Samlesbury Hall: Shepherds Hut & pod

General

  • Glamping in the grounds of a 14th-century stately home
  • Shepherd's huts with ensuite bathrooms, heating and proper beds
  • Heritage café with ice cream and waffles; large playground on site

Smart shepherd’s huts in the grounds of a stately home – how splendid.

If you’ve ever fancied having the run of a huge country estate, take a look at these posh pads in a peaceful corner of the gardens at Samlesbury Hall, a gorgeous half-timbered medieval hall in the Lancashire countryside halfway between Preston and Blackburn.

As befits such stately surrounds, these handcrafted huts have all mod cons for a comfy stay: memory foam mattresses on the beds, a kettle for morning cuppas, and low-wattage plug sockets and USB ports to keep gadgets charged. The huts are heated to keep you cosy on chilly nights, and there are lanterns and a firepit for alfresco eves. Each hut also has an ensuite bathroom with a hot shower and towels provided.

You’ll pretty much have the run of the grounds here, so there’s plenty of space for the kids to roam about and play games; there’s also an excellent Mayflower-themed wooden playground at their disposal. The heritage café serves up top-notch breakfasts and daytime meals, and there are sweet treats galore to be had at Dottie’s Wafflery. Smores kits, disposable barbecues and logs are all also available at reception when it is open.

When you fancy heading out, it’s 15 minutes or so to drive to Preston or Blackburn, or you can wait at the bus stop outside the site and wait to be whisked into town.

Please note

Reception is unmanned after 5 p.m.. Please inform the park while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Breed-specific legislation (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.

The café is open between 08.30am and 2.30pm between Tuesday and Sunday.

Its Set in beautiful grounds and lovely to walk round.

Comfortable, cosy, quiet, lovely surroundings. Cafe menu looked a little expensive but it was such a lovely setting that I decided to try to it. It was well worth the money, gorgeous breakfast and I didn't eat for the rest of the day. Travelling on my own (apart from my dog) and I felt safe and relaxed even during the late night dog walk.
A lovely hut with a proper bathroom is a bonus too

The camp area was very well set up. The hut was spacious, there was only 2 of us. Bathroom and shower adequate, nice that basics ie. toilet rolls, hand-wash, shower gel was provided. Purchased fire pit starter kit with booking. Nice experience of glamping for our first time. Had lovely neighbours that we shared and shaped items with. Would definitely recommend!!

Local attractions

The obvious place to start is right on site: the hall and grounds are open most of the week for poking around in (although do check for weddings or other functions taking place before you wander in). Free tours can be had on Sundays, to learn about the hall’s history, its witching links and some of its ghostly goings on.

Clitheroe (20 minutes' drive), a market town with a castle, makes a great day out too, while it's roughly three quarters of an hour to Skipton in the Yorkshire Dales or to the southern Lakes.

Should the nippers be tiring of cultural pursuits, Preston is 15 minutes away for shopping and various entertainments, or you can get to Blackpool’s beach in around half an hour.

If you’d rather take in a bit more nature, plenty of walking trails are three miles away at Brockholes nature reserve, which is also a starting point for the 21-mile Preston Guild Wheel cycle route.

Must see

  • Forest of Bowland (9.4 kilometers)
  • Oswaldtwistle Mills (12.0 kilometers)
  • Beacon Fell Country Park (13.6 kilometers)

National Trust

  • Gawthorpe Hall (18.3 kilometers)
  • Rufford Old Hall (21.7 kilometers)
