General

  • Large secluded site surrounded by woodland
  • Fifteen minutes from Hastings
  • Firepit hire, picnic area and barbecue

Are you an aficionado of walks and woodland? Rye not stay at East Sussex site Oak Valley Camping if so, as it’s surrounded by the woody stuff and has a heap of hiking trails through the woodland and at the nearby lakes. The Pett Level Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a short distance away.

Oak Valley is a peaceful park welcoming families and kids, away from busy tourist hordes but easily accessible by car to Sussex and its surrounds. There’s loads of space here for small sorts (and big sorts) to run around, as well a play area for under-eights with a big slide and a climbing frame, and a picnic area with tables and a barbecue for sizzling up lunch or dinner. Can’t be faffed? Two pubs serving food are close to the site.

The site amenities block is clean and modern with lashings of hot water for the showers; a washing-up area is also available for guests’ use.

Order forms with lists for items such as drinks, bread and logs can be delivered daily to guests.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

We had a great weekend recently camping here. Jodi was really lovely, the campsite is simple, clean and managed well. It's close enough to camber sands for a day at a beautiful beach. Or if the weather is poor there are other sites/activities to do close by. The kids loved the play fort and made friends. I loved going to sleep hearing the whoosh of trees and the fire pits! Thanks again Jodi and Oak Valley. We'll be seeing you soon!

    Disliked:

I disliked 'the port-a-loos' there was nothing wrong with them, they were clean but I just dislike toilets at camping...it's a tough one and I think one just needs to get over that! 😂

Peaceful setting, uncrowded, ideal for people who are in to nature as lots of birds and wildlife. Owners were very friendly.

    Disliked:

The photographs are misleading as they show a new modern shower and toilet block which is not in use. On the days we were there two of the showers didn't work and in the mornings they weren't clean at all. The facilities for washing up were not enough for the amount of people there.

Fab location. Portaloos around site. Surrounded by woods. You could hire glamping tents which looked beautiful. Washing up area.

    Disliked:

Sloping ground. Only 1 shower working. No sink in the other showers. No mirrors. Shower floors obviously get dirty but a mop and bucket would be useful as coming out of shower you would like a clean floor. Hairdryer for us novices!

Everything was superb, from the camp site, the toilets, the showers, the owner who was so friendly and welcoming. It was truly an amazing weekend away and I have already recommended the camp site to a load of friends. There wasn't one thing we had to complain about. The bed was really comfy and the layout of the tent in general was really nice.

    I'd give 6 stars if I could. 😉

    Disliked:

Although we never bought a dog with us, we did say that bringing my chihuahua with us would of been awesome as he would of loved it. Not really a dislike but I find that was the only flaw.

Great site with lots of space and you are never near anyone else as the owner restricts the numbers. You can pitch wherever you like. Children can roam the site in safety and will never be far aware. Very secluded site in the middle of country side and hilly but plenty of flat areas for pitching up. Toilets, showers (hot) and campers kitchen clean and tidy.

    Disliked:

Nothing really to dislike other than the site is a little hilly but that gives it charm as it isn't flat a boring.

Local attractions

Although it’s in a secluded spot, Oak Valley Camping is close to some of the best bits of Sussex including its coast and seaside towns. The medieval Cinque Port of Rye, with yachts at harbour, Castle Museum, nature reserves and Rye Harbour SSSI, is within a short drive.

Also speed along to old Hastings, 15 minutes away, for its Old Town and fishing quarters, beach and arcades, Priory Meadow shopping centre, two cliff railways and the Hastings Fisherman's Museum at Rock-a-Nore.

Just outside town, A Smugglers Adventure at St Clements Caves covers the smuggling history of this part of coast, as well as the caves’ setting as a hiding and refuge place throughout the ages and during World War II.

There’ll likely be a festival around whichever time of the year you’ve visiting: a few options throughout the East Sussex year are the Hastings Wine and Seafood Festival, Rye Bay Scallop Week, Pirate Day, May Day and the Hastings Old Town Carnival Week along with loads of other smaller events.

The Oak Valley team also recommends a wander around Winchelsea, the town with boat and jetski launch, ancient history and a small museum.
