  • Family-run eco-friendly site on the banks of the Thames
  • A mile from East Tilbury village; 40 minutes' drive to Southend-on-Sea
  • Next to a nature park and on the Thames Estuary Path
Views of the Thames? Yes, very much so – Essex site Thamesview Camping is right on the banks of the mighty river, looking out over Coal House Fort in one direction and the Essex Wildlife Trust Thameside Nature Discovery Park. A mere hour’s journey from London (by car or public transport – the rail station is a 15-minute walk away), this is a prime spot for those seeking an easy escape from the capital, or guests hoping to mix up a city break with some rural fresh air. Waterside footpaths, cycle routes, birdwatching and fishing are all popular activities here, as is simply looking out over the water to see what you can see (there’s a colony of seals out there, and you may also spot Benny the Beluga swimming about…) As this family-run space is primarily focused on the area’s natural attractions, it’s no surprise that the team have set it up to be as eco-friendly and peaceful as possible. No loud music is allowed here, and guests are encouraged to be mindful of the environment and each other, keeping dogs under control and following the countryside mantra of ‘leave no trace’. A local wildlife guide is on hand if you want to get to know your surroundings a little better. Campfires are welcome too (or essential, some might say) and the folk on site can help out by selling you locally sourced firewood with virtually no carbon footprint. Other supplies for campfire cookery can be picked up a mile away in East Tilbury (or you could skip the cooking and head to the local pub, 10 minutes’ walk away, instead…)

What customers say

This eco-friendly campsite offers spacious, private pitches with fire pits and benches, set in a peaceful, natural environment by the Thames. Guests praise the hot showers, clean facilities, and convenient location with nearby walks and amenities. While some noted occasional noise from other campers and issues with composting toilet maintenance, the site is generally well-regarded for its simplicity, sustainability ethos, and excellent value. Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Pitches were spacious., toilets were clean and well managed. Beautiful nature, birds, ducks, bees there. Would have been better if there's a play ground for kids. Our kids enjoyed. Fellow campers were friendly too.

Disliked Nothing really.

Liked Lots of space and each pitch has their own fire pit and picnic table and for compost toilets, they were very clean and well kept.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Here’s a polished version that keeps your tone but flows a bit more smoothly:

We loved the location of this site. We stayed for two nights and made the most of the beautiful surrounding nature and nearby historic sites. There’s plenty of space between pitches, so you’re not on top of other campers, which we really appreciated.

We didn’t need any assistance during our stay, but it was reassuring to see staff around during the day, along with a contact number if needed.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return.

Disliked The only downside for us was the compost toilets. We completely appreciate the eco-friendly approach, but we would have personally preferred flushing toilets. That said, they were clean whenever we used them, just a little on the smelly side.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The site is far enough from buildings to visually look like the countryside, although the surrounding working farms and road traffic is very audible. The grass and roads on site are well maintained. I camped in February, it was very wet, and yet the grass pitch was nog soggy or muddy. A walk along the sea wall is well advised.

Disliked I did not have a problem with shower availability as there weren't many people. But I can imagine with a lot of people on site the showers might get busy. The warm water was fine, but at some point went scalding hot. The tap is outside the stall, which meant reaching around to manage the water. I wouldn't let children shower without adult supervision - that water could have injured someone.

From the manager: Hi Stefan,
The showers are fitted with thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) or pressure-balanced valves, prevent burns by regulating temperature or shutting down flow if water exceeds safe levels 41d. We will have them rechecked but this the first complaint we have had about too hot. We do turn them up a bit in winter due to people complaining they were luke warm. There is no water adjustment available to the users to prevent anyone turning up the heat.
Thanks for your feedback. All the best

Non-electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked Enjoyed the eco side of things, well organised and set up. Nice peaceful spot with horses in next door field.

The pub is about a 20 min walk but is excellent. Really good food.

Disliked There was no Thames view which I was disappointed by, it would be quite a long walk from the campsite to see any water.

You have to book online as there are no staff onsite. I was a female travelling alone in Feb so the site was very quiet and isolated. Luckily another woman was staying the same night, otherwise I think I would have felt a little unsafe, as it was only other single men on site. Im sure in the summer when its busier it would feel a lot different.

When I arrived at the campsite I couldnt get through the locked gates, I was having problems using the online booking system and was hoping I could pay on arrival. I called the number but the man was very curt and unwelcoming when I was trying to explain, it wasnt a great start.

There arent pitches for the motorhomes, its a gravelled shared carpark.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Paula,
The back gate on the campsite ls 10 meters from the sea wall flood protection.
You can access the Thames either side of that.
You cannot view the Thames from the pitch part of the campsite due to the flood defence but it is clear to see and view from the entrance gates of the campsite.
As I explained to you at the time we are on the other side of the road from the campsite and available 24hrs a day if needed.
You cannot pay on arrival to ensure we know the identity of all guests. We do not take walk ons and the site is only bookable via Pitchup or our website.
Thanks for your feedback, All the best.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked This is my second visit and once again it definitely delivered. Large open space, peaceful and right on the banks of the Thames. Within easy reach of a pub, supermarket and historic coalhouse fort , which has a great little dog friendly cafe. The site has all the facilities you need and as it is open all year round will become one of my regular sites. You are also left in peace and the site is very secure. My visits here also appear on my YouTube channel and tictok as . youcanadventure2

Local attractions

Start local by exploring the Thameside Nature Discovery Park, next to the site – footpaths and bike trails crisscross the 120-acre site with lots of wildlife to spot in this Site of Special Scientific Interest. Alternatively, give your legs a really good stretch with a walk on the 27-mile Thames Estuary Path, which runs alongside the site. Stop by at the Coalhouse Fort (15 minutes’ walk) for a touch of glamour – it’s regularly used as a film location (perhaps most famously for Batman Begins). The Thames opens out into the sea, of course – and not that far away, either. Set off for a seaside day with outings to Canvey Island (25 minutes’ drive) or Southend-on-Sea (40 minutes). Both have indoor attractions too, which is handy for less clement days – Canvey Island Transport Museum and Southend’s Sea Life Adventure are good picks for such times.
