  • Peaceful eco-friendly farm site with activities
  • A 20-minute drive to Bewl Water and 45 minutes to Hastings beach
  • Foraging and fire-cooking workshops on site; a 10-minute walk to pub
Minus the sound stages, this like all the best bits of a festival. In green meadows on a working farm near Burwash in Sussex, the folks behind this soulful site welcome people who care as much about nature and peace as they do. All the wood they use, from the furniture in the chillout area to the picnic tables around the site, is reclaimed and every effort is taken to make this a low impact and sustainable spot. It’s a site on the simple side too, with compost toilets and showers in sheds. Outdoor living is the thing, so you can bring your own barbecue, borrow firepits from the site or sit for a pow-wow round the communal one; the chillout area has comfy seats and a fridge-freezer for everyone to share. You can make new friends on foraging and fire-cooking workshops... there’s no playground for the kids but why would they need one...? If you do want to emerge from this meadowland oasis, Burwash is a 10-minute walk or a two-minute drive for pubs with grub and shops. A little way outside the village (five minutes by car or half an hour on foot), Bateman’s beckons Kipling and country house fans; the fine Jacobean house Rudyard once occupied has wildflower meadows and is a hub for many walks around the surrounding countryside.

Local attractions

If you’ve got an incurable urge to go poking round other people’s houses, the three local castles should suit fine. Herstmonceaux (25 minutes’ drive) is a proper turret and moat job from the 15th century, housing an observatory with exhibitions for the stargazers; Scotney (25 minutes) is older but more of a house, while Bodiam (15 minutes) is so well-preserved you expect to see some knights clanking past. For a historical mash-up experience, Bodiam is also where you catch the Kent and East Sussex Railway for a cross-county heritage steam ride to Tenterden. If water’s your element, Bewl Water (20 minutes) is the spot for sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing, and the activity centre nearby lays on quad biking, archery and clay pigeon shooting. Heading coastwards, Hastings (40 minutes) and Brighton (an hour) have a handsome spread of beaches and piers, castles and smugglers’ caves, funicular and electric railways, toy museums and aquariums. Go from petting the starfish at Sea Life Brighton to meeting creatures on the smaller side at Drusilla’s Zoo Park (40 minutes), or loving the llamas at the llama park (where else? 45 minutes). For traditional bucket and spade beach-type stuff, Camber Sands is 50 minutes away.
