Site overview

  • Wildlife haven on a peaceful farm site in East Sussex
  • A 10-minute drive from Hailsham and 25 minutes from Eastbourne
  • Private woodland; on-site fishing for an extra charge
Under the tender care of the same family for 50 years, Wild Weald Camping is a wildlife haven on a 140-acre farm in Hellingly in the East Sussex countryside. While this is farm life in its traditional incarnation, this family-friendly site is still within easy reach of the local towns. Find tender meat for the barbecue in the market town of Hailsham, a 10-minute drive away, or swap the rural views for beachy ones in Eastbourne, 25 minutes away. This is a peaceful site indeed, where you'll be able to switch off and reconnect with nature and/or your family among quiet pastures and woodlands. There's plenty of space for the kids to make dens and play hide and seek in the private woodland in the south, and there's also a fishing pond where you can try your luck with a rod (extra charge applies; subject to availability). Once you’ve thoroughly explored around the site, head to the lavender fields and medieval manors of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 35 minutes away – walks here are rather like jumping into a landscape painting. Handily, each pitch comes with a map of how to explore the area on foot as well as further afield. But what’s a camping trip without a bit of fireside chat? Don’t fret, you're welcome to bring along a firepit for a campfire, or you can hire one on site (with logs for sale too). And you won’t need to worry about leaving your canine friends behind either, as two dogs are welcome (although you'll need to keep them on a lead).

Electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked Welcomed on site by the lovely owners. A beautiful idyllic site, very peaceful and quiet. Large pitches, with plenty of space. Surrounded by nature, dragonflies, butterflies, many birds including a woodpecker and an owl. The showers and toilets are attended often and are kept very clean. The water pressure in the shower does drop if another camper is using water elsewhere, shower, washing up or nearby taps. The track from the road to the campsite was a little too uneven for our campervan, but a small price to pay for such a picturesque site.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked Everything. The staff were warm and welcoming, and so friendly. On the Saturday there was a pop up bar in the woods with hot dogs and drinks. The food was amazing! Pitches were a great size and the toilets were clean and tidy. Great location for exploring the south downs. Highly recommend

Electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked The incredibly friendly owners - they had a chat with all the campers as they did the log run each night, it really made the stay.

Huge expanse of woodland for the children to explore and play in. Kids are able to play and explore and be kids. You are off the beaten track and felt very safe.
Tents not too close together, plenty of room for children to play ball games etc.

We didn't have to wait for a shower, the facilities are well matched to the number of pitches/campers. We saw owls and deer during our stay here, and heard all sorts of other wildlife.

The pub in the woods on the Saturday night was glorious.

Disliked Nothing at all. We will be back!

Electric grass tent or campervan pitch (XL)

Liked Peaceful site down a wooded track, with some shade later in the day. Most pitches looked flat, maybe a little slope near the bottom of the site near the trees. 2 showers and 3 loos in the ladies block, plus the outside shower (not tested). Electric pitches were long, and wide enough for a tent plus vehicle. Water taps near the shower block, with a washing up area. Liked could bring own fire brazier and wood. Nearest supermarkets in Hailsham about 7 miles away. Small CoOp nearer, but not visited. There is no reception area, so check your confirmation to make sure you're on the right pitch! There is plenty of space on the site generally.......it may feel a little cosy when the electric pitches are all occupied at the same time! Hosts, Francis and Pam,do a nightly tour around 6pm to deliver wood, and check how you are. They are very warm and welcoming. Mobile signal not picked up on the campsite on Vodafone, but it improved as you walked along the track towards the exit. Not a problem for us, but may need to be considered if you rely on connecting!

Disliked New pitch neighbours arrived midway through our booking. They played loud music all day/evening and let their many dogs wander around off lead.

Electric grass tent or campervan pitch (XL)

Liked We were two families staying for a weekend in August in two pitches. The site was spacious, with a large wood for the children to investigate. The owners were around every evening to rent a fire pit or if you needed more wood. The toilets were some of the cleanest I’ve seen. We had a very calm relaxed weekend.

Disliked Absolutely perfect.

Liked It was the only site I could get last minute near to Eastbourne for the air show. It’s like a wild camping site with electric. Toilets ok ish, small room to manoeuvre to dry oneself. Quite remote. But an ok site.

Local attractions

Ahoy there, me hearties – if you’ve got kids, you won’t want to miss out on Treasure Island, where kids can pretend to be on Captain Hook’s ship for a day on a host of pirate-themed attractions. Elsewhere, take a tumble at Fort Fun (25 minutes), an outdoor water adventure park with all manner of slides. The adventure continues at Knockhatch Adventure Park (10 minutes), where kids will be throwing scraps to meerkats one minute and racing down waterslides the next. It’s not all play pretend, though. After plotting your way through the 300-acre woodlands and formal themed gardens, you can gaze at real moats and red bricks at 15th-century Herstmonceux Castle (15 minutes) or get starry-eyed using the telescopes at The Observatory Science Centre (15 minutes). Look west and you’ll find Eastbourne (25 minutes) and its colourful art scene, while closer by, you can pack a picnic for the 18-acre Blackberry Farm Park (15 minutes) – just make sure the alpacas and wildfowl don’t nab your sandwich while your back is turned. More chummy animals await at the zoo at Drusillas Park (25 minutes).
