  • Scenic and peaceful adults-only fishery site in the High Weald
  • A 20-minute drive from Tunbridge Wells and 30 minutes from Lewes
  • Fishing lakes, wild swimming and nature paths on site
Angling for a peaceful holiday without kids underfoot? Ramble along to Hastingford Fishery, an adults-only shepherd's hut site set in a scenic lakeside setting less than five minutes’ drive from the East Sussex village of Hadlow Down and 20 minutes from Royal Tunbridge Wells. This site should suit fishing fans down to the ground. It’s got several fishing lakes to choose from, so settle down on the banks with rod in hand and while away a few hours (or days) in quiet contemplation, waiting for something to bite. But please note, the site asks anyone fishing to only use barbless hooks, and for fish to be returned to the lake quickly after being caught. Not the fishing type? All sorts are welcome here and there’s plenty to entertain in a leisurely fashion: paths wind around the lakes and (as this is the High Weald) through the countryside, there are spectacular views towards the South Downs National Park from the top lake. A spring-fed lake is on site too to cool off in with some wild swimming. When it comes to time for eats, pick up supplies from the supermarkets in Uckfield, Heathfield or Crowborough or take a drive to Buxted for some posh pub food (it'll take about 10 minutes to drive to any of these).

Roach shepherd's hut

Liked: We stayed in the Roach Shepards hut, which was over looking the lake. It was spotlessly clean. The owners Geraldine and Mark were very welcoming and friendly. We thought the welcome pack - warm croissants, bread, eggs, juice and milk was great. It was so tranquil sitting on the deck watching the wildlife. We will definitely return as I didn't want to leave.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike at all.

Carp shepherd's hut

Liked: Had a fantastic 5 night stay in the Carp Hut! The hut and private shower room, small walk away, were immaculate; as was the flushable portaloo next to the hut for those caught short moments. The hut is very well kitted out and cosy; I slept really well and I'm 6ft 2"! I had no issue's with WiFi, mobile (EE) connection, and TV reception that were good for all my requirement's. Everyone at the fishery is absolutely lovely and couldn't have been any more helpful! Arriving by bicycle, with plan's to circumnavigate the area with rides planned each day that were thwarted by the very strong winds and bad weather, staff helped by providing a lift to get provisions and picking up essentials (chocolate) later in my stay, as the road's were deemed a little unsafe to cycle! Despite this, the grounds of the fishery provided for a really peaceful stay. The wildlife is amazing, from speaking with the duck's, visit's to the bird feeder from the Woodpecker's and Tit's, and stunning aerial displays's from the Kingfisher's to mention a few! This place is a gem and I wouldn't hesitate to book; especially for the cyclist's out there. It's a great base for jumping onto numerous route's in the area. But beware there are some hill's and you'll have to put the mile's in! I will definitely consider staying again to tackle those hill's! Lastly, thank you so much again for your hospitality Geraldine, Mark, Hilda and Trish; and a big woof to Jade!!!

Disliked: Cafetière/coffee press not big enough for my unhealthy addiction!!!

Liked: Everything is as described. The carp hut was soooo cosy and warm and the whole location is very peaceful. You don't hear any vehicles - at all! We received a basket of warm rolls and croissant on arrival which was a nice touch and all the hosts were really helpful and accommodating.

Roach shepherd's hut

Liked: I stayed here for three nights for a spot of fishing. I was warmly welcomed by the hosts along with hot bread & croissants. Peter was the perfect host and knowledgeable on the fishing of the lakes which are full of various species. Very peaceful & plenty of wildlife to watch whilst casting a line. Accommodation was exceptional, very clean and all the things you could possibly need along with extras of milk, juice and eggs. Toilets/showers also clean and well maintained. I'll be back with my partner and the Top Lake will be my destination next time around. Thanks for making my stay peaceful and enjoyable and the Sausages went down a treat, thank you.

Disliked: Nothing

Carp shepherd's hut

Liked: We had a wonderful three night stay in the Perch Shepherds Hut . The hut is beautifully appointed and immaculately clean as is the whole site. The sun had is hat on for the entire stay allowing us to enjoy the views over the lake and beyond. We enjoyed a touch of fishing on the well stocked lake and relaxing in the peace and quiet of the surroundings. Laying in bed in the morning drinking a cuppa, we watched a variety of birds including a woodpecker visit the feeder . Mark and Geraldine are extremely friendly and deservedly proud of what they have achieved. We plan to go back!

Disliked: Having to go home!

Local attractions

Active guests may want to strap on walking boots and head off on explores of the South Downs National Park, 25 minutes’ drive from base. It’s a top spot for hikes, bikes, rides and rambles, and is also an International Dark Sky Reserve for those who are keen enough on stargazing to opt for an after-dark visit. If the South Downs is too sprawling to appeal, make tracks instead for Ashdown Forest, the original Hundred Acre Wood (actually 500 acres), to wander the paths that inspired AA Milne to create Winnie the Pooh. Be sure to gather up lots of sticks along the way... one is never too old for a game of Pooh Sticks. There’s plenty of tamer nature within easy reach too, as gardens at Sheffield Park, Borde Hill, Nymans, Wakehurst and Herstmonceux Castle are all within 45 minutes of the site, and Leonardslee – with its Wallabies, dolls' house museum, afternoon tea, and wine, chocolate and cheese tastings – is under an hour away. When a more urban experience beckons, a 20-minute drive brings guests as far as Tunbridge Wells, where shopping in the Georgian Pantiles, digging around museums and taking a sip at Chalybeate Spring are highly recommended. It’s 30 minutes to visit the medieval castle, Museum of Sussex Archaeology and Anne of Cleves House in Lewes, Brighton is 25 miles away if seaside days appeal, and it’s just over an hour to London on the train from Crowborough, 10 minutes away.
