  • Wild camping on a small organic farm on Essex’s Dengie Peninsula
  • Saltmarsh Coast and Bradwelll beach half an hour’s walk away
  • Bike hire available on site and barbecue provided
When it comes to quiet sites, Peace Place Pilgrim Bivouac is up there with the best of them. Sitting on the outskirts of Bradwell-on-Sea village, on Essex's Dengie Peninsula, the site was established with one key purpose: providing a place of spiritual rest to those keen to leave the stress of modern life behind for a while. If that sounds like you, read on for what awaits here. You’ll be wild camping on an organic three-acre farm run by Ted and Elizabeth, who acquired it in 2014. Vegetable plots and fruit trees are combined with hay and wildflower meadows to form a varied landscape that allows nature its full expression. A barbecue is provided (for provisions, there’s a community shop in Bradwell-on-Sea), and amenities for guests include a washing-up area and a composting toilet, plus charging and recycling points. However, please note that while some hot water is available from an urn between 8 and 10am and then again between 8 and 10pm, there is no hot running water on site. Once you’re all set up and settled into your accommodation, you can explore the surrounding area. If you choose to walk due east, you can reach St Peters Chapel (a stone structure dating from the seventh century) within 20 minutes, and Bradwell beach (popular for dog walks) on the Saltmarsh Coast in about half an hour.

Liked: Loved the chickens that roam the site, and the friendly goats. Our 2 year old couldn't get enough of them! We loved the kind and helpful owners Elizabeth and Ted and their friendly dogs. We loved the peace and tranquility of the place. And the sunsets! We loved that you can leave your car at the site, and walk to the village, to the sea, to St Peter's Chapel through paths and quiet little roads. We had a wonderful break there.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (solo)

Liked: I have just spent 4 nights at Peace Place and loved it. As a woman travelling alone I felt safe and grounded. It is not a place to stay if you like new and plush as amenities are built from upcycled materials and basic but practical. If you want a place to sit, gather yourself and tread lightly on the planet and immerse yourself in birdsong this is the place for you. Especially good for alternative thinkers.

Liked: Ted and Elizabeth were fantastic hosts. The campsite is basic but very welcoming and a great place to camp. Very quiet and with the added bonus of some chicken and goats wandering around. The beach is only a 20 min walk away too. 100% recommend.

Liked: The owner was lovely and we so enjoyed our stay. The little beach was beautiful and the site was stunning with all the wildflowers. Thank you so much Ted! The hot water and wash area was a really nice touch and we loved seeing the chickens and goats as well. We will definitely be back!

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (solo)

Liked: Ted and Elizabeth were wonderful hosts who made me feel very welcome. Their site is a perfect example of wild camping in an environment that is being returned to the natural world, I even had a lizard playing around my tent. The only sounds you hear are the calling of birds, and I took some time to sit and watch their animals as they enjoyed the warm day. I had a fantastic stay and would highly recommend it to any one that is trying to reconnect with nature or just have some good old peace and quiet

Liked: Wonderful wild camp feel. With only a small number of pitches, the site is extremely peaceful and a conscious effort has been made to keep the area untouched and natural. I loved being welcomed by the hens and two friendly dogs as we got set up, with sheep and goats to say hello to too. Great place to escape the city life for a night. We enjoyed some of the local vineyards and took a stroll along the local coastline.

Local attractions

Spreading between the estuaries of the River Blackwater and the River Crouch is Dengie National Nature Reserve (five minutes’ drive). This expansive area of tidal flats and saltmarshes is a birdwatcher’s dream, with large numbers of Brent geese and grey plovers, plus turnstones and oystercatchers. For a vintage day out, take a trip on a steam or diesel train along the heritage Mangapps Railway (25 minutes). In addition to just under a mile of standard-gauge track with restored stations and period equipment, there is a museum with an extensive signalling collection – it should keep trainspotters happy for a few hours. Bradwell beach (half an hour's walk) is a splendid place for a picnic on the sand or a walk along the nature trail. At the other side of the peninsula, Burnham-on-Crouch (20 minutes' drive) is a quiet riverside town with an art trail, a museum and some lovely places to eat and drink by the water. You may also like to stop by at Clayhill Vineyard, a little way outside the town, for a tour, a tasting or a bite to eat.
