The Old Airfield Campsite: Pitches on the grass

General

  • Wild-style site set over 30 scenic acres in the New Forest
  • A five-minute drive from Bransgore or Burley; Bournemouth 30 minutes
  • Wide open spaces with spectacular views over heath and woodland

Been feeling a bit cooped up? For breaks with plenty of space and fresh air, touch down at The Old Airfield Campsite for wild-style New Forest breaks. Located in the south of the New Forest National Park, The Old Airfield Campsite is a convenient five-minute drive from Bransgore and Burley, both of which have village amenities including pubs, post offices and handy local shops.

England's south coast is also within easy reach, with gorgeous Mudeford beach and Highcliffe Castle both within a 10-minute drive. For bigger day outs, there's also Bournemouth (30 minutes) or Poole (35 minutes), a gateway to the gorgeous Jurassic Coast.

The Old Airfield Campsite’s setting is rather special in itself, set over 30 acres of well-drained forest land, with views over beech and oak trees. New Forest ponies and their foals will be keeping an eye on you from the surrounding heathland. But things weren't always this peaceful – during the 1940s, the site was used as an RAF airstrip, regularly sending out reconnaissance missions to continental Europe. Now the skies above the New Forest are full only of birds and nature has well and truly reclaimed the land…

Handily, this laidback spot has walking trails that are accessible as soon as you step outside the site gates, plus some of the New Forest's most popular cycle tracks just a few minutes' pedal away.

Please note

This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Single-sex bookings of 8 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 6 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Very friendly hosts, the site was spacious and you can chose your own pitch, we opted for a more secluded spot in one of the wooded areas. The showers were clean and hot. The portaloos were cleaned and emptied regularly. The beer tent and food vans were fantastic, personal favourite was the mango and berry cocktail and the jacket potato with haggis!

    Disliked:

Not so keen on the eco loos, a bit drafty! But portaloos were also available

New venture for the team there from what I understand but they got it spot on. The layout was good never feeling over crowded. The facilities despite being essentially an air field were great. The temporary shower block was clean and showers were hot, they had both compost toilets and portaloos which were fine and ice cream van, bar van and a place to order basic dinner as well if required.
We were in a self sufficient camper van but many tent owners rented a fire pit for warmth creating a cosy atmosphere.
Location was great, 15 mins from Lyndhurst, the campsite backed on to heathland with horses and cows.
Great scenery, beautiful big skies as the ground was quite open and very comfortable stay for our trip away.

    Disliked:

No dislikes really, possibly not the cheapest but as indicated in the likes section, often you get what you pay for and I’d definitely come back.

Absolutely everything there really wasn’t anything we didnt dislike. My children cried when we were leaving so we booked an extra couple of nights to please them (not that we adults complained haha) there was so much to do around the surrounding area that we will be back next year to do those things we wanted to do but just didn’t have time to do. Thank you so so much for an amazing memory making holiday and we look forward to seeing you next year.

Local attractions

If you’re here to let your hair down and get active, you won’t be short on opportunities. Showing off (or sharpening up) your skiing and snowboarding skills at the Snowtrax Alpine Activity Centre (15 minutes’ drive), perhaps? Kitesurfing, windsurfing or wakeboarding from Poole Harbour (35 minutes)? Tackling the climbing wall or zipwire on Bournemouth Pier (30 minutes)?

For slightly more peaceful activities, Highcliffe Castle (10 minutes) has a beach and tea rooms. Barton on Sea Golf Course (15 minutes) is there for the golfing keen beans. Otherwise, you might want to wander around the harbour in Mudeford (10 minutes), Christchurch Priory (10 minutes) or the National Trust’s Kingston Lacy (30 minutes).

Paultons Park (30 minutes) is a theme park that will surely pick up the pace again – many of the rides are Peppa Pig themed, which might be a hit with the kids. If it’s watersports, zorbing and inflatable aqua parks they like, you’ll also hit the jackpot with a visit to the Lymington Sea Water Swimming Baths (25 minutes).
