  • Peaceful bell tent site in over 800 hectares of private deer park
  • A 25-minute drive from Bewl Water; 35 minutes from Bedgebury Forest
  • Shop and café; trout fishing and clay pigeon shooting available
A warm welcome to you, the newest lucky resident at Eridge Park. As the home of the Marquess of Abergavenny and the oldest enclosed deer park in Britain (mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, no less), this is a special spot for a bell tent break. At Glamping at the Deer Park, you’ll be next in line (after the existing black deer herd) to experience the sprawling, 800-hectare estate in East Sussex. The rare black deer roam freely here, and there’s clay pigeon shooting and trout fishing available to book by way of activities. There’s a café if you fancy a sweet treat or a caffeine dose, as well as a florist. The café serves tasty homemade cakes, hot and cold drinks, breakfasts, lunches and light bites. Alternatively, head to the on-site shop to pick up fresh local produce for the barbecue. That’s all without going off site… when you’re ready to direct your attention outwards, cycling and hiking are all splendid in the rural surroundings. Hot step it to a historical National Trust or English Heritage property next or sign yourself up for outdoorsy pursuits at Bewl Water (25 minutes’ drive) or Bedgebury Forest (35 minutes). The large and luxurious bell tents are all set on a generously spacious pitch. Each one comes with one private parking space, but additional parking is available. With full use of toilet and shower facilities and washing-up facilities, you’ll have a dandy set-up on the site of the annual Black Deer Festival. Dogs aren’t permitted, due to the livestock on site.

Local attractions

Outdoorsy types, unite and arm yourself with a paddleboard or a bike. Bewl Water (25 minutes’ drive) has paddleboarding and bicycle hire, as well as places for sweet strolls and fishing trips. Bedgebury Forest (35 minutes) is just as suited to adventurous souls, with cycling and mountain biking trails and a Go Ape treetop obstacle course. Hiking is splendid at the High Rocks National Monument (10 minutes), where the rocks are millions of years old. A bit of history instead? Bodiam Castle (45 minutes) is a 14th-century abode, with some romantic features like spiral staircases and a moat. Alternatively, pretend you’re travelling in the 20th century on the Spa Valley Railway (five minutes), which has a station in Eridge. The Pantiles (10 minutes) are a series of arches hailing from the Georgian era – and that's just one of the local historical sites. Some of the closest National Trust properties include the arts and crafts home Standen House and Garden (35 minutes) and Winston Churchill’s home Chartwell (35 minutes). Hever Castle & Gardens (half an hour) has a maze, model houses, military museum, archery and boating.

Bell tent

Liked: The deers, the wood. The facilities were clean. The tent was nicely decorated. The tent is well equipped for a couple, but not really for a family of 4 (small table indoor with 2 poufs and a small table outdoor with 2 chairs). There were plenty of blankets and enough pillows but no fitted sheet for the children.

Disliked: There was no one at reception, no one to welcome you. A code is given to you to access the tent. The shop was closed. There is no equipment to warm up food (lucky we had brought coal for the bbq as the shop was… closed). A list of equipment would have been useful so we could have come prepared.

Bell tent

Liked: Really comfy tent, bed and living space. Our tent also had some essentials for cooking and cleaning to make the stay even easier. Lovely views from tent also.
