• Peaceful park near the Cuckoo Trail and 20 mins' drive from the coast
  • Firepits, solar shower and sustainably coppiced wood for sale
  • Fishing tuition, instruction and kit hire all available
Ah… one could womble around these Sussex parts for weeks. Wimbles Farm is close to the family-friendly bike rides of the Cuckoo Trail, 20 minutes' drive from the coast and just over an hour's bike ride to the South Downs National Park… hire a bike on site and pedal off. Wimbles is for those who shudder at heaving sites and who want to settle down in the peace of the countryside (and who maybe want to secretly want to do a little Ray Mears-ing about, say the site owners). On offer are a solar shower and compost toliet, fresh drinking water, a wheelbarrow to cart about your kit, and sustainably coppiced wood for sale to blaze up a campfire under the Sussex stars. Seasonal organic produce is available from the farm. And another reason one could womble around Wimbles Farm for weeks? Fishing tuition, instruction and kit hire from the site owner can be booked on arrival for an extra charge, to try your luck in a lake naturally stocked with carp, bream, perch, pike, tench, rudd and roach: no fishing licence required. (Also a wizard Wimbles Farm thing: two good pubs serving tasty food and beer are within walking distance.)

Local attractions

Fishing and walking are two main activities around this part of East Sussex, as are the gentle pedals and safe family riding of the Cuckoo Trail, the 14-mile path running from Hampden Park to Heathfield. (Stop off for an afternoon's shopping in Heathfield when you get there, as the Wimbles Farm owners say the market town has one of the best butchers and bakers in the area.) The coast and beaches of Bexhill, Eastbourne and St Leonard's are about 20 minutes' drive away; from there, head with haste to Hastings for the two cliff railways, old fishing village Rock-a-Nore and the famed Hastings Fishmarket (Hastings has the biggest beachside fishing fleet in Europe). The South Downs National Park is around an hour away by bike, so hire wheels from the Wimbles Farm team and pedal around the tiny villages and up and down chalk hills, or along the South Downs Way's 100 miles from Eastbourne up to Winchester in Hampshire.
