  • Family-run eco-friendly site on the banks of the Thames
  • A mile from East Tilbury village; 40 minutes' drive to Southend-on-Sea
  • Next to a nature park and on the Thames Estuary Path
Views of the Thames? Yes, very much so – Essex site Thamesview Camping is right on the banks of the mighty river, looking out over Coal House Fort in one direction and the Essex Wildlife Trust Thameside Nature Discovery Park. A mere hour’s journey from London (by car or public transport – the rail station is a 15-minute walk away), this is a prime spot for those seeking an easy escape from the capital, or guests hoping to mix up a city break with some rural fresh air. Waterside footpaths, cycle routes, birdwatching and fishing are all popular activities here, as is simply looking out over the water to see what you can see (there’s a colony of seals out there, and you may also spot Benny the Beluga swimming about…) As this family-run space is primarily focused on the area’s natural attractions, it’s no surprise that the team have set it up to be as eco-friendly and peaceful as possible. No loud music is allowed here, and guests are encouraged to be mindful of the environment and each other, keeping dogs under control and following the countryside mantra of ‘leave no trace’. A local wildlife guide is on hand if you want to get to know your surroundings a little better. Campfires are welcome too (or essential, some might say) and the folk on site can help out by selling you locally sourced firewood with virtually no carbon footprint. Other supplies for campfire cookery can be picked up a mile away in East Tilbury (or you could skip the cooking and head to the local pub, 10 minutes’ walk away, instead…)

Disliked Turned up to our booking for our first camping trip with our baby and they claimed they did not have our booking even though we saw our details in their phone while they were tweeting to over explain what went wrong to us.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked A very peaceful and pleasant stay - owners are genuine, decent people. Love the fact there's no music or parties allowed and you can enjoy the sounds of nature and nearby livestock.

Disliked Rules are rules for a reason, it's upsetting that some people can't respect the owner's rules - such as one car per pitch, one tent, no large groups etc - the ignorance of some people is stifling.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely campsite, close to the Thames and lovely 5 hours round trip walk we had to Stanford le hope.

Can imagine it would be beautiful when we are not in a drought.
Certainly want to come back and it's handy knowing it is there- perfect for visiting London.

We caught a fantastic view point for the storm Friday evening over in Kent and didn't get wet in the process!

Disliked Nothing that can be changed by the site owners. We had our own toilet in our tent which I would recommend if you don't like spiders unfortunately the sheds that the toilets are in are full of very large spiders but you're in nature so its part of the package.

Liked Great authentic camping with fantastic views.
Had a thoroughly enjoyable 3-night stay at Thames View Camping. The scenery was even better than expected, and the campsite was kept clean and well cared for every day. The facilities were in good order and well-suited for a proper camping trip. Fellow campers were polite and respectful of personal space throughout.
If you are looking for genuine camping rather than a luxury resort, this site delivers exactly what it promises. I would gladly recommend it and return in the future.

Liked I really liked this site the facilities were good it’s in a nice secluded spot with a few nice walks nearby and a decent pub for lunch! Not that the site can control the weather but it was very hot so top tip is to take a awning or gazebo as shade is very limited

Local attractions

Start local by exploring the Thameside Nature Discovery Park, next to the site – footpaths and bike trails crisscross the 120-acre site with lots of wildlife to spot in this Site of Special Scientific Interest. Alternatively, give your legs a really good stretch with a walk on the 27-mile Thames Estuary Path, which runs alongside the site. Stop by at the Coalhouse Fort (15 minutes’ walk) for a touch of glamour – it’s regularly used as a film location (perhaps most famously for Batman Begins). The Thames opens out into the sea, of course – and not that far away, either. Set off for a seaside day with outings to Canvey Island (25 minutes’ drive) or Southend-on-Sea (40 minutes). Both have indoor attractions too, which is handy for less clement days – Canvey Island Transport Museum and Southend’s Sea Life Adventure are good picks for such times.
