  • Dog-friendly tents with hot tubs on an estate in the Forest of Bowland
  • Walk to Grizedale Fell, Nicky Nook and the village pub or tearoom
  • Wild swimming and boating available on the estate’s lake
Wyresdale Park has changed little in the last 200 years… there are still old fishing ponds tucked into the woods and free-roaming fallow deer around this Lancashire estate. The house, built in the 19th century, has pleasure gardens and stone buildings, and the hunting, sheep farming and fishing culture is still alive. Newer to the estate is Feather Down – Wyresdale Park, a gorgeous dog-friendly site where guests stay in smart safari tents around the estate’s lake. The Whewell children grew up here, damming streams, sailing wooden boats and building firepits in the woods – and now Sally and James Whewell have set up this place so you and your kids can do much of the same (plus boating and wild swimming too). The 45 square metres of living space in each tent includes a proper shower, flushing toilet and comfortable mattresses – plus a private hot tub outside. The farm is off grid, so step away from the screens and busy yourself with stoking the woodburning stove or paddling in the shallow northern end of the lake. Swimming is possible in the southern end (and heartily recommended by the owners). At the bottom of the garden is Grizedale Fell, a fine sunset spot with views over the Irish Sea. Guests can also walk to upland pastures and moorlands, deep wooded valleys or Scorton village (15 minutes’ walk), which has a tearoom and a family-friendly pub selling local ales, wine and food. As a private estate, Wyresdale Park is free from traffic and big crowds. The Apple Store Café is based in the walled garden (and open Wednesday to Sunday, 9am-4pm). There, guests can tuck into local or homemade produce like sandwiches, soups and cakes. The chef is also happy to prepare a selection of ready meals. Maybe you’ll need the energy for football or rope swinging on the estate…

Local attractions

Stroll to Nicky Nook (20 minutes’ walk), a 214-metre fell with views as far as the Lake District. Like Grizedale Fell, it’s part of Wyresdale Park. The circular walks are all between one and four miles, making them fairly family friendly (just another bonus, on top of the views). Fancy another scenic stroll? Abbeystead Estate (20 minutes’ drive) has wildlife such as curlew, lapwing and redshank. In the neighbouring valley to the site, there’s also a popular dog-friendly pub on the river Hodder with open fires and food and drink available. The drive to the valley is stunning itself, passing by lands owned by the Duke of Westminster. If you fancy another bite to eat, head to the market town of Garstang (10 minutes), which has shops stocking local produce or big supermarkets.
