General

  • Just over an hour's drive from London and 20 minutes from Colchester
  • A 10-minute drive from the coast at Clacton and Frinton-on-Sea
  • Within easy walking distance of the local village's pubs and takeaways

Don’t get too engrossed in your book on the train if you’re farming yourself and family out to this Essex coast campsite from London: you’ll be there in a jiffy.

An hour and 15 minutes from Liverpool Street lands you at Thorpe-le-Soken, a minuscule quarter of a mile along a rural footpath to the acreage at Grange Farm Campsite. Arriving from elsewhere? The farm is at the end of the A133 from Colchester 20 minutes away by car, although personally you might like to get someone else to drive so you can get on with your holiday reading…

Although it’s within 10 minutes’ drive from the coast at Clacton, Frinton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze, the vibe at popular Grange Farm is pretty peaceful, set deep in Essex countryside with room galore for pitches. Horse riding is a canterable mile away; and tennis courts, a golf course and a heated indoor pool four miles away – just in case you don’t fancy braving Essex sea waters before summer.

Walkies from Thorpe-le-Soken through the rural surroundings include ones to the coast, to Landermere, to Beaumont Quay, to Holland Haven Country Park, to the village fish and chip shop… Speaking of fish and chips (always), a chippy, takeaways, three restaurants, three pubs, a petrol station and a food shop are in the village; all three pubs dish up nosh.

Facilities on site – showers, toilets and chemical disposal point – are basic but kept very clean. There’s no laundry block, but a launderette is three miles away.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Group bookings of 5 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Set on a farm with fields of crop and horses near by. Took us back to the country side. Quite, peaceful, well kept green area, facilities a stone's through away. All basic but clean and tidy, exactly what we were looking for. Cannot beat on price. John (very worm and welcoming), came to our rescue when we forgot our bits for tent at home. A 15 min drive to Frinton, Walton or Clacton. 7 min walk to town for groceries.

Very friendly staff. Nice peaceful site. Very well kept site. Although the toilets were adequate, we were assured by the new management that development of the site was ongoing & there was to be a new toilet/shower block. Am looking forward to seeing that when we visit again.

Lovely camp site - not too large. Although the facilities were limited everything was spotlessly clean and well organised
Friendly helpful owner and warden, on hand to check that everything was fine, especially after a night of torrential rain.
The site is in walking distance of the village with pubs serving food, a tescos and cash machine open until 11pm. The bus service goes to Harwich and Clacton for £5 return.
The railway station is about 15 minutes walk across the fields and has a good service to London Liverpool Street.
Judging by the number of returning families, this site is one that they return to regularly.

Local attractions

Birdwatching and beaches, seaside towns, coastal constitutions and the city of Colchester are all close to hand from Grange Farm Campsite – if you should tire of these (tsk), Orford and the Suffolk Heritage Coast await a little further north.

The sands of Holland-on-Sea four miles from the farm are quieter than the main Essex seaside towns of Clacton-on-Sea, Frinton-on-Sea and Southend-on-Sea: like most of the surrounding countryside, this is birdwatching land to have twitchers all of a-flutter.

Holland Haven Country Park between Clacton and Frinton covers over 100 acres of coastal birdwatching landscape to spy migrant birds, sandpipers, warblers and the like; elsewhere, several nature reserves include Great Holland Pits, Soken Woods, The Naze at Walton-on-the-Naze, Howlands Marsh at St Osyth and the RSPB Stour Estuary reserve at Wrabness.

Seaside transport of a different kind is available at the Southend Cliff Railway – yep, going upwards – and the hair-raising adventures and rollercoaster rides of Adventure Island, with free entry and a Jumping Jolly Rodgers ride. Aaarrr.
