  • Farm site with a petting zoo 15 minutes’ drive from Bishop’s Stortford
  • A 30-minute drive to IWM Duxford, and 40 minutes to Colchester Zoo
  • Off-grid camping with a playground and animal encounters on site
How about a family camping break at a petting zoo? Sounds like heaven for animal-loving kids… so if you've got some of those in your tribe it sounds like you should be heading for Daisy Mays Farm, 15 minutes’ drive from Bishop’s Stortford, where you can greet and feed the animals. It’s a breeze to get here from London or Cambridge, with direct train services to the stations at Stansted (five minutes’ drive) and an efficient road network. Stays include the use of all the farm’s attractions – both during and outside of public opening times – which include a secure play area, a woodland for den building and an adventure playground with swings, sandpits and a games pitch in addition to the petting farm. Large woodland and grass pitches overlook the sheep paddocks, and there’s ample parking, drinking water, a chemical toilet and ice-pack freezing. Please note there are no electric hookups at this site. There is, however, a handy coffee cabin open for hot drinks all week, with hot food, ice creams and slushes also available 10am-4pm at weekends and during school holidays. Dogs are allowed on leads at the campsite and in the paddocks only, not the play areas or animal fields. As the site is off grid, it's a good idea to bring a torch to find the toilets at night. It is a farm so the ground may be muddy – and please note that there are no heated facilities blocks; the showers freeze in cold temperatures, so they are not available during low season.

Non-electric gravel and hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Great place for the kids to explore. Staff very welcoming and explained the rules of the site on arrival. Kids can wander the animals and fed the lambs. Peaceful nights sleep

Disliked: The camper van area was very tight. No more that 15m x 15m. Sola light for the toilet broken so need a torch even during the day. Grandson disappointed as we were advised to go to the farm at 9am to pick his own eggs. Got there on time but no one around to help out.

Non-electric gravel and hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: This place is lovely if your main aim is to spend the time at the farm with kids. The scenery was beautiful with lots to keep the children entertained. The place was well maintained and looked after. There were nice areas for the children to explore while staying. We also liked the free roaming sheep who came to visit during our stay.

Disliked: I think it’s really important to be aware that if you are camping on the hard ground with camper vans/motor homes, you are pitched on a car park in the middle of the farm, and there is absolutely no privacy between you and those customers visiting the farm. We didn’t realise as we arrived after closing on a Friday, however when 11am rolled around we quite literally felt like part of the attraction with lots of families slowly walking past staring at us in between the pigs and the sheep, then walking through our pitch to exit the public walkway. We were not prepared for this and we felt very vulnerable with our privacy invaded. We felt misled with the description, and If we would have been made aware of the set up we would not have booked here. To not feel safe and comfortable on your pitch in our opinion is not worth the cost of the entrance to the farm. I have tried to be as fair as possible with this review, as it really is a lovely place to visit, just misleading in the advertisement for accommodating motorhomes.

From the manager: Thanks for taking the time to write us a review. We are glad you enjoyed the farm but are sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the camping area. We feel that is important to mention that this weekend when you visited, there was a weather warning in place for very high winds and rain. This made accessing many of our normal pitches impossible. We did cancel several of our bookings because of this but left yours (and your friends in the other 2 motorhomes) as confirmed, as we received messages from you all upon booking, stating that you all wanted to pitch next to each other. Therefore we did not think that being in a small space would cause a problem to the group. We are sorry that you were not happy with the area that we provided. However, during the winter we are only able to use areas of hardstanding for motorhomes, as accessing the grass pitches is not possible. As soon as the weather improves, the full site will once again be open, so that people can enjoy more space and tranquillity. Kind Regards The Daisy May’s Team

Liked: Just me and my nephew - staff were really lovely. Opened the field for me, checked up on me and stopped to chat. Field great, campfire under the stars listening to the sheep. Free entry to the petting section to feed the goats and sheep.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: We had a great stay at Daisy Mays. We camped by the trees opposite a sheep field in February. It was very muddy following a very wet few weeks, but that didn't stop us having a good time. A lovely area with a ground fire pit which we used each night to keep warm. The kids especially liked seeing all the animals and holding baby goats in the petting area. I think for the price it was ideal for a few days get away. The first 2 days we were the only people camping which I think definitely helped with the camping experience! There was a viking adventure golf 5 minutes walk from the site which we played and a nearby national trust park which we walked out dog at. Lovely location and family friendly.

Disliked: There was quite a bit of rubbish around the camping area (drinks cans, metal pegs, muddy socks, old air pump, batteries on the fire pit) all which we tidied up before pitching our tent. During the second night some people arrived late when we were sleeping and pitched a tent in the dark (making noise and using torches outside our tent) this woke us and the kids which wasn't ideal. Between them and the other 2 campervans that arrived after dark, I feel the arrival time wasn't adhered by.

Non-electric gravel and hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: It’s a working farm with a nice variety of animals. The people were friendly and our child was able to milk a goat. It was a very relaxed atmosphere. Nice walks around the village. Pubs just 5 min away, a Tesco and chippy just 10 min walk.

Disliked: Being out of season we felt a little that we were not supposed to be there and a little run down. And was very muddy. But to be expected being January with a lot of rain recently.

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: Everything is disgusting and filthy, the worse camping site I have ever seen in my life.

From the manager: Osman, our campsite is open all year round as often in the winter we have hikers wanting to stay, or campers hopping from site to site. We are a farm and in the winter it is certainly not picturesque and there is plenty of mud. As an open farm our campsite includes family entry to the farm and I can see how you maybe don’t think that you got great value for money, as a single person. However, this is all stated in our listing, along with the fact that all of our pitches are grass. To anybody that wishes to camp in the winter months, please fully read the description. You are more than welcome but please come prepared. It’s camping at its bleakest! Many Thanks The Daisy May’s Team

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Had a fantastic time yesterday, best camp site ever! Being around the free roaming goats/sheep was fantastic. Bottle feeding baby goats, holding chicks, lovely coffee, lovely food. Plenty of room for everyone, honestly was a great stay.

Disliked: The noisy family up being loud until 11pm, obviously not the farms fault. The family that had their car running for HOURS was pretty annoying too! Again not the farms fault, just selfish people.

Local attractions

If your kids are demanding yet more animal encounters, spend the day admiring the big cats, penguins and rare red pandas at Paradise Wildlife Park (45 minutes’ drive), where there’s also a dinosaur-themed woodland trail. Alternatively, head for Colchester Zoo (50 minutes) to spend time shadowing the keepers. Once you prise the kids away from the wildlife, let them loose on the adventure golf at Golf World Stansted (five minutes) while you practise your swing on the driving range or play a round on the nine-hole parkland course. Still outdoors, take forest walks through centuries-old trees at National Trust - Hatfield Forest (15 minutes), or have a stroll around ornamental ponds at The Gardens of Easton Lodge (20 minutes), with a layout dating from the Tudor era. There’s more local heritage to be discovered at Mountfitchet Castle and Norman Village (five minutes), where you can tour a reconstructed medieval farming settlement and castle. Keen to learn more about World War II? Have a meander around the extensive collection of fighter planes at IWM Duxford (half an hour).
