  • Spacious, well-appointed yurt in a fenced meadow near Dunmow
  • Colchester Zoo and Hylands House within a half-hour drive
  • Rare-breed animals to meet; firepit, hammock and football goal
Want to wake up in the morning, open your doors and greet resident rare-breed pigs, chickens and a peacock? It’s a memorable way to start the day… and it’s all here at The Rare Breed Yurt, in the Essex countryside a couple of miles from Dunmow. And the yurt itself is pretty fab too – it’s a spacious setup with a superking bed and single bed permanently in place (a double floor mattress and travel cot can also be added if needed, so just ask). There’s an electrical supply at the yurt, which powers the kettle, microwave, toaster, refrigerated cooler and cute festoon lighting. A multifuel stove is also in place to take the edge off any chilly evenings. Outside the yurt, you can cook your dinner on the barbecue or have a go with the custom smoker, then shift over to a spot by the firepit to do your marshmallows as the stars come out overhead. A picnic bench, hammock and football goal are also set up outside (something for kids, something for parents… how handy) and the whole thing is within a fenced meadow so it’s a safe space for kids and dogs to scamper about in. Amenities are provided in the form of a drinking water tap and a composting loo with handwashing facilities, but please note there’s no shower at the site. Although it’s in its own space, the yurt is close to two family residences so you’re asked to be respectful and keep noise to a minimum after 9pm. Bring bikes along for outings on the nearby Flitch Way, or rods and reels if you’d like to buy a day of fishing at the site’s pond. The nearest pub is a mile away, and there are more places to eat or buy supplies in Dunmow.
