  • Family-run eco-friendly site on the banks of the Thames
  • A mile from East Tilbury village; 40 minutes' drive to Southend-on-Sea
  • Next to a nature park and on the Thames Estuary Path
Views of the Thames? Yes, very much so – Essex site Thamesview Camping is right on the banks of the mighty river, looking out over Coal House Fort in one direction and the Essex Wildlife Trust Thameside Nature Discovery Park. A mere hour’s journey from London (by car or public transport – the rail station is a 15-minute walk away), this is a prime spot for those seeking an easy escape from the capital, or guests hoping to mix up a city break with some rural fresh air. Waterside footpaths, cycle routes, birdwatching and fishing are all popular activities here, as is simply looking out over the water to see what you can see (there’s a colony of seals out there, and you may also spot Benny the Beluga swimming about…) As this family-run space is primarily focused on the area’s natural attractions, it’s no surprise that the team have set it up to be as eco-friendly and peaceful as possible. No loud music is allowed here, and guests are encouraged to be mindful of the environment and each other, keeping dogs under control and following the countryside mantra of ‘leave no trace’. A local wildlife guide is on hand if you want to get to know your surroundings a little better. Campfires are welcome too (or essential, some might say) and the folk on site can help out by selling you locally sourced firewood with virtually no carbon footprint. Other supplies for campfire cookery can be picked up a mile away in East Tilbury (or you could skip the cooking and head to the local pub, 10 minutes’ walk away, instead…)

What customers say

This eco-friendly campsite offers spacious, well-separated pitches, each with a fire pit and picnic bench, set within a natural, peaceful environment. Guests appreciated the proximity to walks along the Thames, wildlife, and nearby amenities. Facilities, including composting toilets and showers, were generally found to be clean and well-maintained, with some noting the eco-conscious approach. Occasional concerns were raised regarding noise from other campers and inconsistent shower temperatures. Despite minor issues, many visitors expressed a desire to return.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Location is great for a day away from London. I love the fact of being able to do the fire, everyone respectful and very quiet. You have a nice walking path. I thought I could be able to swim but there is not facilities for it. The showers are hot and nice.

Disliked Even if it is a dry toilet I will suggest the possibility to change the bag at least two times per day, otherwise you can see and smell the sheet of everyone in the camping 😅 would be nice to have access to water, even if it cold to wash your hands after using the toilet.

From the manager: AFTER HAVING THE TOILETS VANDALISED TWICE IN TWO DAYS. The toilets were changed more than twice a day over the bank holiday weekend. Unfortunately this weekend attracts campers that did not have our usual calibre of respect for other guests.

Because of rats definitely I’m not coming back.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Fireplace was nice.

Disliked I’m very surprised why people rate this pitch up so high.
What actually put me off and nobody ever mentioned there were RATS on a site!!! Rats were by showers and sink. I still cannot believe rats jump to the area where the dishes are washed, so unhygienic place. I did not take any pictures as obviously I was not carrying my phone on me at all the time.
I was not aware of horses being that close to the pitch up, therefore smell was not too nice for me.
Toilets were acceptable, cleaned on a daily basis.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Not much, maybe an idea to be eco campsite

Disliked Awful customer service. Man who's worked there was very unpleasant and intimidated people on campsite trying to blame everyone for some things happened before we actually arrived. Absolutely ridiculous behaviour. It's not the right way you should contact and speak to people on site.

We decided to speak to every pitch to let them know that if we do find out who caused such a mess we would have to ask them to leave. You was not the only one spoke to. The majority of the site was glad we did.

Pretty standard! Basics covered, good amount of space.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Good size of pitch! Managed a lot of kit with plenty of room left over! Fire pit was nice but the location within the pitch differed per pitch. Surrounding fields are nice too

Disliked Name of the site is misleading, more of a field view than the Thames. Eco friendly composting toilets could use some more regular cleaning/emptying (they are cleaned once a day but could maybe do with a deep clean) as well as the shower cubicles. One sink for washing up which caused some queues in the morning

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Camping is always fun. Horses nearby were very friendly. Wood logs to purchase onsite was useful.

Disliked Very populated site. The toilets were the worst I’ve ever experienced - composting loos emptied once a day - with so many guests it was a horrid experience going to the loo and by early evening the smell was putrid enough to stink by our tents.
Passcode padlocks were temperamental.

Non-electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked Nothing

Disliked I have never been to a campsite so ugly, unpleasant, with pylons as the view and a derelict car junk yard to welcome us in. It was so ugly, unclean and unwelcoming I had to leave without staying. Dont stay here. Please dont let the website fool you

Non-electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked A peaceful site, with an Environment friendly ethos. Compost toilets spread out across the site, washing up facility and showers.
Easy to book and self check in.

Disliked Not a negative comment but we didn’t realise we wouldn’t be allocated a pitch. It was a turn up and find a pitch scenario and as we arrived later afternoon therefore we couldn’t easily find an available pitch but regardless we found somewhere on the end and was quite happy.

Non-electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked Nice mown circular pitches with allows each person their own space, separated by longer grass. Good security too with locks on the gates so no passersby wandering through. Hot water for washing up.

Disliked Compositing toilets ran out of toilet roll and didn't feel well looked after. Didn't see anyone visit them all day Saturday despite the site being packed.
Lots of people allowing kids to scream and run about well into the night. 11.30pm it finally got quiet (curfew for noise here is 11pm but most campsites suggest 10pm, so i think the later curfew encourages the noise running late into the evening).

Local attractions

Start local by exploring the Thameside Nature Discovery Park, next to the site – footpaths and bike trails crisscross the 120-acre site with lots of wildlife to spot in this Site of Special Scientific Interest. Alternatively, give your legs a really good stretch with a walk on the 27-mile Thames Estuary Path, which runs alongside the site. Stop by at the Coalhouse Fort (15 minutes’ walk) for a touch of glamour – it’s regularly used as a film location (perhaps most famously for Batman Begins). The Thames opens out into the sea, of course – and not that far away, either. Set off for a seaside day with outings to Canvey Island (25 minutes’ drive) or Southend-on-Sea (40 minutes). Both have indoor attractions too, which is handy for less clement days – Canvey Island Transport Museum and Southend’s Sea Life Adventure are good picks for such times.
