Spread across a spacious setting in the Essex countryside, Barleylands is a fab farm campsite with plenty of room for families to relax (along with their dogs if they're coming along for a country break). The flat grass fields at this working farm have basic facilities including hot showers and well-maintained toilet blocks and are a few hundred yards from a popular farm park where there are all sorts of animals, shops and food options to explore. Guests staying the night at Barleylands also qualify for a special stay-and-play discount, making it even easier to access its walk-through aviary, tractor rides, bird of prey displays and indoor and outdoor playgrounds. (The park is particularly recommended for kids between the ages of three and 10.) Also close by is the Barleylands’ craft village (open from Tuesday to Sunday), where there are over 30 different studios to explore. And, as it's surrounded by open countryside, Barleylands has great access to local footpaths and rights of way. Other outdoor leisure options in the area include a golf course and an equestrian centre, both of which are under a mile away. Barleylands is also easily accessible by public transport: regular local bus services stop opposite the park and can take you into either Billericay (journey time 15 minutes) or Basildon (20 minutes), where there are shops, cinemas, leisure centres and mainline railway stations. Please note that this is a working farm so there may be some noise from farm machinery at times.

Liked Quite spacious area, reasonably quiet during the night.
Not too expensive.

Disliked No reception (at least none we would have found).
No staff anywhere to be seen. Electricity didn’t work (was not a problem, we could use someone else’s, but still it would be nice to know that you can actually use what you paid for).
Toilet/shower block was never cleaned during our one-night stay.
Rubbish bins were overflowing.
Chlorinated water.
Almost nowhere to walk the dogs.
Surrounding area(s) covered in rubbish and debris.

Liked Liked football golf course and crazy golf course,toilets and showers clean and tidy plenty of space on pitches

Disliked Not much to do so you have to bring your own entertainment could do with some sort of security on site at all times as had some trouble with some teenagers throwing stones at people

Liked The area was great, good size pitches and super easier with gate and toilet codes provided before arrival
Water was hot and showers were clean

Disliked Not enough toilets. 4 female toilets for 80 odd pitches, they were cleaned regularly but were times inbetween when they weren't great. Cutting down to one toilet at the top and 2 at the other end of the field

Liked This campsite is lovely. It’s clean, well organised and the grounds are well maintained. Lot’s of additional activities to partake in at extra costs if you’re not planning on going far.
Train into central London readily available from a reasonable distance & cost.
Would absolutely stay again 👍🏻

Liked Clean and spacious pitches. Lovely clean toilet and shower blocks. Information all sent by email which was handy as we were late arriving. Level pitches.

Disliked Complicated codes for toilets. The fact there were codes anyway meant even our eldest child couldn’t go to the toilet on his own.
There wasn’t very much going on and some of the staff working there were rude.
WiFi intermittent so not worth relying on.
A playground on site would have been nice.
CCTV on the pitches was a little strange given very little physical presence of staff on the campsite.

Local attractions

Bounce down to Basildon (10 minutes’ drive), where the town centre has cinemas, a shopping centre and plenty of restaurants and pubs where you can spend evenings away from base. For more urban explores, you’ll be about an hour by car or train from central London, making Barleylands a top option for weekends away from the capital or a mix of rural and city days out. Getting to the seaside is also easily arranged here, as Barleylands is 20 minutes from Thorney Bay beach, a family-friendly spot on Canvey Island with great views over the Thames Estuary. Southend (30 minutes) is also an option for traditional days by the beach, with amusements and a pier to sweeten the deal. For more things to do, take the family off to Adventure Island theme park (30 minutes), Diggerland Kent (40 minutes) or, for quieter times, try stately homes like Hylands House (25 minutes) and Boreham House (25 minutes), both of which have a range of gardens and pretty parklands to explore.
