  • Large secluded site surrounded by woodland
  • A 15-minute drive from Hastings
  • Firepit hire, picnic area and barbecue
Are you an aficionado of walks and woodland? Rye not stay at East Sussex site Oak Valley Camping if so, as it’s surrounded by the woody stuff and has a heap of hiking trails through the woodland and at the nearby lakes. The Pett Level Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a short distance away. Oak Valley is a peaceful park welcoming families and kids, away from busy tourist hordes but easily accessible by car to Sussex and its surrounds. There’s loads of space here for small sorts (and big sorts) to run around, and a picnic area with tables and a barbecue for sizzling up lunch or dinner. Can’t be faffed? Two pubs serving food are close to the site. The site amenities block has clean toilets and free hot water for showers; a washing-up area is also available for guests’ use.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The field was very large and you could pitch-up where you liked. The facilities were clean and very useful amenities at the site.

Disliked: Online it says no parties however there was a large group on site up until early hours of the morning. The site is also on a slope so just be aware when picking where to pitch.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful setting, Mike was so friendly and helpful, great amenities including kettle, toaster and lots of fridge space, device charging points for £1 a day. Lovely village with nice pub. Hilly so worth finding a flat spot to pitch. We didn’t have a car which required willingness to walk 35mins to a bus stop and careful planning as busses were only every hour or 2 hours, but very doable and we enjoyed the walks! Thank you so much for having us!

Oak-Tree bell tent

Liked: Beautiful location, not crowded - lots of space and great hosts. Large site surrounded by forest, close to the sea and some good pubs. We had a bell tent, which makes life very easy! The cabins are lovely too.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: LOVELY couple running the campsite, who make everyone welcome and they've really thought hard to provide what campers want and do a great job. The site is accessible and easy to find with very well kept / clean loos and showers and a well stocked shop with logs to buy to use in the hireable firespits etc. I LOVED the kettle and toaster being available to campers, and my son loved the phone charging station! Just great to have a hot cuppa while we got our own kitchens and kettles up and running! Well priced, with toilets and bins dotted around as it can be a climb up to the main block - again I think the owners are thoughtful about the campers' experiences.

Disliked: Not a lot can be done about this, but don't let this put you off as the owners are so lovely and helpful they make the campsite all the better! The site is hilly with only about 20 - 30% flat areas. Many campers many not care about flat but we have a large family tent and like a flat base. The showers are kept lovely and clean - hallelujah - but (again this can't be helped) having the showers 'side by side' so one has to step through a drying area of another camper while they are showering is a bit awkward. Still - it adds to the fun if you're comfortable with talking to strangers around the showers!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The site was big and there was lots of space. The host was very friendly and helpful. We had a broken pole and he lent us some tape to tape it up. Someone else's tent wasn't weatherproofed and let water in when it rained. The host tumbledried their sleeping bags for them and sorted out drying all their stuff. The toilets/showers were cleaned regularly. There was a kettle with teabags provided and a toaster, as well as a little shop for some essentials.

Oak-Tree bell tent

Liked: Location was nice, and the people were friendly. Good communal areas. Good that we had a fire pit to ourselves and that they had a little shop to buy things if needed.

Disliked: The tent was really dirty, and the mattresses were full of mud. There was cob webs and spiders crawling everywhere. Could have been cleaned a bit before we arrived. The mattress was also flat so it made for a really uncomfortable night. The road was really awkward to get there it was really thin even in a tony car and made it difficult when other cars came along in other direction. Would only stay again if i had my own tent.

Local attractions

Although it’s in a secluded spot, Oak Valley Camping is close to some of the best bits of Sussex including its coast and seaside towns. The medieval Cinque Port of Rye, with yachts at harbour, Castle Museum, nature reserves and Rye Harbour SSSI, is within a short drive. Also speed along to old Hastings, 15 minutes away, for its Old Town and fishing quarters, beach and arcades, Priory Meadow shopping centre, two cliff railways and the Hastings Fisherman's Museum at Rock-a-Nore. Just outside town, A Smugglers Adventure at St Clements Caves covers the smuggling history of this part of coast, as well as the caves’ setting as a hiding and refuge place throughout the ages and during World War II. There’ll likely be a festival around whichever time of the year you’ve visiting: a few options throughout the East Sussex year are the Hastings Wine and Seafood Festival, Rye Bay Scallop Week, Pirate Day, May Day and the Hastings Old Town Carnival Week along with loads of other smaller events. The Oak Valley team also recommends a wander around Winchelsea, the town with boat and jetski launch, ancient history and a small museum.
