  • Large, family-friendly site surrounded by meadows in East Sussex
  • A 15-minute drive from Hastings and Rye
  • Firepit hire, picnic area and barbecue on site
Surrounded by open meadows and lush, green scenery, Oak Valley Camping is the sort of site where you should be able to get some proper rest and relaxation. The simple, peaceful site has spacious back-to-basics pitches in the countryside two miles from Pett Level beach. There are also walking trails through the surrounding woodland and at the nearby lakes. The family-friendly site is away from busy tourist hordes but easily accessible by car to locations like Rye and Hastings, both 15 minutes' drive away, and destinations across the High Weald National Landscape. Coastal walks are a short drive away, too. There’s loads of space at Oak Valley Camping for small sorts (and big sorts) to run around, and a picnic area with tables and a barbecue for sizzling up lunch or dinner. Can’t be faffed? Two pubs serving food are close to the site. The site amenities block has clean toilets and showers with hot water. A washing-up area is also available for guests’ use.

Guests highlight the friendly staff, convenience to local beaches and pubs, and the option to choose their own pitch. While facilities are generally clean, some visitors noted that during busy periods, the number of toilets and showers, as well as cleanliness, could be improved. Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Loved it so much last year that we chose to come back again. Location is great and quiet.

Disliked Was much busier this year with people having to camp closer together due to most of the site being hilly which took away the remoteness we enjoyed last year.
2 toilets and 2 showers per sex was not adequate for the number of people on site. Especially as one of the ladies showers was defective and one of the mens toilets was not working. Showers need to be cleaned more regularly and it is not ideal having one showers water running into the others shower to drain away.
Another warning one of the washing up sinks has the taps the wrong way round and either needs to be fixed asap or a sign out up (hot water is very hot, especially to an 8yr old who thought he had turning on the cold as the tap had a blue dot)
There were several roof top and trailer tents pitched, as well as cars driving round site past 10pm.

Local attractions

Although it’s in a secluded spot, Oak Valley Camping is close to some splendid parts of Sussex, including its coast and seaside towns. The medieval Cinque Port of Rye, with yachts at the harbour, Castle Museum, nature reserves and Rye Harbour SSSI, is within a short drive. Also, speed along to old Hastings, 15 minutes away, for its Old Town and fishing quarters, beach and arcades, Priory Meadow shopping centre, two cliff railways and the Hastings Fisherman's Museum at Rock-a-Nore. Just outside town, A Smuggler's Adventure at St Clements Caves covers the smuggling history of this part of the coast, as well as the caves’ setting as a hiding and refuge place throughout the ages and during World War II. There’ll likely be a festival around whichever time of the year you’re visiting: a few options throughout the East Sussex year are the Hastings Wine and Seafood Festival, Rye Bay Scallop Week, Pirate Day, May Day and the Hastings Old Town Carnival Week, along with loads of other smaller events. The Oak Valley team also recommends a wander around Winchelsea, the town with a boat and jetski launch, ancient history and a small museum.
