  • Comfortable glampsite well placed for Hastings, Rye and Battle
  • Walks from the site including to an old inn and a microbrewery
  • Organically maintained surroundings in a stargazing haven
Venture deep into East Sussex countryside for a spectacular stay at Dogwood Glamping, among organically maintained surroundings in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This spot has snug units with wifi, a mini fridge and gas/electricity as well as bed linen to keep you cosy in the peaceful surrounds. Although based in a rural region, Dogwood is excellently placed for day trips to beaches, ancient woodlands and famed Sussex attractions like Rye, Hastings, Battle and Herstmonceux (with trips to the former two towns doable by bus). This is prime stargazing land too because of an eminently sensible decision of the local village’s powers that be (ensuring no street lights), leading to the likes of meteor showers easily visible in the skies overhead. That local village is Brede, 10 minutes’ walk away and home to a convenience store, a Friday morning farmers’ market and an intriguingly named ‘bakery and bangers’ shop. A bigger supermarket is 10 minutes’ drive away on the A21 towards Hastings and a small store selling organic food is back at the park. And also in Brede? A fine 15th-century inn is within walking distance of the site – most handily right across the fields from the site; just make sure to bring a torch for totters home. At Dogwood Glamping, amenities include a hot shower and two toilets, fresh water, wash basins, a chemical disposal point and a washing-up area: do look out on your wanders for the many animals who live at the park too…

Cabin

Liked: We really loved our stay at dogwood glamping. The owners Kate and Phil were great hosts and the cabin was clean, comfortable and cosy. We had our own private area outside the cabin ringed by trees and bushes where we barbecued every night. My children loved being visited by the on-site animals each morning which are left to roam and forage on the campsite. Camber Sands is a short drive away. The kids had a fantastic time playing in the sand dunes and Bodiam Castle is a wonderful historic site to visit and only a 15-minute drive from the campsite.

Dogwood 2 bedroom static caravan

Liked: Such a lovely stay at the Caravan - was immaculately clean, and well kitted out - my partner particularly loved the air fryer! Nicely quiet site, and especially fantastic in the morning where we could sit at the large windows and watch the birds hopping around the bath. Phil was great and checked with us to make sure we had everything we needed. Well located with parking right outside, and the furnishings were lovely - especially loved the decor, and the bed/bedding was soft and very clean. Was a lovely two-night getaway for us, and Brede is a really nice village with some great food options + you're under 20 minutes from Hastings and just over an hour to Brighton. We don't have children, but the second bedroom would have been perfect for a baby/toddler cot.

Yurt

Liked: We loved the location and the setting. It was quiet, great for seeing stars and the yurt was great. Our little boy loved the animals and was thrilled to see ducks, chickens and goats every day! The yurt was cosy, with a two single beds and lots of cosy rugs on the floor. The decked area and fire pit were perfect as we love doing campfire/ outdoor cooking. I hope we can come back again, everyone was friendly, everything was clean and it was a great location for the woods and beaches in Sussex.

Yurt

Liked: These comments are based on 2 people staying in a Yurt costing £100+ a night. Spacious inside and well decorated. Good showers and toilets but no mirrors for those who shave! Very quiet camp site.

Disliked: 1. The Yurt had definitely seen better days and inside some of the roof lining was split and hanging down. 2. The curtains on the front door were dirty. 3. The fridge was very small so not suitable for a stay of any length. 4. 2 x single beds without headboards. No double. 5. No wifi and poor mobile phone reception. 6. Not value for money.

From the manager: When this review was posted the cover and lining of the Yurt, after 10 years in place, had indeed seen better days. As of April 2023 however, the Yurt has a brand new canvas and a brand new lining. It is beautiful and back to its original glory, and despite this gentleman's otherwise rather unfair comments, remains one of the most comfortable, well appointed and well located Yurts in the country. As almost all other reviews can testify. And, in terms of quality, compared to others, it is extremely good value - just look around. There is no issue at all with mobile phone, and data, reception. Possibly a problem with the gentleman's phone, or ability to use it? The beds are Taurus handmade with high quality, no expense spared, Egyptian cotton linen and Siberian goose down duvets, laundered and ironed (not the duvets!) between each guest. They are, as many, many guests point out, remarkably comfortable. The fridge is a 22 litre Caldura 'hotel standard' one, takes large bottles of wine, and operates completely silently. Again no expense has been spared. It is perfectly adequate for a stay of several days. And more importantly, unlike in most Yurts, it is actually there! The 'curtains' on the door are not 'curtains', they are authentic Tibetan door coverings that someone had put their bootmarks on. They require professional cleaning which is of course something difficult to do between each guest. With respect it is difficult to see how, in the greater scheme of things, they could have impacted the gentleman's stay. A quality, luxury Yurt is a rare thing in this country and is a labour of love to maintain. But at their best, which we believe ours is, they provide possibly the best glamping experience that can be had.

A good rustic and simple site

Bell tent (adults only)

Liked: Such a hidden gem. We were booked into the bell tent, which is in a beautiful area on the grounds, It's a wooded area with a fire pit, cooking pit and seating area. The bell tent Itself was beautiful inside with a mini fridge, fan, heater and kettle. Everything was very clean, fresh, tidy and welcoming. As soon as we unpacked and lit the fire we were at peace and had a beautiful nights sleep. Unfortunately the following day there was some work being done on a house on the main road which no-one knew about so there was lots of noise and shouting.... BUT one quick text to Katy and she was right on it ! She came straight over, apologied, told us she was going to move us away from the noise and showed us the log cabin. Within 15 minutes we were transported back to the peace and quiet. The log cabin again was very beautiful, quite, peaceful, clean and tidy. It also had a kettle, mini fridge and a heater. The bed was so comfortable ! There's a seating area right outside the door and an area with a fire pit and barbecue grill, benches, a small meditation area and a private compost toilet. The main toilets and shower area was very well looked after and very clean and tidy. Everyone was friendly and not a TV or stereo in earshot ! All you could hear while walking around was the birds singing, the site animals chatting (who loved to come and say hi), children and adults playing, laughing and talking, which is a very rare thing these days. This campsite is very relaxed and family friendly but as soon as you go to the bell tent or even the cabin areas you don't hear them or anything else really but the animals and the wind in the trees. I honestly cannot recommend this place enough. Katy was amazing and the perfect host who would do anything for you and nothing was to much bother. We will be returning again soon

Disliked: The only problem I had was with the toilet tent in the bell area. It is very weather worn with a few holes/rips in it. I found it a bit difficult getting in and out of as the zip kept getting stuck and not much room once inside. Its not a major issue and definitely doesn't affect the bell tent experience as the main toilet area wasn't far. But I think the toilet tent needs to either be replaced or just totally removed.

Local attractions

Browse the shops of Brede, 10 minutes’ walk away, or mosey on over to this village for the Brede Steam Giants’ display of 35-feet steam engine pumps from times gone by (open on bank holiday Mondays and the first Saturday of every month). Fans of mechanical contraptions may also want a go on The Kent & East Sussex Railway running through the Rother valley and stopping outside the National Trust’s Bodiam Castle (a 10-minute drive). Rove over to Rye (15 minutes) for bike hire and more countryside explores on the cycle paths and lanes; Battle’s the same distance to visit the site of the famed Battle of Hastings in 1066. Meanwhile, the Old Town of Hastings – for seaside days and nightlife – is 20 minutes’ drive away; those who’d like to take to the water might well want dips here or could travel on to Camber Sands to kitesurf (25 minutes), then roam to the River Rother for kayaking.
