General

  • Traditional site on a scenic working farm
  • On the South Downs Way close to the South Downs National Park
  • Close to local cafés, pubs and a farm shop

Old style stays in a wildlife haven and walkers' paradise are what's on excellent offer at Holden Farm Camping, a traditional site on a working farm in Hampshire run for generations by the Corbett family.

This peaceful place is at the western side of the South Downs National Park, 160 square miles of landscape running through Hampshire and onto West and East Sussex. The farm is also on the South Downs National Trail, the 100-mile path from Winchester to Eastbourne, passing Arundel, Petersfield and the sands and cliffs of Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters.

Pitches are wherever you like on the huge wild camping field right in the middle of the farm, where you'll be able to blaze up a barbecue in the evening and listen to the owls at night. Guests are welcome to explore around them and meet/greet the sheep, cows and horses during the day: just please remember to stick to boundaries and close all gates as this is a working farm.

Holden Farm opened in 2016 and has toilets, a shower, a washing-up area and a guest fridge.

For supplies, a general store, post office and two pubs (one with award-winning beer) is within walking distance at the village of Cheriton, and several local cafés, pubs and a farm shop are close by.

Low tech camping, lots of space, great location, good clean functional facilities.

    Disliked:

Wash block just opened need a a few tweaks - mirror above each wash basin, small shelf or extra hooks by basins would help too.

Peaceful, plenty of space. The new facilities are excellent and kept very clean.
Although I didn't use them ,there are firepits dotted around the site for an evening
round the fire.Rebecca is very helpful and was always on hand if you had any
problems. A proper camp site for people who want a nice quiet getaway.
I enjoyed my stay very much and would certainly go again.

The views were lovely and it was a nice welcoming farm

    Disliked:

I was expecting some general traffic noise after reading other reviews but hadn't quite realised how many motorbikes we would hear going flat out late at night. Rather close to a very fast road. TI also thought that £25 for 1 night for a field and 1 toilet in April was a little overpriced

From the manager...

Thank you for the review. Hope to see you again for a night in a field!

Great welcome when we arrived, very friendly. Loved the relaxed feel to the place, never like camping when so many rules and feel like your being watched all the time. Field was large and only a few tents, plenty of space and did not feel on top of anyone. Perfect location with lots of scenic walks and good pubs. Clean facilities and like the fridge, freezer and kettle.

    Disliked:

Only one toilet, with no lock. But I know this is changing this year and in no way did it take away from the fact was a great weekend.

From the manager...

Thank you for the review. We are so pleased you enjoyed the site. See you again soon we hope. X

This place is wonderful. Quiet, clean and set in a lovely location.
There was no one at the office when we arrived, so we went ahead and chose a quiet corner spot for our tent on a huge field, gave the owners (super friendly) a call and they came to meet us to show us the facilities. Where we pitched our tent we had trees behind us and the rest of the field in front of us, with horses and sheep in the distance.
The toilet block is a few minutes walk away, it's simple but very clean and there was both soap and toilet paper.
The campsite was quiet, apart from some distant road noise but to be honest wherever you stay in the south east you'll have some road noise or plane noise or both, and it was distant enough not to bother us. It is quiet at night, all you can hear is owls and other birds and wildlife.
We drove to the nearby village of Cheriton which is minutes away, lots of lovely thatched cottages, perfect if you enjoy taking photos. We also went to Alresford which is well worth a visit. Great sign posted walks and lovely cottages and pubs.

Well that has cheered up a Wednesday evening! What a fabulous honest review. We know we cannot get too big as a campsite as listening to owls at night is such a truly wonderful experience.
Thank you very much for writing - thrilled you had such a lovely time. We look forward to seeing you again in 2017 for another season of camping highs.

So much space, but then we did almost have the place to ourselves, so we weren't too worried about our teenagers chatting until late into the night.

    Very welcoming hosts.
    Loads of walks possible.
Totally flexible arrival and departure times.
The facilities were exactly as we had expected having read previous reviews.
They were most acceptable, but as said, we weren't queuing to use them !!
Next years improved facilities will only improve the site.

We would urge the owners to encourage campfires, responsible campers required !!!
and suggest if possible a rope swing somewhere from the bigger trees.

    Disliked:

The ground had lots of thistles, tough for kids and adults in flip flops !!
However, this is in hand, so no problem for next year

From the manager...

To you all - thank you for being so much fun - great to take part in an impromptu water fight. I much look forward to showing you the new updates next year.

Local attractions

Holden Farm Camping is on the South Downs Way, on its 100-mile route from Hampshire's Winchester to Eastbourne in East Sussex. Its local stretch runs from the farm to Winchester via Chilcomb and Cheesefoot Head, home of three bowl barrows and also a Site of Special Scientific Interest (crop circles crop up occasionally at Cheesefoot Head too, so keep an eye out if you're passing).

Seven miles from the farm is the market town of Alresford, reachable by foot if you fancy a hike. As well as shops and tearooms, it has the National Plant Collection of Snowdrops in its Brandy Mount House, and the handsome and half-timbered Fulling Mill, just out of town along the river path. Alresford is also the terminus for the ten-mile vintage railway Watercress Line, along to the valley town of Alton.

Other fave local spots of the Holden Farm crew include Marwell Zoo, Avington Park, the National Trust stately home of Hinton Ampner and the Jane Austen Literary Walk, a four and a half mile route from Chawton where she lived for the eight years before her death.

Also have a day in Hampshire capital Winchester, to see its cathedral, city museum and the Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium.
