for £5 per basket (cash only).

The setup is great - Marc and Graham have clearly taken a lot of care with the site. Compost loo (complete with reading material and night light) is clean and tidy. Solar shower is luxurious. Firepit and benches are well done. Most importantly, the camping hammocks were comfy, with thermarests already inserted.

Admin was easy and Graham was always quick to respond to any questions by email.

    Disliked:

Worth being aware that the site is within sight and hearing of the A336. Not a deal-breaker by any stretch, but it was a presence.

We Really enjoyed our stay at Jacobs Copse. To our delight we were welcomed by 2 large packets of marsh mellows, a map with local attractions and plenty of water to see us through our stay.

The Hammocks provided were really high quality and it was a pleasant surprise to find air mattresses in the hammocks a welcomed extra touch that we were not expecting.

The whole experience was a real pleasure. You can tell the owns really take pride in what they do. I would highly recommend Jacobs Copse and look forward to returning.

    Thank you Jacobs Copse!

We found the site not to be as secluded as we imagined. But the great service and extra touches more than made up for it.

We had a fantastic stay at Jacobs Copse (Owl camp). The owners could not have been more helpful or accomodating. The camp included 6 hammocks hung in a circle to mature oaks around a central fire pit, was a fantastic evening sitting round the fire on benches provided. Facilities were good including a solar shower in a private shower area, a new composting toilet and had fire wood and water available. Had great fun toasting marsh mallows over the fire. The hammocks were great fun, stable, comfortable and was fantastic sleeping in the fresh air. We had rain overnight but the matching tarps over the hammocks kept us nice and dry and was great being all dry cosy hearing the rain falling around you.

Overall a great stay and would recommend this site to anyone.
