  • Rural farm in 300 acres of East Sussex countryside, with nature pond
  • A 10-minute drive from Battle; 20 minutes from Hastings
  • Fishing pond on site; half a mile from a café, post office and pub
Yet to stay on a farm in the East Sussex countryside? There’s a first time for everything, and Netherfield Place Farm Camping is one excellent place to do it, for sure. Surrounded by the lush countryside of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and with great westerly views for extra-special sunsets – this quiet campsite is conveniently located on the edge of the village of Netherfield, an easy half-mile walk from its café, pub and post office. With such a rural East Sussex setting, there’s limited phone reception here. That makes it just the place for a bit of a break from screen time. For alternative entertainment, the site has a nature pond where you're likely to spot ducks and the occasional visiting heron, while the surrounding fields are home to birds of prey, deer, rabbits and other wild creatures. The site is flat and well-maintained with plenty of space, ensuring a good level of privacy and plenty of room for all your camping kit. Netherfield Place Farm Camping is located at the end of an unmade road, meaning there’s minimal traffic noise. Ultra-low light pollution is another perk of staying here, boding well for outdoor activities like family stargazing or romantic evenings by the campfire. For such nights, firepits are available to rent and logs are sold on site. Feel free to bring your own selection of campfire snacks or pick them up once you're here at the site's handy mobile tuck shop. Netherfield Place Farm Camping is also home to a well-stocked fishing pond, where you’re welcome to cast your line for small roach and rudd. All ages are welcome, just bring your line along and have a go (please follow the on-site rules and any instructions from site staff).

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Absolute gem of a campsite. A lovely big field in the middle of the countryside. A perfect place for a quiet getaway. Pitch where ever you like, need good set of levels if like us you're in a van but otherwise no problem. A huge field surrounded by countryside, so peaceful and tranquil. Love the eco aspects, outdoor showers/ compost and free fire pits. It seems that Dan and Grace have addressed most issues on previous reviews and we saw Dan daily. Sketchy phone signal and WiFi but nice to switch off for a couple of days. Yes the track down to field is long and bumpy, just take it slow are careful. Great footpath walk from farm to village for pub shop and cafe. Great little fishing/nature pond to set and listen to nature. Nice and dark in the evenings so great for stargazing. A couple of groups of teenagers where there when we were and they were very well behaved and respected the site rules. If you want to pitch up and get away from everything and just chill out or enjoy nature, you'll love this site

Disliked: Might have been a good idea to open another toilet as by out 2nd day there were around 25 people using just the 2. A bit of a wait and was a bit full by the end, but otherwise all was great

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Quiet and rural location, feels like you are miles from anywhere. Field has a bevel in the middle and flat around the edges, bordered by hedgerows and woodland which offers a nice dawn and dusk chorus from the birds. Well mown. Only minimal road noise in the background. Spacious and quiet with room for families to play; was only one other group when I stayed way across the other side, so it was peaceful. Back to basics and no phone reception for an off-grid.

Disliked: No communication with owner - tried calling and messaging to inform him of a last minute booking - confirmation says to check in with 'reception', but what reception? There is no signage other than pointing out the camping field. I walked to the farm houses but it was not clear who was the field owner, so I didn't want to go knocking on doors. Some form of greeting or check from the campsite owner would have been nice, or signage of where to report to (if you need to), I could have just walked in and pitched without paying. Guess it is done on honesty policy! As others have said, the access track is broken down to the binder course layer, not just rough or gravelly - recommend crawling along slowly and certainly not suitable for lowered or prized cars! I had a quick cold shower as the guide said 'press start button' - what start button? - but not to worry. Brought my own loo roll as compost toilet had none, but it did have sawdust and hand sanitiser (no lights in the shed)

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The campsite itself was spacious, with plenty of room for children to play and not disturb anyone else. It’s very quiet and felt like you were in the middle of nowhere. Facility’s were clean although the shed for the toilets was a little small height wise. There is some lovely walks to enjoy around the campsite, plenty of exploring available for children. Didn’t see any staff, but then didn’t need anything so not an issue, they do supply a mobile number to contact them though.

Disliked: The road to the campsite is extremely rough and single track. Take it slow, anything low is going to ground out. The recommended pub for food (the white hart) only serves food from 6pm. We found a pub called The Royal Oak about a 10min drive away, food was great, staff were brilliant and there’s okay equipment in the garden for children so I’d say go there.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: What a lovely big field and fantastic little forest to walk in as well. A beautifully green little spot, and not crowded at all. The toilets seemed very eco-friendly and functional as well as being clean. The shower looked like fun but I have my own, so I didn't use them. I went during the school holidays and was surprised to find it so quiet- I'd recommend this for people who are looking for a quiet spot- There were a couple of large family groups with kids, but the place is big enough that it remained very peaceful.

Disliked: The signage makes it a tiny bit tricky, but not that difficult. Look for handpainted 'camping' signs.

Liked: Great rural setting and spacious field. Composting toilets were well maintained and clean, and the outdoor shower was warm and very enjoyable

Disliked: The track/road to the field is quite long and a bit bumpy - not ideal if you have a car with low clearance

Liked: Peace and quiet. Great views. Felt quieter then it was due to the curveture of the land. Relaxed vibe. Road track in really added to the adventure and remote feel of the site. Will definitely visit again.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Liked the simplicity of the site - large fields a long way from the farm with basic good services - open air hot shower, clean compost style toilets, washing up sink with cold water. Friendly farmer who adjusted the thermostat when requested. Lovely views and sunsets which I shared only with my dog and the sheep in the next field. Good value. Liked the rough road in as it would probably deter RVs, low slung cars and nervous drivers but I think some of the bigger chasms could be reduced a bit! So not for everyone but I would return.

Disliked: Pub described as being half a mile away - in fact there were two pubs ; one closed 0.9 miles away by road and the other 1.1 miles away

Local attractions

Whether you’re rusty around the edges or a self-proclaimed golfing pro, this may be the time to sharpen up your skills at Battle Golf Club (five minutes' drive)… or opt for a smaller-sized version at Hastings Adventure Golf (30 minutes). If you do stop by Hastings (25 minutes), be sure to check out Hastings Castle and the Smugglers Adventure (30 minutes). The caves there were once used by smugglers on the south coast. Other historic places include Bodiam Castle (20 minutes), a grand 14th-century fortress with gorgeous grounds and spiral staircases, or Battle Abbey (10 minutes), next to the 1066 battlefield. As for some relaxing days out, Camber Sands (40 minutes) is a great place to unwind, unless you decide to take up the windsurfing or kitesurfing. Picking up the pace is easy again at Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest (20 minutes), which has walking trails and Go Ape, or the Drusillas Park (35 minutes) zoo.
