  • Family-owned park on the banks of the River Wyre
  • Carefully landscaped wildlife haven with over 5000 trees
  • Four well-stocked and well-maintained fishing ponds
If you're a sucker for a place with a bit of family heritage, have a look at Claylands Caravan Park. The Robinsons have owned Claylands for more than 50 years, when it was a simple 14-acre farm; since then, it’s been transformed into a landscaped holiday park, while keeping an edge of wilderness. This lush place is on the banks of the River Wyre, surrounded by more than 5000 indigenous trees and in a haven for wildlife and birdwatching: look out for squirrels, foxes, deer, rabbits and around 85 different species of bird. On site are carefully pruned hedges, shrubs and trees, loads of green space, and excellent amenities including a modern shower and toilet block, a laundry room, and drinking water taps and waste water disposal points all around. Anglers will be well chuffed with the four well-stocked and well-maintained fishing ponds, abundant with roach, carp and tench: to be in with your fishing chance, arrive with your kit and the appropriate licence, and pick up a day ticket from the family team. Other facilities on site include a handy shop for the essentials, as well as a kids' adventure playground swish enough to make grownups green with envy. Light snacks and homemade meals can be had at Stepping Stones Riverside Bar and Restaurant, just adjacent to the park (open Tuesday-Sunday all year round), which has a takeaway service, pretty views from inside the restaurant and a spacious garden for dining outside.

What customers say

This is a highly regarded campsite praised for its immaculate facilities, friendly and helpful staff, and beautiful surroundings. Visitors highlight the clean, well-maintained pitches and amenities, and the on-site restaurant and pub receive consistently positive reviews for food and atmosphere. The site is also noted for its family-friendly features, including a park and river access. Downsides mentioned by a minority include noise from nearby roads/trains, the presence of pylons, and the distance of some facilities from pitches.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked We really liked and we’re grateful that our request to be sited near the toilets/showers was granted.
We found the site very friendly and relaxing. The wardens and all the staff were friendly and helpful.
We were very happy with the pub/club house. Food was great and plenty of choices.
Our little water mad patterdale terrier, Tilly, absolutely loved the river. We loved the ready and ample supply of pebbles to throw in for her.
The whole layout of the site was surprising and lovely.
We had read the reviews about the overhead power lines, but for us and where we were sited it was not a problem.
The location near to garstang which was a real delight, even though we live relatively close, we had never visited this area previously, we loved it and will definitely be back. For us it’s a perfect weekend getaway. But I can see it being a fabulous family holiday location.
Toilet and showers were kept beautifully clean and warm.
Great little shop, ice cream available and a small selection of essential items.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The greeting on arrival was lovely and the receptionist was most helpful,
The ground worker / assistant guided us to our pitch and offered assistance.
The pitch was amazing right next to the lake, the club staff was very pleasant.
Upon leaving we realised a flat caravan tyre the office staff immediately came to our assistance and helped to get us back on the road.
We enjoyed our little duck visitors, the toilet and shower block was extremely clean.
We will definitely stay again and we highly recommend this site.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Beautifully kept park, very large pitches with EHU fresh water stand pipe on the camping area, large play area for the kids, plus access to the river were we spent an afternoon kids loved playing and fishing and paddling, toilets /showers lovely and clean, reception staff very friendly, small shop with basic necessities, we didn’t use the bar but everything looked lovely, kids loved the free roaming ducks/ducklings, quiete and peacefull place to stay.

Disliked the walk to the bathroom is a good couple of minutes walk up a slight incline which is fine during the day but not so good during the night for small kids, the water in the showers was very hot and unsuitable for kids but fine for adults.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to review the park, we note your comments regarding the showers, the temperature has now been turned down so hopefully better for the children . We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Local attractions

You’ll find postcard-worthy surroundings all about Claylands. Water fans can meander along the winding banks of the River Wyre (so winding in fact, this is how the river got its name) and take a stroll on the river’s footpaths; Lancaster Canal is also nearby for lazy waterside ambles. The good news is that the river really is right on the doorstep at Claylands, so all you have to decide is which way you want to go. (If you’re really stuck, the staff on site will be more than happy to point you in the right direction, and reception is full of information leaflets and people ready to share their local knowledge.) Or you could just amble about snapping shots of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty... The market town of Garstang, five minutes' drive from Claylands, is an excellent option for this latter, as its whitewashed cottages, uneven streets and country drinkeries may make the imaginative feel like they're in a Jane Austen novel. Further afield, Blackpool is half an hour away, and both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales are reachable in under 40 minutes.
