  • Back-to-basics dog-friendly site a 15-minute drive from Blackburn
  • Haworth Art Gallery 15 minutes’ drive; Morecambe Bay 45 minutes
  • Two pubs within a 15-minute walk; hikes; sunset views of Darwen Tower
Sitting on a family-run farm just outside the Lancashire village of Belthorn, a 15-minute drive from Blackburn, Greystones Farm is a great spot for cynophiles: not only are there four friendly sheepdogs keeping an eye on the flock, but you’re welcome to bring your own four-legged companions – providing they play nice with other hounds and assorted animal residents in the surrounding fields, which include horses and cattle. You’ll have to embrace a pretty basic lifestyle here: there are no toilets or showers on site. However, there are pretty spectacular vistas across the countryside, as far as Darwen Tower to the west (up a hill in the West Pennine Moors, 25 minutes’ drive away) and Pendle Hill to the north east (half an hour). And with Greystones Farm sitting at 1,000 feet above sea level, on clear days you might even catch a glimpse of the Lancashire coast and Morecambe Bay (45 minutes). Local hiking areas include Tinkler’s Brook and its pretty waterfall (five minutes’ walk); Hog Lowe Pike Trigpoint (five minutes’ drive), from where you can take in views of the Rossendale Valley; and Holcombe Moor (20 minutes), which is also popular with mountain bikers. There are two pubs (both serving food) within a 15-minute walk; a farm shop with a vending machine dispensing milkshakes, eggs, butter, cheese and desserts is a 10-minute walk away.

Local attractions

Pick up picnic supplies and head to Witton Country Park (15 minutes’ drive), on the banks of the River Darwen. In addition to nature walks (including the circular Beamer’s Trail), the site has adventure playgrounds in the woods, and it also plays host to events such as workshops and music festivals. Have a go at skiing or snowboarding at Ski Rossendale (15 minutes): either book a taster session or, if you’re already confident on the slopes, just turn up and pretend you’re in the Alps as you ski down the hill. If you feel lazy, there are also tubing sessions. Tiffany glassware and paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries are among the items on display at Haworth Art Gallery (15 minutes). The building itself is known for its elegant Arts & Crafts stylings. For something more contemporary, head to the Singing Ringing Tree (20 minutes), a hilltop installation that’s played by the wind as it passes through its steel pipes. And where else? Historic Clitheroe Castle (half an hour) has gorgeous views of the countryside. Blackburn Cathedral (10 minutes) is a stunning spot for those interested in architecture or religious history. As for hikers (or indeed, cyclists), the Ribble Valley (half an hour) has lots of trails and spectacular scenery.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We were delighted to be the first guests here. The description is very accurate - there are no facilities - but the views can be lovely. We were treated to views over the valley whilst sitting outside the tent in a lovely sunset, and it was possible to see Morecombe Bay to the west. This is camping at its most basic but with the benefit of a super friendly family as hosts. We were in the lower field which might get challenging in wet weather if on bikes, as we were. The upper field has a hard standing path so shouldn’t be as potentially weather challenged. There aren’t any stores in the village but there are two pubs in close walking distance (10-15 mins). We understand that they do food but didn’t have the opportunity to test them out. If you’re self-catering, as we were, make sure you have supplies. If you haven’t, then Blackburn is only about 15 mins drive away. The site is up on the edge of the moors and super quiet. We woke to find ourselves in cloud but this lifted by the time we had packed up. The site wasn’t signposted, so check and remember the address. It is at the top end of the village and the sat-nav did take us there but it had been a long day. No problem once we’d checked the address and asked a friendly passing dog walker. This is basic camping, but who needs more than space to park up, pitch a tent and enjoy the landscape. Who knew you could have a wild camping experience so close to Blackburn! No Wi-Fi, no loos but fresh water.

From the manager: Thank you for your review and for being our first campers! I'm pleased that you enjoyed your stay and hope you had a pleasant journey back. Since you stayed, we have upgraded our facilities to include an on site toilet. We pride ourselves in being a back to basics campsite, and as you mentioned an almost 'wild camping' experience for people that want to escape from the hustle and bustle of every day life to a remote location! Thanks again and take care :-)
