  • Quiet and secluded working farm with a large pitching field
  • In East Sussex, two miles south of Ashburnham in the High Weald
  • Direct access to the 1066 Country Walk; well-behaved dogs welcome
This farm site in the High Weald area of East Sussex gets a big thumbs up for its green rural outlook, secluded location and well-kept amenities. Gardners Farm, a family-run site in sunny South East England, is two miles from Ashburnham and a 10-minute drive from the medieval castle at Herstmonceux. It's also set half a mile back from the nearest main road, meaning that camping here is wonderfully peaceful and comes with very low levels of background noise. There is some low-level pedestrian traffic, though, as handily this site has direct access to the 1066 Country Walk. The grounds themselves are split between a spacious grass pitching field and a half-acre woodland area, all of which are set in the laidback surroundings of a working farm. Gardners Farm's wild camping area has basic amenities including a cold water tap and a composting toilet; guests camping on the main field also have access to showers and flushing loos. Well-behaved dogs are welcome (the farm has a few of their own) and barbecues and firepits are allowed as long as they're raised off the grass. This is an out of the way spot, and lots of nature can be seen here, but for further wildlife watching you're also an easy 10-minute drive from the edge of Pevensey Levels National Nature Reserve. For trips to the coast, head 20 minutes down the road to Pevensey, or drive for a similar amount of time to the larger local town of Bexhill.

Local attractions

Bring your binoculars and wander around Pevensey Levels National Nature Reserve (10 minutes' drive) in search of local birdlife, or pack a windbreak, some sun cream and a good book and head to Pevensey beach (20 minutes) for a day of relaxing by the waves. If something more active's in order, you might like to walk the chalk cliffs around Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters (35 minutes), or you could head a little further down the coast to try paddleboarding or other watersports at gorgeous Cuckmere Haven (40 minutes). This part of the South East has castles galore, from Bodiam (20 minutes) with its imposing moat and 14th-century towers to the handsome brick buildings at Herstmonceux (20 minutes). Hastings and Battle (25 minutes) are also close if you fancy heading out on the trail of King William the Conqueror – you can walk all or some of the way there via the 1066 Country Walk that starts right outside the site gates.

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked So relaxing, even on a working farm. The family that run this place are lovely. The other people on the site are lovely too.
They send you the proper way to get to them via email. And if you get a little lost, they will answer the phone.

Disliked The sat nav sends you the wrong way.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked First time camping, two adults and two dogs. So peaceful and beautiful. Walked to the Ash Tree Inn for dinner where deer crossed our path. Saw shooting stars. You camp around a wild patch so nobody is in front of you. Clean facilities and hot shower!!

Disliked Not a dislike but when we go again we will take ear plus to block out the cockerels' early morning wake up call. 😂. A very bumpy track to the site but someone made it in a Fiat 500.

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Location was great, pitch size was good, mostly level, and we weren't crowded at all. Clean and tidy facilities with all we needed. We met the owner, who was really friendly too.

Disliked Early morning wake up from the resident cockerels, and the approach from the main road is a little precarious. We managed it in our little T6 but its a fairly long working farm track, that is rutted in places, so progress getting to and from the pitch was slow and dusty.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The location, its a charming little site on top a hill. The remoteness is great. A very peaceful place. The night sky was amazing due to no light pollution nearby. Saw shooting stars, satellites and planets easily by eye. Great shower and freezer to chill down ice blocks.

Disliked Rooster wake up call could get too much for a longer stay, but that's the joys of a farm campsite.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Gardner’s Farm is a lovely spot for a camping getaway. It’s very dog-friendly, which made our trip even more enjoyable. The toilets and shower block were clean and well-maintained, which is always a big plus when camping. There’s plenty of flat space for pitching tents, so finding a good spot was easy.

Disliked The only thing to mention was the track leading to the site, which is quite bumpy—worth keeping in mind if you’re arriving with a low car. Other than that, it’s a peaceful and welcoming place to stay.

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Plot size, ambiance and general freedom. You’re not crammed in next to each other here - it’s a great place to be. The pub (30 mins up the lane) is my new favourite. And one of the few site that are truly dog friendly and not just dog tolerant. My two loved it.

Disliked If I was being picky, the shower and toilets could be better. But it’s really not that bad.
