  • Privately owned chalets just across the road from Camber Sands
  • Rye and Dungeness National Nature Reserve 10 minutes’ drive
  • Passes on sale for access to pools, bingo nights and entertainment
The sandy shores of Camber are literally seconds away when you stay at Camber Sandy Shores, a family-friendly site on the grounds of a Parkdean Resorts holiday park. But don't worry about keeping those English Channel breezes at bay – all the privately owned static caravans and chalets here (sleeping at least five people) have central heating and double glazing. Those who are passionate about the sea-and-sand lifestyle should feel right at home here, with Camber’s five-mile beach at their fingertips – just cross the road and unfurl your towel. If you fancy a slightly wilder take on a sandy beach, head west, close to the River Rother, where the beach becomes a collection of sandy dunes. When the waters of the Channel are too choppy, you can take a dip in one of the five indoor pools at the holiday park. You will need to buy an entertainment pass to access the pools; however, the good news is that the pass also allows entry to the entertainment complex in the evening, with assorted acts and nightly bingo sessions. The on-site restaurant serves fish and chips, pasta dishes and curries, and there are also several dining spots and pubs within a 10-minute walk, in Camber. The nearest grocery shop is a five-minute walk away, and there are lots of independent stores – including bakeries, fishmongers and butchers – in Rye, a 10-minute drive away.

Local attractions

Climb to the top of the bell tower of the Church of Saint Mary in Rye (10 minutes’ drive) for far-reaching views of the area, then explore the town’s cobbled streets, such as Mermaid Street, lined with impeccably maintained half-timbered houses with lead windows. The Rye Heritage Centre runs interesting walks to help you learn about the history of the place. Dungeness National Nature Reserve (10 minutes) is said to be the only desert in England. The landscape is certainly desolate, but the vast shingle beach is home to several species of seabirds, moths and dragonflies. Climb the lighthouse for 360-degree views of Romney Marsh, or visit the garden at Prospect Cottage, the former home of film director Derek Jarman. Folkestone (45 minutes) is ‘an art school’ – so says a colourful mural on the train station platform. And there’s certainly plenty of art around the town (which hosts a triennial art festival) – from Tracey Emin’s moving Baby Things sculptures to large installations on the beach. You can also stroll to the end of the Harbour Arm, sampling tasty offerings from the various food stalls.
