  • Glamping in the grounds of a 14th-century stately home
  • Preston, Blackburn and Brockholes nature reserve within 15 minutes
  • Restaurant, dessert café, mini farm and large playground on site

Smart shepherd’s huts in the grounds of a stately home – how splendid. If you’ve ever fancied having the run of a huge country estate, take a look at these posh pads in a peaceful corner of the gardens at Samlesbury Hall, a gorgeous half-timbered medieval hall in the Lancashire countryside halfway between Preston and Blackburn.

As befits such stately surrounds, these hand-crafted huts have all mod cons for a comfy stay: memory foam mattresses on the beds, a kettle for your morning cuppa and low-wattage plug sockets and USB ports to keep the gadgets charged. Huts are heated to keep you cosy on chilly nights, and you’ll be supplied with lanterns and a firepit for those alfresco evenings. Each one also has an ensuite bathroom with a hot shower and towels provided.

You’ll pretty much have the run of the grounds here, so there’s plenty of space for the kids to roam about and play games; there’s also an excellent Mayflower-themed wooden playground and a mini farm where they can meet the friendly animals. The restaurant serves up top-notch breakfasts and daytime meals, and there are sweet treats galore to be had at Dottie’s Wafflery. More restaurants and pubs are a short walk or drive away.

When you fancy heading out, it’ll take you 15 minutes or so to drive to Preston or Blackburn, or you can lurk at the bus stop outside the site and await to be whisked into town.

Local attractions

The obvious place to start is right there on site – the hall and grounds are open most of the week for poking around in (although do check for weddings or other functions taking place before you wander in). Free tours can be had on Sundays, when you can learn about the hall’s history, its witching links and some of its ghostly goings-on.

For a bit more history, Elizabethan Hoghton Tower and the Ribchester Roman Museum are both within a 15-minute drive. Should the nippers be tiring of cultural pursuits, Preston is 15 minutes away for shopping and various entertainments, or you can get to Blackpool’s beach in around half an hour.

If you’d rather take in a bit more nature, there are plenty of walking trails three miles away at Brockholes nature reserve, which is also a starting point for the 21-mile Preston Guild Wheel cycle route.
