General

  • Peaceful back-to-basics site on a working farm in rural Sussex
  • A 20-minute drive from the beaches of the south coast
  • Firepit and cooking grid provided for each pitch

You’d be wise to arrive at Warbleton Farms with a plentiful stash of marshmallows – campfires are a big feature of life here and you don’t want to be in danger of snack envy upon spying your fellow guests’ after-dinner treats...

Those of you that aren’t in possession of a campfire-building badge from Scouts or Brownies (or if your skills have gone a touch rusty in the intervening years) will be chuffed to find that life has been made easy for you here: each pitch has its own firepit and grid so no worries about whether you’ve chosen a sensible spot. All there is for you to do is build and light the fire, crack open a cold drink and look impressed at your survival skills.

If it turns out that your survival skills don’t quite stretch to a full dinner, don’t worry – there’s a lovely little 16th-century pub only a couple of minutes’ walk away so it’s easy to beat a hasty retreat for a full feed up there.

Kids (and adults should you wish) can really roam free around here; with no cars outside of the designated parking areas it’s pretty safe to run about and play games. The lack of cars also means it’s mighty quiet should you choose to settle yourself into one of the hammocks in the woods and spend a bit of time communing with nature. Wildlife spotting opps abound in the woods and around the stream so keep your eyes peeled for passing beasties.

The back to basics vibe on this working arable farm means only minimal facilities, but you’re provided with drinking water and composting toilets. There isn’t even any wifi (no need to mention this to the kids – once they’re over the initial shock they’ll soon work out that it is indeed possible to survive offline).

We couldn't have loved this place more. It was peaceful, secluded and quiet. We were on the Brooks 2 pitch and I would recommend that if you want to be completely alone you check as to which of the pitches would be suitable as we were about 25 metres from the Brooks 1 pitch where another family were staying (this was fine for us). My girls (both 8) were so happy running around in the woods and playing in the stream and on the rope swings and hammocks. Being right next to the woods provided a good amount of cover so we were able to have a campfire even when it rained a bit. The owner was lovely and so helpful and we definitely plan to come back next year with family and take both pitches! If you are looking for something close to a wild camping experience I would highly recommend Warbleton Farms x

Brooks No1. Literally liked everything about Warbleton farm campsite, simple back to basics camping. Idillic location, our two boys made the most of the wide open space, the woodland and enjoyed the rope swing even in the dark. If you are looking for off the grid camping this is the site for you. We were provided with our own fire pit, our own sawdust toilet, drinking water and a healthy supply of logs to burn. Vicky was brilliant, she came to check that we were happy then left us to it, on a day out we asked if we could have some more logs for that evening and they were there when we got back. There were other campers on the Brooks site, but due to the huge site it felt like we were totally on our own.

Beautiful views, peace and quiet cannot be described, woods to wander in, lovely walks, quiet stream, butterflies, crickets humming away in the grasses, compost toilet not unpleasant at all, Vicky was great - very attentive, the array of birds you hear chatting away is fab and not like home at all.

    Disliked:

Mosquitos and horse flies are out, bring repellent! And there are occasional gunshots from a nearby field so if your dog is afraid of fireworks be warned.

This is a beautiful woodland site with simple but thoughtful features. The camp kitchen area built into the trees, the rustic camp benches and the rope swings reminded us of being children making a den in the woods- it was truly magical! The composting toilet was easy to use and was well maintained. We loved being able to light a real open fire in the woods.

Local attractions

Now that they’ve got a taste for country life, kids can play at being a farmer at Blackberry Farm, a 20-minute drive away. There are lots of friendly animals to meet here, and a daily schedule of activities including tractor rides, pony rides, pig feeding and egg collecting. There’s also a huge play area with a zip slide, trampolines, go-kart track, an assault course and heaps more for hours of entertainment.

Animals from all around the world are on show at Drusillas Park, 25 minutes away: wander around to see monkeys, camels, penguins and snakes among others. Pack the kids’ swimming cossies and they can splash about in the water play area, full of jets, fountains and geysers to keep them chilled on a warm day.

At Bentley Wildfowl & Motor Museum, half an hour away, you can feed the birds (around 1000 of them, across more than 100 different species), take a ride on the miniature railway and look around the collection of cars, motorbikes and other vehicles, some of which are more than 100 years old.

Even older is 15th-century Herstmonceux Castle, 20 minutes away; the moated castle is surrounded by a 300-acre estate made up of woods and formal gardens. Castle tours are available at certain times of day (check before you arrive) but you can always wander around the estate and, if you’re visiting in high season, perhaps take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage.

It’ll only take you about 20 minutes to drive to the coast for some beachy fun: head to Eastbourne for a classic British seaside resort beach, or make tracks for Pevensey Bay to find something a bit wilder. If you’d like to get on the water, a watersports centre in Eastbourne can sort windsurfing, sailing or paddleboarding from the beach.
