Gardners Farm: Pitches

General

  • Quiet and secluded working farm with a large pitching field
  • In East Sussex, two miles south of Ashburnham in the High Weald
  • Direct access to the 1066 Country Walk; well-behaved dogs welcome

This farm site in the High Weald area of East Sussex gets a big thumbs up for its green rural outlook, secluded location and well-kept amenities. Gardners Farm, a family-run site in sunny South East England, is two miles from Ashburnham and a 10-minute drive from the medieval castle at Herstmonceux. It's also set half a mile back from the nearest main road, meaning that camping here is wonderfully peaceful and comes with very low levels of background noise.

There is some low-level pedestrian traffic, though, as handily this site has direct access to the 1066 Country Walk. The grounds themselves are split between a spacious grass pitching field and a half-acre woodland area, all of which are set in the laidback surroundings of a working farm.

Gardners Farm's wild camping area has basic amenities including a cold water tap and a composting toilet; guests camping on the main field also have access to showers and flushing loos. Well-behaved dogs are welcome (the farm has a few of their own) and barbecues and firepits are allowed as long as they're raised off the grass.

This is an out of the way spot, and lots of nature can be seen here, but for further wildlife watching you're also an easy 10-minute drive from the edge of Pevensey Levels National Nature Reserve. For trips to the coast, head 20 minutes down the road to Pevensey, or drive for a similar amount of time to the larger local town of Bexhill.

We had a woodland pitch which had its own firepit. It was a quiet and peaceful which was what we like. Plenty of space, a relaxed check in, logs available for the fire.
Spent 2 nights and had a good nights sleep both times. The owner popped over and said we can leave late on the Sunday as there was no Monday booking.
The toilets were good, clean and plenty of supplies. The shower was very nice with lots of space to get undressed and dressed.
Had a nice walk from the campsite and there are lots of footpaths to explore and some pubs to find.

    Disliked:

When we went it was quite quiet with not many campers so it wasn't an issue for our stay, but there is only one shower so it could get busy.
It wouldn't put me off going again though!

Spent a weekend at this fabulous site and can't wait to come back. A chilled, peaceful, relaxed site where you can relax surrounded by nature. Great walks in the surrounding area. The pitches are spacious, providing a sense of privacy. We stayed in an electric hook-up with easy access to the facilities. The toilets, shower and wash-up area were fantastic and spotless, cleaned daily by Nikki.
Firepits and BBQ's can be hired and logs can be purchased if you don't bring your own.
All in all a great big 10/10, and I'll be back next year.

This site is a real gem. We stayed on one of 6 electric grass pitches next to the shower and toilets. The facilities are beautifully kept and clean. The pitches are well spaced out so you have a real sense of privacy. The shower is one of the best I have used on a camp site and we did not have to queue at all. Nikki and her husband are lovely, so helpful and friendly. We hired a BBQ and Firepit and purchased logs and fire lighters from Nikki, all delivered to our pitch and great value for money. The site was so quiet and peaceful, lovely to awake to birds and farm animals and go to bed under a beautiful starlit sky. A fantastic base, we went to Eastbourne, Pevensy Bay, Bexhill beaches….all clean and great for swimming. We visited Batemans, Scotney castle, Bodiam Castle and Nymans (National Trust) all within easy reach. Great food, Drinks and friendly service at The Bulls Head - highly recommended!! Did not want to go home and we We will definitely be back.

If something more active's in order, you might like to walk the chalk cliffs around Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters (35 minutes), or you could head a little further down the coast to try paddleboarding or other watersports at gorgeous Cuckmere Haven (40 minutes).

This part of the South East has castles galore, from Bodiam (20 minutes) with its imposing moat and 14th-century towers to the handsome brick buildings at Herstmonceux (20 minutes). Hastings and Battle (25 minutes) are also close if you fancy heading out on the trail of King William the Conqueror – you can walk all or some of the way there via the 1066 Country Walk that starts right outside the site gates.
