  • Bodiam Castle and Bewl Water within a half-hour drive
  • Kingsize bed, woodburner, barbecue and ensuite bathroom included
The fact that you’ll be greeted with homemade cake if you arrive at Hoots Treehouse around teatime gives you a hint that this is a special spot indeed, with a properly warm welcome from owner Lucinda. As you’ll see from the photos, the cake is only a small part of what makes this place such a memorable place to stay. At this gorgeous little retreat in the East Sussex countryside (10 minutes’ drive from Mayfield) you’ll stay right up in the trees, overlooking a pond and surrounded by trees – it’s quite the spot for a bit of peaceful wildlife watching, with owls hooting in the evenings and birdsong to start the day. The wooden deck is the place to catch all of this – it’s got garden furniture and a gas barbecue provided too, so you can certainly settle in for a comfortable evening with a few drinks and something to eat as you soak up the views and the vibe. All is very comfortable inside too, with a handcrafted kingsize bed (made up with Egyptian cotton sheets), soft rugs underfoot, a woodburner to keep things cosy and a Bluetooth Bose speaker to provide the tunes. A TV and DVD player are provided as well, along with a kitchen area that’s got a fridge, a coffee maker, a microwave and a two-ring gas hob. The luxury also extends to an ensuite shower room with a proper toilet, a heated towel rail and fluffy towels. All of this makes Hoots Treehouse a fabulous retreat for a couple, but it’s also an option for a family adventure, with space in the loft for two kids to sleep (accessed via ladder and hatch; not suitable for children under five).

Local attractions

This lovely treehouse is pretty much right in the middle of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so it’s got lots of places to get out for a good walk or bike ride nearby. The likes of Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest and Bewl Water are popular picks – and the latter has a Go Ape course if you’d like to spend more time in the treetops (both about 25 minutes’ drive away). With neighbouring Kent being ‘the Garden of England’, it’s no surprise to find several gardens to visit nearby, including Pashley Manor Gardens (15 minutes) and National Trust - Sissinghurst Castle Garden (35 minutes). If it’s more about the grand buildings for you, try outings to Bodiam Castle (half an hour) or Rudyard Kipling’s former home Bateman’s (15 minutes). Beyond those, there’s plenty more including animal encounters at Drusillas (40 minutes), beach days at Camber Sands (an hour) or a day wandering the historic streets of Rye (50 minutes).
