General

  • Traditional site on a scenic working farm
  • On the South Downs Way close to the South Downs National Park
  • Close to local cafés, pubs and a farm shop

Old style stays in a wildlife haven and walkers' paradise are what's on excellent offer at Holden Farm Camping... a traditional site on a working farm in Hampshire run for generations by the Corbett family.

This peaceful place is at the western side of the South Downs National Park, 160 square miles of landscape running through Hampshire and onto West and East Sussex. The farm is also on the South Downs National Trail, the 100-mile path from Winchester to Eastbourne, passing Arundel, Petersfield and the sands and cliffs of Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters.

Pitches are wherever you like on the huge wild camping field right in the middle of the farm, where you'll be able to blaze up a barbecue in the evening and listen to the owls at night. Guests are welcome to explore around them and meet/greet the sheep, cows and horses during the day: just please remember to stick to boundaries and close all gates as this is a working farm.

For supplies, a general store, post office and two pubs (one with award-winning beer) is within walking distance at the village of Cheriton, and several local cafés, pubs and a farm shop are close by.

Holden Farm opened in 2016 and has toilets, a shower, a washing-up area and a guest fridge.

Excellent site with very good facilities 06/29/2019

We thought it was a great, friendly campsite with clean, well thought out facilities, and the chance to hire a fire pit if you like sitting by a real fire. We brought our own frontier stove to cook on which burns logs and they were happy for us to use it. The camping field was very big with plenty of room for a pitch and with lovely views of the surrounding countryside (and with lots of close up views of the resident barn owl that flew around near our tent every evening). Good showers, toilets and washing up facilities with a fridge, ice machine, kettle, washing up liquid and sponges, and sockets to charge mobile phones etc. Recycling facilities available and the office sold eggs, ice creams, drinks and bags of logs for fire pit users. Lots of information about the surrounding area and good position on the South Downs Way so lots of walkers/cyclists stopping off en-route. There were a number of walks to pubs in nearby villages from the campsite. We really enjoyed our stay and were relieved to have booked such a good site.

    Disliked:

The showers and toilets were unisex so may not be ideal for everyone (although we had no problems with this at all). The site is in a beautiful spot, not adjacent to any roads, but you should be aware that there is a little noise from the nearby main road which is a number of fields away. This was not a particular problem though.

From the manager...

Thank you for writing us such a comprehensive review. Great that you enjoyed yourselves and hope to see you again.

Everything. Absolutely wonderful site and staff. Right on the South Downs Way with lovely views. Facilities were spotless. Field is huge and has good fire pits and decent wood available to buy. The facilities are the at bottom before you go into the camping field which is great because you get a feeling and peace of back-to-nature camping but with everything families need including hot water, Wi-Fi, fridge, freezer and phone charging. I especially liked the board to educate about recycling and the zero-waste products available in the tuck shop including cereal and milk. Playing water splats (reusable water bombs) was so much fun that we bought some to take home. The staff could not be more helpful or attentive and had great advice on pubs, local walks, activities etc. and they even arranged for my four year old to sit in a real tractor which was the highlight of his holiday.

    Disliked:

Nothing. The site is not far from the A272 but the sound of birds chirping is far more noticeable than any road noise and we even saw an owl which was wonderful. The dark sky in the South Downs is beautiful too.

From the manager...

Local attractions

Holden Farm Camping is on the South Downs Way, on its 100-mile route from Winchester to Eastbourne. Its local stretch runs from the farm to Winchester via Chilcomb and Cheesefoot Head, home of three bowl barrows and also a Site of Special Scientific Interest (crop circles crop up occasionally at Cheesefoot Head too, so keep an eye out if you're passing).

Seven miles from the farm is the market town of Alresford, reachable by foot if you fancy a hike. As well as shops and tearooms, it has the National Plant Collection of Snowdrops in its Brandy Mount House, and the handsome and half-timbered Fulling Mill, just out of town along the river path. Alresford is also the terminus for the 10-mile vintage railway Watercress Line, along to the valley town of Alton.

Other fave local spots of the Holden Farm crew include Marwell Zoo, Avington Park, the National Trust stately home of Hinton Ampner and the Jane Austen Literary Walk, a four and a half mile route from Chawton where she lived for the eight years before her death.

Also have a day in Hampshire capital Winchester, to see its cathedral, city museum and the Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium.
