General

  • Glamping in the grounds of a 14th-century stately home
  • Shepherd's huts with ensuite bathrooms, heating and proper beds
  • Restaurant, dessert café, mini farm and large playground on site

Smart shepherd’s huts in the grounds of a stately home – how splendid.

If you’ve ever fancied having the run of a huge country estate, take a look at these posh pads in a peaceful corner of the gardens at Samlesbury Hall, a gorgeous half-timbered medieval hall in the Lancashire countryside halfway between Preston and Blackburn.

As befits such stately surrounds, these handcrafted huts have all mod cons for a comfy stay: memory foam mattresses on the beds, a kettle for your morning cuppa and low-wattage plug sockets and USB ports to keep gadgets charged. The huts are heated to keep you cosy on chilly nights, and you’ll be supplied with lanterns and a firepit for alfresco eves. Each hut also has an ensuite bathroom with a hot shower and towels provided.

You’ll pretty much have the run of the grounds here, so there’s plenty of space for the kids to roam about and play games; there’s also an excellent Mayflower-themed wooden playground at their disposal, as well as a mini farm to meet friendly animals. The restaurant serves up top-notch breakfasts and daytime meals, and there are sweet treats galore to be had at Dottie’s Wafflery.

When you fancy heading out, it’ll take you 15 minutes or so to drive to Preston or Blackburn, or you can lurk at the bus stop outside the site and wait to be whisked into town.

Nice place. Needs a vaccum in the huts and mattress protectors. 19/08/2018

    Disliked:

No luxury toiletries (as website stated), dusty floor under the beds and dirt on top of blinds, no pillow or mattress protectors on the memory foam mattresses, no lantern (as website) as lots have been stolen.
Needed to ask for our fire kit (£5 extra) as wasn’t provided on check in
No WiFi. Variable EE connectivity around the grounds.

Polite staff, Cleanliness, beautiful grounds, lots of exploring for all ages, huts were perfect. We are so pleased we have discovered this little gem. We will be coming back here without a doubt. The huts were gorgeous with heating and a shower and felt so clean. I'm amazed how deceiving the space looks from the outside. Picnic bench outside with a fire pit, beautiful environment. We sadly went on a rainy day but thats didn't stop us. We bought a gazebo and still had a fire and bbq. The tea and coffee making facilities is a lovely touch also. Staff cannot do enough for you and so much to explore. I felt like the children were really safe and we didn't have to worry. Seems to be things to do locally too and petrol station/24 hour shop about 1 minute drive.

Great shepherd's huts but location isn't the best 08/05/2018

Comfy beds, excellent shower, smartly decorated hut, helpful service, ability to wander across to the hall

    Disliked:

Being right next to the BAE site, small amount of wood for the firepit (until we asked for more).

From the manager...

Thank you for your review!

The Hamlet is still a working progress, with only 10 more huts to be built before completion. The view is covered by a Bund and will soon have beautiful wildflowers and bee friendly plants covering this! The Hamlet itself is set in the grounds of an almost 700 year old historic house, which is open to the public 6 days a week.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay, and hope to see you again soon!

Local attractions

The obvious place to start is right on site: the hall and grounds are open most of the week for poking around in (although do check for weddings or other functions taking place before you wander in). Free tours can be had on Sundays, when you can learn about the hall’s history, its witching links and some of its ghostly goings on.

For a bit more history, Elizabethan Hoghton Tower and the Ribchester Roman Museum are both within a 15-minute drive. Should the nippers be tiring of cultural pursuits, Preston is 15 minutes away for shopping and various entertainments, or you can get to Blackpool’s beach in around half an hour.

If you’d rather take in a bit more nature, plenty of walking trails are three miles away at Brockholes nature reserve, which is also a starting point for the 21-mile Preston Guild Wheel cycle route.
