  • Woodland hammock camping in the New Forest
  • Sleep in the open air on a 10-acre woodland site
  • Half an hour from both Southampton and Portsmouth
Wild camping with a difference is very much the order of the day at Jacobs Copse in the New Forest: guests sleep on sheltered hammocks under the trees for open-air snoozing on a 10-acre woodland site. Jacobs Copse is a small hammock site, hand-built as a private getaway to give all the benefits of wild hammock camping with extra comforts. You're absolutely assured privacy here, as whether you book all hammocks or just one, you'll get the whole 10 acres of woodland to yourself so you won’t be sharing with other groups. The price includes a hammock and tarp as well as access to the site amenities: a firepit with a firelighting kit (bring your own firewood or buy on site); bench seating; a composting toilet and an eco solar shower which provides constant water flow for five to seven minutes). A 20-litre dry storage bag is also provided for each person. The site is on the eastern side of the New Forest, half an hour's drive from Southampton to the east and Portsmouth to the south. It's surrounded by farmland, with access to the open forest just over a mile away at Woodlands. Also within a mile are a local shop and two pubs, both serving food and local ales. Children can often be accommodated in tents by the hammocks if necessary: ask about this using the contact details in your booking confirmation email (please note you need to bring and set up your own tent).

Local attractions

The spectacular New Forest has enough to see and do to keep you happily occupied for weeks: start off at the New Forest Centre 10 minutes' drive for info on what to see and do as well as a nicely rounded mix of events and exhibitions. A museum is at the centre too. Also within 10 minutes is the New Forest Wildlife Park, home to native and once-native species of Britain including Scottish wildcats, owls, foxes and voles. More wildlife spotting can be sorted 20 minutes away at Moors Valley Country Park just over the border in Dorset, along with bike rides, waymarked walks, a golf course and the Moors Valley Railway. Two particularly famed New Forest attractions are within 20 minutes, the maritime museum (and river cruises) of Buckler's Hard, and the National Motor Museum, abbey and gardens of Beaulieu: 20 minutes. Venturing slightly further, make for the beach at Lepe Country Park in Exbury, half an hour's drive away.
