Spacious grass pitches

  • Family-friendly back to basics camping in the northern New Forest
  • In central Hampshire, half an hour's drive from Winchester/Salisbury
  • Peaceful pitches on the edge of a woodland with direct access to walks
For a full-on nature fix, head to the Hampshire countryside and settle down among the trees, ferns and free-roaming ponies at Ocknell Caravan and Camping Site. This peaceful site is in the north of the New Forest National Park and it’s a fabulous spot for unwinding amid gorgeous greenery. The site's simple pitches are entirely surrounded by heath and woodlands, with direct access to walking trails that crisscross the countryside in all directions. You won't be staying on a perfectly maintained lawn (rock pegs are strongly recommended for tents), but this proximity to nature and wildlife will be a big plus for couples, families and friends looking for a back to basics getaway in stunning surroundings. To make sure the impact on nature is minimal, facilities at Ocknell Caravan and Camping Site are limited – toilets are available, but there are no showers. Purpose-built barbecues (but not disposable ones or firepits) are allowed, but you'll need to keep them raised off the forest floor and don't light them anywhere other than on site to protect the forest landscape. The site is a couple of miles' drive from the peaceful village of Fritham, home to an independent pub and plenty of options for walking and cycling. For independent shops and cafés, head into the New Forest’s unofficial ‘capital’ Lyndhurst (20 minutes’ drive), or for a supermarket haul head to Ringwood (15 minutes along the A31).

What customers say

This is a peaceful, spacious campsite in a beautiful New Forest location, ideal for nature lovers and walkers. Visitors consistently praise the friendly and helpful staff, the clean toilet facilities, and the unique experience of wildlife, including horses and donkeys, roaming freely. Pitches are generally large and offer plenty of choice. Downsides include occasional traffic noise from the nearby A31 and the lack of showers, though this is noted as manageable for short stays. Some mention the ground can be stony, recommending rock pegs.

Liked staff were amazing and so friendly.
Camp was really nice and loads of nice places to pitch up.

Disliked Only factor was the no showers but apart from that it was great. Also the site is fairly far from most shops.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely location in the new forest with some great walks nearby. Visited by donkeys moving through as well as a beautiful stag that went through the area and was feeding near our camp. Toilets and washing up facilities great.

Disliked Not having marked pitches does make it hard to work out where you can pitch and does also encourage people to take up a lot of room making for less pitches. We did take a while to find somewhere we could squeeze in also trying to stick to the 6 metre between campers rule.
