  • Luxury shepherd’s hut 10 minutes’ drive from Cockerham, Lancashire
  • Half an hour’s drive to the Lake District; 20 minutes to Morecambe Bay
  • Private shower hut and terrace; pubs and restaurants 10 minutes’ drive
Sitting on farmland with lovely views to the Lancashire Pennines, Hillside Hut is a luxurious – and adults-only – sanctuary for couples seeking adventure in the Lake District National Park (half an hour’s drive) or the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes). Peace and quiet it has in spades, yet it’s also mighty convenient to get too, being just 10 minutes’ drive from Cockerham and Junction 33 of the M6. The carefully hand-crafted shepherd’s hut is fully insulated and heated by a woodfired log burner (you can buy firewood on site) to keep you toasty warm on even the coldest of winter days. A cosy double bedroom has views out on to the fields and lots of under-bed storage for all your bits and bobs, there’s a compact seating area and a kitchen with all the gear needed to rustle up something tasty for supper. Right next-door is the exclusive-use shower room, reached via a private terrace with up-cycled barrels as seating and a firepit for barbecues on warmer evenings. Prefer eating out? The market town of Garstang (10 minutes) has lots of pubs and restaurants to keep you happy.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Liked everything about Hillside Hut. It was beautifully designed and presented, with great style, but also providing all the essentials we didn't expect to necessarily find in a compact holiday unit, as well as extras. The situation of the Hut gave privacy and peace and quiet, making it a really relaxing break. The hosts Steve and Jo were very friendly and helpful, and the countryside around the buildings was lovely. The facilities provided i.e. the Hut and adjoining bathroom , were fantastic, however this is not a camp site, it is a solo hut, so there are no facilities such as entertainment to comment on. Definitely recommend a visit.

Local attractions

A stay at the Hillside Hut puts you in pole position for visiting the stunning coastline of Morecambe Bay (20 minutes’ drive). Take the binoculars to watch out for plovers, curlews and oystercatchers on Duddon Estuary (an hour), have a gentle ramble (looking out for rare wild orchids in summer) on the ancient woodlands in Arnside and Silverdale AONB (half an hour), and stroll along the promenade in Morecambe (20 minutes) itself for spectacular views to Lakeland mountain peaks. Make for Blackpool (35 minutes) to spend an afternoon on thrill rides at the Pleasure Beach, see stingrays and reef sharks in the tanks at SEA LIFE Blackpool, or have a jolly night out at the circus in The Blackpool Tower. For a more sedate urban day out in Lancaster (15 minutes), take a guided tour of the castle to hear about the trial of the Pendle Witches in 1612 and have a poke around the dank prison cells. Learn all about the seafaring past of Morecambe Bay at the Maritime Museum, and trace the region’s history with interactive exhibits at the City Museum.
