  • Family-run eco-friendly site on the banks of the Thames
  • A mile from East Tilbury village; 40 minutes' drive to Southend-on-Sea
  • Next to a nature park and on the Thames Estuary Path
Views of the Thames? Yes, very much so – Essex site Thamesview Camping is right on the banks of the mighty river, looking out over Coal House Fort in one direction and the Essex Wildlife Trust Thameside Nature Discovery Park. A mere hour’s journey from London (by car or public transport – the rail station is a 15-minute walk away), this is a prime spot for those seeking an easy escape from the capital, or guests hoping to mix up a city break with some rural fresh air. Waterside footpaths, cycle routes, birdwatching and fishing are all popular activities here, as is simply looking out over the water to see what you can see (there’s a colony of seals out there, and you may also spot Benny the Beluga swimming about…) As this family-run space is primarily focused on the area’s natural attractions, it’s no surprise that the team have set it up to be as eco-friendly and peaceful as possible. No loud music is allowed here, and guests are encouraged to be mindful of the environment and each other, keeping dogs under control and following the countryside mantra of ‘leave no trace’. A local wildlife guide is on hand if you want to get to know your surroundings a little better. Campfires are welcome too (or essential, some might say) and the folk on site can help out by selling you locally sourced firewood with virtually no carbon footprint. Other supplies for campfire cookery can be picked up a mile away in East Tilbury (or you could skip the cooking and head to the local pub, 10 minutes’ walk away, instead…)

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Wild campsite, nicely mown paths, long grass, natural relaxed feel, wood available to buy (though we didn't need it), lots of toilets available in the field, close to the Coalhouse Fort which we enjoyed (along with watching the remote controlled boat races and visiting the cafe there for some tasty lunch with grandparents and kids)

Disliked: Couldn't get the shower to a higher temp than tepid (which was actually fine for me as a cold water swimmer!) and it was 9/9.30am so possibly at the end of peak time for a hot shower :p

Non-electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Loved the unique pitches! The site is arranged so that each pitch feels private - the grass has been mown so that the natural grasses and plants between form boundaries. We made use of the picnic table and enjoyed marshmallows around the fire pit. Great feeling of freedom and getting close to nature - lovely walks along the river wall seeing geese and other birds. Would love to return.

Disliked: Nothing! It was a great site. There were mosquitoes (but you are camping near to the river!) so remember to bring repellent if mosquitoes bother you.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: I loved this campsite, the kids and I had a lovely peaceful break away. I loved that pitches were cut out of the grass so you didn't have to fear someone pitching on top of you, they are a great size with firepit and bench on. All the amenities were good and had lovely warm showers in this off grid site. Thank you for a great stay, we'll Def be coming back!

Disliked: Nothing 😀

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Des emplacements spacieux et très agréables dans un cadre charmant.

Disliked: Des infrastructures beaucoup trop modeste. Des toilettes en nombre mais pas nettoyés et donc très sale. Des douche peu nombreuses et très contraignantes d’utilisation par ailleurs pas propres. L’accueil sur site inexistant ; un mail récapitulatif et personne sur place a qui parler.

Non-electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: A basic but fantastic site. Music-free so truly appreciated the serene surroundings. There are some great walks from the site, along to the fort and also on the coast through a nature reserve area towards tilbury docks. Facilities are basic but very well kept. Ideal for those looking for a quiet relaxing location

Local attractions

Start local by exploring the Thameside Nature Discovery Park, next to the site – footpaths and bike trails crisscross the 120-acre site with lots of wildlife to spot in this Site of Special Scientific Interest. Alternatively, give your legs a really good stretch with a walk on the 27-mile Thames Estuary Path, which runs alongside the site. Stop by at the Coalhouse Fort (15 minutes’ walk) for a touch of glamour – it’s regularly used as a film location (perhaps most famously for Batman Begins). The Thames opens out into the sea, of course – and not that far away, either. Set off for a seaside day with outings to Canvey Island (25 minutes’ drive) or Southend-on-Sea (40 minutes). Both have indoor attractions too, which is handy for less clement days – Canvey Island Transport Museum and Southend’s Sea Life Adventure are good picks for such times.
